You know, a lot of guys in high school have trouble getting even one date to go
with them
to the senior prom, but our next guest had seven dates. And here now, to tell
how that
happened, please welcome Luke Bukhite. Welcome to New York. Welcome to the show.
Thank you.
How do you like New York?
Uh, big.
Have you been here before?
Uh, no, I haven't.
First time, then. It's quite a thrill, isn't it?
Yeah, it's, uh...
I'm sorry the weather's been so lousy.
It's, actually, it's pretty similar to Oregon.
That's right. They get a lot of rain there, too, don't they?
Yeah, it does, yeah.
Have you done anything fun, uh, since you've been in town?
Oh, actually, today I saw the Statue of Liberty.
Cute, isn't it? Very impressive, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know what you should do? Are you in a hotel? You got a nice place?
Yeah, yeah.
Run up a huge bill. Run up a huge...
Go nuts on the room service.
Actually, dinner cost $90 last night.
Really? Wow.
Oh.
You must have had the club sandwich.
Are you... Did you graduate school, Luke?
Yeah, that's the past Friday.
Uh-huh, so you're going to go to college, you've got a summer job lined up,
everything's pretty good for you now?
Yeah.
You know, I found out something after, uh, like, two or three days after the
prom,
uh, you played baseball for your high school team, right?
Right.
Pitched a no-hitter.
Yeah.
Yeah, nice going. Congratulations. My God.
So you're a pretty good athlete.
Yeah.
Do you think you have a shot at playing pro ball?
Uh, no, I don't think so.
Not really? But you enjoy the game nonetheless.
Yeah.
Yeah, where do you want to go to college?
Linfield College.
Linfield in...
It's in McMinnville also.
Oh, right there in your hometown.
Yeah, yeah.
All right, well, good for you. I hope that works out well for you.
Now, let's, uh, talk about this, the, the senior prom a couple of weeks ago,
whenever, uh, everybody's talking about, oh, who are you going to take to the
prom,
what's going to happen, and, and what, what were your plans for the prom
originally?
Uh, my plans were to go to a cabin with, with a group of senior guys, actually.
Really? For the prom?
Yeah. On prom night.
On prom night?
On prom night. Without the girls.
And, and, and how, how exactly is that fun, really?
Just a group of guys hanging out, so.
So, so you weren't going to be a part of the prom festivities whatsoever?
Yeah, you turned your back on the whole thing, right?
Yeah, pretty much.
Yeah, okay. What changed your mind?
I think I had a little family pressure, uh, my mom said I'd regret it for the
rest of my life and stuff like that.
If you missed your prom.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And they, they, too, I'm sure we're nervous about you and the boys up in the
cabin.
Probably, yeah.
Yeah, that's not, I think that's what you want to hear.
Okay, so you decide, well, you're right, you're right, you don't want to regret
something the rest of your life,
you want to, uh, you know, take it as it comes, and then, well, you need a date.
So what do you do? You have a, probably got a girlfriend, good-looking guy like
yourself.
Uh, actually, I don't.
You don't have a girlfriend?
No.
All right.
Um, well, okay, we've got this group of senior guys that, uh, so there's a
shortage already of guys.
Because everybody's going up to the cabin.
Well, yeah.
Yeah, right.
A bunch of guys, uh-huh, yeah.
We're doing guy things.
It's like, like baseball during wartime.
The lineups were depleted because the players were all in Europe fighting.
Right.
Right, okay.
Yeah.
Kind of like that.
Yeah.
And then I kind of changed my mind, and, uh, so there's a group of senior girls
that, uh, were going to go, but without a date.
I see.
So they were just going to go to enjoy the experience of a group of young girls.
Right, right.
Okay, good.
And I guess I kind of butted in, and I asked one, you know, if she'd like to go.
Right.
And there ended up being six more with her, so.
Wow, cool.
He-he-he.
So.
It's a bonus.
Yeah, I'd say.
