You know, folks, when you spend any time living in New York City, one of the
most important but often one of the most overlooked occupations in all of the
city would be that of doormen.
Right.
Doormen, doormen.
They're everywhere. There must be about 40,000 or 50,000 of them in the city,
and to your daily existence, they couldn't be more important, more crucial.
So a couple of weeks ago when the weather was unseasonably nice, it was really,
really wonderful weather a couple of weeks ago, very, very warm.
Yeah.
I said to myself, let's take the camera crew out onto the streets of New York
City, and we'll go to door-to-door of these beautiful apartment buildings here
in Manhattan, and we'll talk to the doormen.
And it's a little something we call door-to-door with doormen.
Roll it, Hal!
I have a feeling that in every apartment building, there's probably at least
one, like, weird guy.
Tell us about the weird guy here in the building. Do you have one?
There's no weird people in the building.
Who's this guy?
You're telling me there's nobody weird in this building?
What do you say when the folks come in?
Well, how are you?
How are you?
Say this for me.
Afternoon, captain.
Afternoon, captain.
Hey, nice to see you, John.
Hey, you know, there's an electrical storm coming, so be very careful.
Is that live?
No.
It's not live?
Is that AC, though?
Yes.
All right, just be careful.
Are you grounded?
Bow!
Look at this.
Me and our director, Hal Gurney, are dressed identically today.
Look at this.
Come on in, Hal.
Take a bow.
How about that?
We have the blue knit shirt and the khaki slacks.
Yes!
Are you the doorman, or are you in the Naval Reserve?
Hi, how are you?
Sorry, I'm not in the lobby, please.
I'm here to see the people in 2B.
He's not expecting us.
I just wanted to drop by and say hello.
Well, he doesn't know you to say hello.
Oh, did I say 2B?
You said 2B or not 2B.
That is the question.
You know, I meant 2D.
You just write 2D.
Listen.
Huh?
Listen.
Now, who are you calling now?
9-1-1.
I've got a cool drink.
We drink the iced tea, and then we just kind of wipe the sweat off our face and
go,
Ah!
All right, ready?
Ah!
One of the tenants in this building just received a delivery of food.
I'm going to check and see how they liked it.
Hi!
Nice to see you.
My telephone is ringing.
Did you just get a hamburger from, uh, Jimmy's and then you...
You want to go in the kitchen and look at it?
Look at that.
That's something.
There's good eating.
Good, Steve.
You take care.
Kurt, I touched your fries.
Hi.
How you doing?
Nice to see you.
Hot enough for you?
Yeah?
I'm Dave.
I'm going on up 8-C.
We're just testing you.
We were just testing you to see what you do.
Okay.
I don't live.
Yeah, that's why I got the radio.
I'll call to the police now.
You're going to call the police now?
Are you the doorman here, Andy?
Yeah.
What kind of car do you drive?
Huey.
Huey's good.
What year is it?
1980.
Right there.
1980?
Classic.
Is that your car right there?
Yeah.
How many miles we got on there?
125,000.
I've got to go, Andy.
Nice talking to you.
200,000 volts.
Ha!
