Now, before we show you this bit of videotape,
you know, this Torrance thing, we really,
all week long, we've sort of been pretending
we have a nice view.
Hal, can you show them what the view actually is
out our window?
All right, here it comes.
All right, we're not getting that great a treatment
from the friendly folks here at NBC.
Look.
Day and night, it's just...
The noise and the fumes, it's unbelievable,
ladies and gentlemen.
Oh, God, listen to that.
You can't get a decent night's sleep.
Fine.
All right.
One little known benefit to ordinary citizens
from...
One little known benefit to ordinary citizens
from NASA's space research program
was their accidental discovery
of the specialty license plate.
Thank you.
These have particularly caught on here
in Southern California,
so let's meet some more of the people
behind those license plates.
Here we are in the foothills
overlooking the majestic San Fernando Valley.
What better place, ladies and gentlemen,
to explore the wonderful world
of those wacky Southern California license plates?
This gentleman is David Swain.
Correct.
Very me.
Very me.
Now, what does that mean, David?
Well, it means when you look at the car
and you see it's kind of fixed up
and a little bit stylish,
or maybe that's the kind of person I am.
It's fixed up, but it's kind of conservative.
And when people pass you on the freeway,
do they look at you strangely?
Most people give me, you know, a good Q sign,
but some people just kind of shake their head.
Now, what is the good Q sign?
They're just like, you know.
And you enjoy having that recognition?
I'm getting a little tired of it.
This woman is Joyce Howard.
You're from Anaheim, did you say, Joyce?
What do you do for a living?
I'm a secretary for a swimming pool company.
All right, Joyce, let's talk about the license plate here.
It's I.B. Foxy.
Now, when people come by you on the freeway,
what is their reaction?
They're kind of amused.
People have asked me if it's not a little bit conceited.
And what do you reply to that?
I say, yeah.
What is Foxy behavior?
Oh, that's a good one.
I just...
Well, I notice you're sitting on the hood ornament,
but I'm not sure that that has anything to do
with Foxy behavior.
It's Funigal, and it's an old Welsh poem.
Funigal, funigal, ober-i-vad, funigal.
Well, actually, it really says funny gal,
but people will come up to me on the street,
and seriously, they will say funigal,
and I say, no, it's funny gal.
And, excuse me, if you move over just a little,
I think the damage here to the left front end of the car
proves that you are also a funny driver.
This is Karen Stanton,
and, Karen, nice of you to be here today.
And Karen's license plate, as you can see,
says, I'll be fams.
No, it doesn't.
It says, I'll be famous.
And what was the motivation
to have this put on your license plate?
Hopefully that people would stop me
and want to know about it.
Maybe give me a part in a play or a movie.
Have you gotten any good job offers
from the license plates?
A couple offers.
I wouldn't say they were good.
And what kind of a person offered you this part?
Pretty sleazy.
And did he wear a lot of really heavy-smelling, cheap cologne?
No, he wore a shirt just like this.
That's Karen's idea of a joke, isn't it, Karen?
That's somebody's idea of a joke.
Marge, you're the fun fox,
according to your license plate.
And what kind of fun things do you do
when you're in the car?
Sometimes go over the speed limit.
Zoom around people.
I shouldn't.
I just enjoy driving it.
So in other words, Marge,
you feel because of the plate
you're actually above the law.
Is that true?
No, no, no.
Marge, you're the fun fox.
Do you know anything about the fun hogs?
No, I don't even think I've heard of them.
Hal, why don't you do me a favor
and introduce the members of your group here?
I'd be glad to.
This is my lovely wife, Sherry.
Sherry, how do you do?
This is my daughter, Erica Lynn.
Erica, nice to see you.
And you're Hal Foster.
You bet.
And the dog?
This is Brandy.
And I guess what we're looking at here, Hal,
obviously this is the group known as?
The fun hogs.
We're hugging all the fun.
Okay, now, what adventure have we caught
the fun hogs in the middle of today?
What are you off to now?
Back to the house.
Catching up on a little work
and possibly maybe going out to dinner tonight.
Let me ask your wife a question.
Is he in the license plate
just embarrassing you to tears?
In the beginning, it did
because we'd be driving down the freeway
and people would honk at us.
Right, Erica?
And we would laugh and hide.
But now we're used to it
because the whole family
we're known as the fun hog family.
And Erica, how do you feel
about being a member of the fun hogs?
I don't care.
This gentleman here, obviously,
enough, is Mr. Hamm.
Mr. Hamm, nice to meet you.
How are you, sir?
Nice to meet you.
And why did you want
to have your name on your car?
Well, I couldn't spell the whole name,
so I abbreviated it.
All right.
And why don't you,
the whole name being?
Hamilton.
Hamilton.
All right.
Mr. Hamm, why don't you introduce us
to your wife over here?
Meet my wife, Joan.
That's Mrs. Hamm.
Mrs. Hamm, nice to meet you.
Hello, Dave.
Nice to know you.
You have your own license plate as well?
Yes.
All right.
I have kind of a surprise for you people.
You know, television
is such a wonderful tool
of communication,
and by communication,
I think what we're really talking about
is the opportunity
to bring people together.
Wouldn't you agree?
I agree.
All right.
So that's what we're going to do here today.
Folks, come on over here.
The Hams,
I want you to meet
the fun hogs.
Here they are.
This is Mrs. Hamm.
This is Hal Foster.
This is Mr. Hamm.
This is his wife.
This is Erica.
This is their dog, Brandy.
Gosh, I have such a warm feeling.
I don't know if you could feel it at home,
but certainly here on location,
surrounded by all of those wonderful people
with their wacky little license plates,
something special happened.
For a moment,
there was no fat guy.
There was no fat boy.
There was no I am hip.
There was no I'm hip.
There was no surf man.
We were all together as one.
What do all of these people have in common?
I'll be honest with you.
They all could get today off.
Thank you.
Good night.
Drive safely.
Okay.
We'll be back with Hugh Hefner right after this.