So I can imagine, uh, I mean, putting myself in your shoes for a second, I can
imagine just being wild with excitement and anticipation.
But also, making a commitment like this to take, uh, the responsibility of
seven women for the, uh, high school prom, that must have filled you with a
little bit of trepidation.
You must have been nervous about some of that, right?
Uh, actually, as the money was, uh.
Money, sure.
More of a concern.
Oh, yeah, because don't, don't kid yourself.
These, these prom things aren't cheap.
You gotta, what are you gonna buy the, you gotta buy a ticket?
They sell you tickets?
Yeah, I got eight tickets.
What does the ticket go for?
Oh, it was about, I think it was $35 a couple.
Oh, my God.
Well, how do they work that out, then?
Because it's more, strictly speaking, it's just one couple, but half the couple
is seven.
Does that make it a couple, or?
Well, buying the ticket, since I was taking eight, I got, I got kind of a
discount, so.
Well, there you go.
You got a deal.
All right.
Pretty good.
Now, what about, uh, flowers?
You gotta get flowers for the young ladies.
Of course, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, and I got, uh, a tux, a limo.
Took them out to dinner.
Right.
Oh, where'd you go for dinner?
You go, you go to dinner before the big dance or after the big dance?
Before the big dance.
Before the big dance, yeah.
And it was called, it was a little Italian restaurant there, kind of in
Portland, called
Bugatti's, I think.
Bugatti's?
Oh, yeah.
Good eats?
What'd you have?
Uh, pasta.
I can't remember.
All right.
And was it, was it going along all right?
Everything, everybody kind of hitting it off?
I mean, you know all of these girls from school and stuff.
Right, right.
We're all friends.
And you were probably thinking, oh, this is fun.
Look at how cute this is and stuff.
And so, you're having a good time.
Yeah, things are going pretty good.
So, you're happy now you're not up in the woods with the boys in the cabin.
Right.
Very happy.
I would think so, yeah.
All right, I think we have some photos here.
Let's take us through this.
It must have been fun, huh?
Oh, yeah.
And you're probably the envy of everybody there at the dance.
All right, this is you right there, Luke.
Look at the size of that car.
So, that's the big limousine.
Yes, sir.
And all of you fit right in there, huh?
Yeah.
Okay.
And afterward, now this is the key.
After the dance and the next day and the next few weeks, is everybody still
good friends?
Yeah.
And you were sort of like the center of attention for the prom.
Yeah, actually, around the community.
I was in the local paper and everything.
I would think so.
So, no, I was pretty popular that week.
Yeah.
You were also like the king of the prom, right?
Right, yeah.
I was crown king.
Here we go.
Take a look at this, ladies and gentlemen.
Here we go.
Luke Bukite and his date for the prom.
All right.
Let's try it.
Who is this?
That's Molly Matichak.
Molly.
All right.
That's Carrie.
Carrie.
Kendra.
Kendra.
Annalisa.
You say Alisa.
Annalisa.
Annalisa.
All right.
Lindsay.
Lindsay.
Katie.
Katie.
And Jesse.
You're a very lucky man.
Now, is there one in that group that maybe you had more special feelings for?
There was, you know, just a little electricity that you got from one or the
other?
No, I think it was more of just a friendly.
Really?
Yeah, just pretty friends.
Pretty good friends.
You can tell me later.
Well, now, would you do this again?
Oh, heck yeah.
Yeah.
Good for you.
Here's, this is a picture of me at my prom.
This goes back to like 1965.
Hey, the Golden Girls.
Okay.
What are you going to do for the summer, Luke?
Do you have plans?
Yeah, I'm planning to play.
I play baseball in the summer, and I got football and stuff like that, so
pretty sports-oriented.
Good for you.
Yeah.
Good.
Thank you very much for coming.
I'm glad you had a nice time at the prom.
Say hello to your folks back in Oregon.
Thank you.
Luke Bukite, ladies and gentlemen.
Bye.
