Our first guest is a favorite of ours from her work on the popular television
program Mad About You.
And now she is also a big-time movie star with the number one film in the
country entitled Twister.
Ladies and gentlemen, here she is, the very lovely Helen Hunt.
Welcome back to the program.
Thank you very much.
Man, I'm going to tell you something. I've got so many things to say to you.
First of all, thank you very much for being here.
Thank you. I'm very excited to be here.
You know how much this means to me that you come to be on the program.
I love being on this show.
I love having you on this program.
Because it's good and you're so good.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I know you need to hear it.
No, no, no, that's not the reason.
The reason is I get to pretend that somehow you and I have a special connection.
I like to feel that we do.
Because it's like to me.
I pretend, too.
Helen Hunt is coming to my house.
That's how I feel.
Helen is coming to visit Dave.
Dave asked me over.
Yes.
That's the game I'm playing.
Yes, and it's a little, so it's fun, isn't it?
And we know nobody will get hurt.
That's right.
There won't be any, you know, none of that.
Right.
Can I say one thing about the whistling?
Sure, go ahead.
Yeah.
You have it as well?
Well, Dr. Marshall is on his way.
Can he help me?
Yeah.
Now, why is it you as well?
Okay, I don't have S's.
I have SH sounds.
For example, the things that swim in the sea are called fish.
There you go.
Now, why do you have that?
I don't know.
I don't know why.
I've had it since I was a little kid.
This is the Ed Sullivan Theater, former host of the Ed Sullivan Show.
Yeah.
But see, if you've had it since you were a kid, you've adjusted to it, and you're,
you
know, you're pretty well.
You're not giving up, though.
You think there's still a chance, right?
No, hang in there.
I've had it for three days, and it's driving me insane.
Don't give up the fight.
All right, forget that.
That's all silliness.
Now, let's get on to, first of all, let's talk about Mad About You, the big
show.
You and your husband on the television program, Paul Reiser.
Reiser.
Something to do with maybe he had a date, maybe you had a date, maybe the
marriage is over.
We just don't know what's the deal.
Is the marriage over, is the marriage not over?
You have to watch on Sunday.
Yeah.
Jamie Buckman kissed another guy, and I walk around the street, and women are
slapping
me on the back.
What's the matter with you?
Really?
Literally, I was in the theater, and I feel this, like, whack.
And I turn around.
What's the problem with you, a beautiful marriage like that?
Okay, first of all, it's like a TV show.
And second of all, it's a TV show.
Really a TV show.
Yeah, but see, see, what I'm thinking is, you know, no, really, is like Paul,
that great
a catch, that they're upset with you for doing something, you know what I'm
saying?
That's what I think, you know?
Yes, he is.
Yes, he is.
Yeah, I wouldn't blame you for a second.
Yes, he is.
All right, so anyway, seriously, what happens Sunday night?
You got to watch.
Yeah, no, no, but seriously.
Because you're going to watch.
I'll be watching, but seriously, what happens Sunday night?
You're going to watch.
Now, I know for a fact that the movie...
Nothing's happened on this show for four years.
We've basically said honey to each other for four years.
I finally have, like, a secret.
I am not going to blow it.
And you kids will get back together.
You don't know that.
No, I know that.
How do you know?
Next season could be a whole other thing.
No, no, no, no, because America wants to see you kids continue in a happy
relationship.
But we'll just have to see you.
So nothing happens.
Just don't smack me like that woman.
No, no, no.
All right, now, now, let's go on to your film career.
Man, is this thing...
It's a little art film I made.
Yeah.
I remember when you were here, like, a year and a half ago, and you said you'd
spent, like,
three months in Oklahoma in a drainage ditch doing a movie.
You didn't get it, really, did you?
And I know, I just thought, well, you know, what is that?
Yeah, you said it's a movie about the weather, as I recall.
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah.
I thought, that's going to send them flying in there.
I think we have you to thank for the success of the box office.
I was wrong.
I'm sorry.
So now it's like this big, huge box office blockbuster.
Yes, I've never been in a movie this big, and any movie that's even medium big
that I've
been in has totally tanked to the box office.
So I keep hearing it made $41 million, and then I go, say to my friend, that's
a lot
of money, right?
Oh, it's a huge amount of money, yeah.
Yeah.
I'd like to see Paul Reiser be in a movie that made that kind of money.
I'd like to see him make that kind of, in a movie.
He will!
No, no, no, are you kidding me?
He has, he has, and he will.
Let me up, let me up.
When you do that, I feel like a dog.
Please let me up.
I'm just teasing, of course.
I know.
So, but it must be really exhilarating.
When you just, everywhere you see it, it's the big twister film.
It's very exciting.
I keep hearing it broke records, but they're records like, it's the biggest
movie in May
in a leap year when your grandma visited on a Thursday.
Like, I don't know.
I can't get a hold of what the record is, but it's something.
That's all right.
We have a clip here of Twister.
Is that right?
Do we have the clip here?
