Our first guest is a very funny man who just wrapped up the final season of his
television
program, Martin. Now he stars in a new film entitled Nothing to Lose. It opens
on July 18th.
Here he is, Martin Lawrence. You know we got to do this here, man. You know we
do that every time
I come on the show, man. Stop it. You're making me dizzy, man. I'm glad to see
you, man. Nice to
see you, buddy. How are things going? Oh, good, man. I'm just very happy to be
here. How many years
was Martin on the air? It was on the air for five years. Five years? That's a
pretty good run,
isn't it? Yes. Yeah. Pretty good run. Thank you. Thank you. What was the, did
you do like a special
cliffhanger final episode kind of thing? Any kind of farewell, goodbye sort of
deal? Uh, no. You know,
I just signed the wall that had the do the right thing post up on there for a
while and I just signed
one love, you know, to America and you know, that was five years of, that's a
legacy to me. That's
something that I got to do. Well, good for you. And you know. What was the
episode when you played
basketball with the, uh, the women from the WNBA? Yeah, I enjoyed that episode.
Um, it got to show me
that the women from the WNBA can really play. I thought it was. You thought
maybe they couldn't
play? Yeah, I thought. No, no. Yeah, I thought, I thought at the commercials in
TV, I thought it was
just hype. They could just, you know, it looked like that. Yeah, that's right.
Low, Low, Low, Low and
Swoop and them came over to my house and we played some ball and, uh, they beat
me. So, uh, I got...
So, so, you know, they didn't just beat me on TV. They beat me for real. You
know, it was all good.
As long as we have fun in the sport, that's all I care about. I'm telling you,
there was, uh, I don't
know if they have this thing on the air anymore, uh, but years and years ago,
Paul, I remember this?
Somebody's making these, uh, shoes, these high-heeled shoes. Mm-hmm. And they
said it, it looked like a dress
pump, but it felt like a sneaker or something. And they had women playing
basketball in these
high-heeled shoes. And I'm telling you something, for like two or three years,
I had dreams about
that. You know what I mean? Yeah, I don't. Oh my God, here comes the shoe
commercial again. And
it was like, wow. Yeah. Uh, so, uh, what else is going on in your life now? Uh,
what's going on in my
life? Oh, you know, the big fight coming up Saturday night. You a big fight fan?
No doubt.
No doubt. Who do you like to win this fight? Uh, they're both great champions.
You know, I'd like
to see, uh, it's hard for me to say, because they're both great champions. Mm-hmm.
I mean, I'd like to
see Mike Tyson get some get back, but, you know, it would make for a good three.
And what does that
mean? You'd like to see him get some get back? What do you mean? What does that
mean? You'd like
to see him get some get back? I mean, you know, I mean, Holyfield took him out
the first one.
Right. Mike come back, get some get back, win that one, then it'd make for a
great three.
I'd like to get me some get back. Yeah. Get me a little get back. You know? It's
really
interesting. I don't know much about, uh, boxing, about prize fighting, but
they say
now, and I think this is probably the case, that, uh, Holyfield, uh, represents
a guy who
is a, a, a gifted tactician and, and a true, a fighter, uh, a true boxer. And,
uh, Mike Tyson
is the classic, just kind of brawler, kind of slugger. And they, they say that,
you know,
normally, uh, the fighter, the tactician will, will defeat the, the slugger and
the boxer.
Well, they both can leave you with brain damage. That's all I know.
Uh, it seems to me like, I don't know if it was a year ago or about six months
ago,
every time you pick up the paper, there was something unusual happening to you.
Yeah.
There was a series of unusual things going on in your life.
Are, are you all right? Is everything all right now?
Yes, America, I'm all right. And I just wanted to thank y'all for supporting me.
I, a lot of that stuff was, a lot of that stuff was just from work exhaustion
and a lot
of overworking myself. That's all. I, I have found, I have found in my...
Yeah, work exhaustion.
In my own meager way, something might happen in your life. If it happened to a
guy in a shoe store,
it wouldn't be unusual. But if it happens to a guy who's on television, well,
then suddenly it's
like a, a bigger deal than it really is, than it really should be. But I have
to ask you about
one thing. They, you were, you were like wandering around somewhere in
California.
Yeah. Directing, uh, traffic or something.
No, that's what the jokes were. The jokes were that I was directing traffic.
I see. I'm a star, man. I was out there with the tour. I didn't have anything
to do. I didn't
have no one to hang with. Yeah. So all of a sudden, my wife, my wife, I was
married at the time. My
wife asked me to go to McDonald's and get her some food. I was going to
McDonald's. I happened to
be walking to the, walking the street. They said, Martin, there you go. Next
thing I know,
I'm in the paper for running and chasing down buses.
But then I read someplace that the explanation was that he was, oh, he was
dehydrated.
That comes from the work exhaustion, man. It all goes together somewhere in
there.
Now, let me ask you this. Like every event, good and bad in a person's life,
you try to learn something, Roman. Have you learned anything from this last
year?
No doubt. No doubt. I learned that, hey, I just want, I'm growing each day to
be a better person.
You know, any trouble that I've got in that I'm not proud of. I'm just looking,
like I said,
to keep doing it right, do the right thing. That's right. And I'm very happy
and thankful
for all my fans and people that truly support me. And I got to say that, you
know, don't believe
the hype all the time. Can't believe everything you read, can't believe
everything you hear. And,
you know, we're all works in progress. And who among us is perfection? Nobody.
Nobody. Absolutely. Only God. The, uh, the, the film looks pretty funny. It's,
it's a pretty good
idea. Very funny. I think it's one of the funniest films of the summer. And it
opens, when is it opening up?
It's opening up, uh, July 18th. Did you like working with him? I love working
with him. He's a,
he's a nice, smart guy. Yes, he is. You know, I hope it's a huge hit for you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you. And, and good luck. And, uh, nice to see you, Martin. Thank you.
Have a great summer.
