Our first guest, talented actor starring in a new film entitled The Voices.
Now listen to this.
You can see it in theaters and video on demand beginning Friday.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Ryan Reynolds.
Thank you. Thank you.
Wow.
There you go. You see what I mean?
Just under the wire.
Yeah.
All right. Good.
Very nice to have you here.
Very, very, very nice to be here.
I'm grateful to be here, Dave.
Thank you for having me.
Happy New Year. I hope it's not too late.
You know, I was watching the movie The Voices the other day, and it's not
apparent, and I had forgotten, what a tall guy you are.
Yeah.
How tall are you?
I'm about Dick Van Dyke. I'm six foot one, six two.
Oh, no, you seem taller than that, but I'll take your word for it.
Okay, yeah.
Six two. But that's pretty good.
Now, there's a certain height at which you can't really be a movie star, right?
I don't know. I know some that are huge movie stars that are under four foot.
You know, with the nine-inch lifts.
Actually, under four feet.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I didn't realize it.
George Clooney?
It's four.
I didn't realize he was a tiny man.
About 3'11", you know?
Yeah.
He has a 6'1'' face, though.
I was thinking in terms of the other way.
Like, if you get to be 6'6", you're not going to be a movie star.
It's pretty tough, but there are some guys.
Really?
Vince Vaughn, tall guy.
Oh, he is tall.
Tim Robbins, tall guy.
Tim Robbins, tall guy.
Yeah.
But not 6'6", or like 6'7".
Maybe 6'7".
6'7", you're pushing it there.
You got into the CGI stuff.
Yeah.
That's what you got to get into.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Then your head's up in the lights.
Yeah, exactly.
It doesn't work for anybody, no?
No, no, no.
Then you have to call Osha.
Jimmy Stewart?
Now, Jimmy Stewart was a tall man.
6'4", 6'5".
Have you seen many of Jimmy Stewart's films?
I have a lot, yeah.
Yeah, he's fantastic, isn't he?
He's just one of those guys, and I think you're in that category, where irrespective
of the movie,
the film, the story, the character, you just like watching the guy.
And a decent guy on and off, you know?
I believe he was a decent guy.
You feel that, too, with him, yeah.
And you, decent guy?
No, no, no, no, no.
Terrible, terrible human being.
Terrible human being.
Oh, God, yeah.
Well, it takes, you know, I mean, once you...
I get into it.
Yeah.
But now you have, how many children do you have?
One.
Just have the one.
It better just be one.
Yeah.
Boy or girl?
It's a little girl.
Little girl, congratulations.
Thank you very much.
How old is the little girl?
Oh, God.
Thank you.
She's about six weeks now, yeah.
That's you and your wife, I guess, right?
Yeah, just us, yeah.
There was no third party involved.
But now you never know.
Although, hey, you know.
Sure, yeah.
And the baby's name, have you decided on a name?
You got a name.
We're trying to, yeah, I always feel like I never know how to play that,
because, you know, I'm in the public eye,
and then I don't know whether to just thrust this child into the public eye.
Well, no, you don't want to do that.
People said that the name was Violet, it was reported,
which is a very pretty name.
That's a beautiful name.
Congratulations.
But that's Ben Affleck's daughter's name.
Well, it's not your daughter's.
Your daughter's name is not Violet.
We would never steal another celebrity baby's name,
so we went with Shiloh.
Shiloh.
Shiloh.
Shiloh.
No, it didn't.
Although, you know, that kid was born a little jaundice,
like a little carrot, and I wanted to go with John Boehner,
but that was shot down instantly.
You know, wait a minute.
You're making jokes about your baby daughter?
Yeah.
You're six weeks old or something?
She's fair game, Dave.
Yeah.
She's fair game.
Yeah.
I've been up every 45 minutes every single night.
She's fair game.
Let me tell you something.
I know people who don't have the name loaded up and ready to go.
Yeah.
And then, oh, so what's the name?
Well, we really haven't picked.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
And it goes on.