Yes.
All right.
Do you know what we're going to look at?
The idea of setting up a clip from this, I'm not sure, but I think it's one
where there's
a tornado and there's wind blowing.
I'm not sure.
There might be some kind of crap flying in the air, but I don't know.
Them special effects is fantastic.
Here we go.
Helen Hunt.
The movie is Twister.
It's about tornadoes.
That's all you need to know.
Take a look.
Unbelievable.
Non-stop action.
Now, I'm watching this, and I'm thinking to myself, you guys wouldn't be nearly
in that
much danger if you just didn't drive toward the tornadoes.
I know.
Well, it's a living.
Go the other way.
Yeah, well, you'll get the big money if you go the other way.
You've got to go toward it.
Oh, man.
Did you do your own stunts?
Oh, all of them.
No, did you really?
No, absolutely not.
I had an amazing stunt person, and I had a deal with our director, Jan DeMont,
you know,
who did Speed.
Oh, yeah, sure, sure.
Your buddy, Jan.
He's your pal, Jan.
He's Dutch, right?
He's Dutch.
Yeah.
He would explain every stunt to me before each shot, and I would get to decide
whether I
wanted to do it, and he wanted to get me to do it so he could have my face tied
close into the action, so he'd word it very carefully.
He'd say, okay, Helen, you're going to come around the corner in the car.
And right near the car is going to be a huge, medium explosion.
Like a medium explosion?
Is there an extra small explosion I can drive by?
So I had to, I just used my better judgment and jumped in.
But you know the reason that the movie is as successful as it is, because, you
know, strictly
speaking, it really is just about weather, you know, honestly.
Honest to God.
And once you've seen one of the tornadoes, you say, oh, well, there's a tornado.
Because of you.
Thank you so very, very much.
And it's because of, because of you and your...
Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you.
With Paul Reiser in the same movie, it'd be on airplanes now.
Oh, kill it.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
It's some form of freakish torture that I have to find a name for.
That was uncalled for.
I'm sorry.
I apologize to Paul and his entire family.
He was with us in San Francisco.
And he was incredible.
Very, very nice.
He's got a brand new baby.
I know.
That's a beautiful son.
And a terrific looking hairpiece.
That's a joke, too.
That's a joke, too.
He doesn't, he doesn't wear a hairpiece.
That's not my face.
No, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
When you come now to be on the program, I know it's a huge inconvenience.
Because you get a fly, you get a pack all your stuff, and you get a fly all
night,
you get a fly all day, whatever you do.
And you're here, and I appreciate it.
But I know you must do other things while you're here to make it worth your
while.
What kind of things do you do?
I do.
I used to live here.
Yeah?
I love it here.
I go to the theater.
Yeah?
Went to see Rent.
Rent is like the big, big, it's the equivalent of Twister.
It's the Twister.
Wow.
It's a compliment to Twister.
It's incredible.
I've seen it twice.
Yeah.
I've seen it twice, really.
It's that good.
Yeah.
And it's also like the celebrity festival of the universe.
It's the place to be.
When I was there, Jodie Foster was there.
She was Nell, you know.
She was Nell.
Yeah, she was Nell.
That's like some kind of free association.
I said her name, you had Nell like when.
Yeah, that's right.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Pete Townsend was there.
Mel Gibson was there.
He was Braveheart.
He was Braveheart.
I know.
Could I be a little more annoying?
I'm sorry.
No, it's funny.
It's so fancy, this place, that they now have a little celebrity bathroom,
which I probably
shouldn't even be talking about.
But it's just you and me, right?
Yeah.
No one else will know.
Yes, it is.
They have a little celebrity bathroom that they show you so you don't have to
wait in the
line.
And I apparently now rank as some version of a celebrity because I was shown a
celebrity
bathroom.
So I went with my girlfriend, Connie.
We went and...
How is Connie, by the way?
She's good.
You miss her, don't you?
Did she take the weight off?
Yeah, she's pretty good.
Good, good.
Oh, come on.
I'm talking about 10 pounds.
It was 10 pounds, all right?
That's it.
10 pounds.
So, um, so, we go to the little celebrity bathroom.
Yeah.
And I guard the door for her and then she guards the door for me and I come out
and Mel Gibson
is ready to go into the celebrity bathroom.
Oh, man, what a moment, huh?
Oh, man.
Yeah.
Now, there's no lock on the door, so you have to have your buddy, like, stand
watch.
It's the old buddy system.
Right.
The celebrity buddy bathroom system.
Exactly.
So, so Mel Gibson is walking in and I see, like, an opportunity and I say, you
want me
to guard the door?
Sure, sure.
To be honest, I think I had some thought that this would be some vague version
of, like,
hanging out, kind of.
Yeah.
Like, you know what I mean?
We hung out.
I guarded the door, you know what I mean?
Well, Mel has taken a leak.
Sure, I can, you know.
It's hanging out.
I guess it really is.
It sort of is.
It's in a way.
Go away.
Now, hold it.
I'm sorry.
Now, wait a minute.
Exactly.
Everybody, hold the phone.
So, so he goes in there.
I'm now guarding, you know, the door like a bodyguard.
Yeah.
This is a job you don't want to mess up.
Do you know what I mean?
You don't want to be the show that lets somebody walk in with Mel Gibson was
trying to pee.
So, I'm standing there and now all my focus is on this and my friend says, I
want you to
meet some old friends of mine.
All right.
Now, I like split focus.
So, I'm so freaked out about somebody coming in there.
I literally jam one foot against the door and I like lunge and I'm like shaking
hands with
everybody.
And as I'm saying hello, I'm thinking, don't let anybody open the door.
Don't let anybody.
So, I feel the door starts to open.
I'm like, no.
Shaking, shaking, shaking.
And I realize, I hear a little, it's coming from inside.
Oh.
Mel's been in a little longer.
Mel's trying to get out.
And I'm not letting him get out.
But you saved him from certain ignominy.
Probably better that, yeah.
But the play is great, huh?
It's amazing.
Yeah, because, you know, I'm thinking.
And all of the actors are spectacular.
Anthony Rapp is actually in Twister, isn't it?
It's amazing.
Yeah.
And it's about kids trying to raise the rent.
That's what it is, right?
Yeah.
That's what it is.
But it's really, really good.
It's incredible.
Yeah, and it's gotten so much hype.
And it's been like, the advance ticket sales are like four or five years or
something.
It's insane.
It's really incredible.
What else do you do when you're in town now?
You go to see friends?
You go to see plays?
I go to plays.
I see friends.
I went to the zoo today.
Oh, yeah, the zoo is nice.
Where'd you go?
Bears swimming around.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Up in Central Park?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Very nice.
Do you have dinner tonight?
Where do you go for dinner?
Oh, well, I...
Well, yeah.
Let's see.
You won't tell anybody, will you?
No.
Forget about it.
I'm going to go see a play, an unnamed play, and then go to an unnamed
restaurant where
I'm going to have my dinner.
All right.
Sure.
Yeah.
You're in one $42 billion movie.
All of a sudden, we can't follow you around anymore.
It's the biggest movie ever on a Thursday when your aunt was in town and you...
Something.
Is the dentist on the premises?
All right.
Great.
We'll bring the dentist in.
We've got to do a commercial, and then we'll get our teeth checked.
We'll be right back here, kids.
Come on, huh?
Nice.
Look how nice you look.
You look good.
You look nice right there.
The Dave Matthews man is here, and I'm told that the dentist, Dr. Marshall...
Is that you, Dr. Marshall?
Come right in.
Dr. Marshall?
Ladies and gentlemen, Dr. Marshall.
Yes.
Come on in.
All right.
Let me see.
I'm Dave Letterman, Dr. Marshall.
Oh, that's fine.
This is Helen Hunt.
There you go.
Helen, delighted to meet you.
How are you?
Looks like he's related to Sid Caesar, doesn't he?
Sid Caesar doing a sketch as the dentist, ladies and gentlemen.
Well, I remember your show of shows about 50 years ago.
All right.
Just briefly here, I whistle when I talk.
I didn't used to...
How long have you been a dentist, by the way?
Oh, over 25 years.
25 years.
And that's when they gave you the coat.
All right, Dr. Marshall, let me tell you what the deal is.
I went in, I was a bite disorder.
My bite had shifted.
Did you ever hear anything like that?
Yes.
Yeah.
That happens all the time?
If somebody adjusts it and it's not adjusted correctly, it can slip.
Yeah, exactly.
Well, something like that happened.
And then I started digging into the roof of my mouth.
The guy planed off this tooth right here.
In fact, here, I'll show you which tooth it is.
Take a look at the monitor.
Keep your eye on the monitor.
Helen, everybody.
Yeah, put on your safety goggles, doctor.
This thing working?
All right, here.
Just turn, there you go.
There.
That one right there.
Right here.
All right, all right, all right.
All right, all right.
I can't.
There, that one.
Right there.
There, right here.
All right.
There you go.
Oh, did that make you sick?
You babies.
So I'm just kidding.
All I really.
Paul, call 911.
It's the Hold Up Dennis.
I got a million of them.
All right.
Have you seen Twister, by the way?
Yes, I have.
I'll take this off.
It was excellent.
Thank you.
What about the special effects?
Unbelievable, aren't it?
Terrific.
Yeah, yeah.
Absolutely.
$41 million at the box office.
I read that, too, and I thought that was fantastic.
Thanks.
All right.
Okay, you ready for work?
I just don't do anything.
Just all I want is an assessment.
Can this be corrected or can it not be corrected?
Do you understand what I'm saying?
Yes, I do.
Okay, here we go.
Anton.
Yes, it can be corrected.
Yes!
Oh, doctor.
Oh, my God.
The happiest moment of my life.

And it's been like, the advance ticket sales are like four or five years or
something