If it goes on more than 24 hours, to me, that's bad parenting.
Yeah.
Now, so you're saying you have a name.
Oh, no, no, no.
We definitely do have a name.
I mean, I threw out the idea of just never naming the kid
to be totally original, but, no, we have a name.
I just never, I don't, yeah, I just, I don't.
You don't want to tell people.
I don't want to say it in, like, a media context.
I tell everyone who I meet.
So it'll come out.
I just, I just don't, I just don't feel, you know.
You don't want to say anything to hear is what you're saying.
I guess, yeah, yeah, I guess.
Copernicus is her name.
Is it a, is it a, like a family name, like your wife's name?
It is a family name, yeah.
It is a family name, yeah.
So, like your wife's mother's name or something?
I see where you're going with this.
No, no, it's not, it's not Elaine.
No.
Elaine is a beautiful name.
It's a beautiful name, though, isn't it?
Yeah, it rolls off the tongue, single syllable.
Yeah, very nice.
Olivia, is it Olivia?
No, it's not Olivia, no.
That's nice, though.
It's also a beautiful name.
Emma?
Uh, it is now.
It just became Emma, right, right now.
Eva.
No, Eva, also very, very nice.
Now, does the baby have a first and middle name?
Uh, yes.
Should I be guessing both names or just one?
Should I be working, let me work on the middle name.
I should have worn my cup.
I didn't know I was going to get this busted this, uh, this hard.
Wait a minute.
You mean you're out here and you're not wearing a cup?
No, yeah.
Um, here's a beautiful name, Sophia.
Gorgeous name, Sophia Loren.
Love that.
Done.
Consider it done.
Is that your daughter's name?
No, it's not at all.
No, not even close.
Is this getting on your nerves?
No, not at all.
I can go all day.
Is your wife at home?
It's your nickel, sir.
Is your wife at home cringing?
Oh, please don't make him tell us.
Please don't make him.
Yeah, I'm this close, by the way, so keep going.
Isabella.
Isabella.
Isabella.
Isabella.
Abigail.
Not at all, no.
A good Canadian name would be nice.
Gordon.
Gordon?
You know.
Guy.
Guy.
Guy Lafleur.
Here's one you don't hear often.
Nozzle.
No, you don't.
You don't, you don't hear that.
Yeah, middle name cavity.
Yeah, you don't.
Yeah, go with that one.
Sorry.
It was cheap.
It was.
I don't know.
I'm just gonna, you tell me if it's on that list, and then.
No, it's not.
Not on that list?
Not on that list at all.
It's a very popular baby girl name.
Yeah, Madison is incredibly popular.
Not on the list.
People love that one.
No, no, not one.
Is it a biblical name?
Ruth.
Oh, yeah, maybe kind of.
Ruth or Mary.
Sarah.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, absolutely not.
Okay.
Well, let's talk about something else.
Oh, please, for God's sake.
Will you.
I'm gonna give you the old Dave Letterman here.
Will you, uh, will you tell the child its name at some point?
I'm thinking of letting, letting her know.
I think it's important.
I'll slap a little hello my name is on her and she'll send her to school.
And delighted to have a little baby in the house?
It's amazing.
It's amazing.
I mean, I'm not one for, you know, vomiting declarations of sentiment out
across the airwaves.
But when we had that baby, I fell more in love with my wife than I'd ever been
in my entire life.
That's the way it works.
I couldn't even believe it.
That's exactly the way it works.
It brings, you know, and I just, I, I, I, I used to say to her, I would take a
bullet for you.
I would, I would, I could never love anything as much as I love you.
I would say that to my wife.
And then the second I looked in that baby's eyes, I knew in that exact moment
that if we
were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that
baby.
You can quote me.
I mean, it's almost Valentine's Day and I've, I've never heard Love Express
quite like that.
I've written that because like for the, the guy, I'm just like a diaper
changing facility
hooked up to a, you know, a life support system.
But my wife, that's, that's, you know, she's breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
She's a, a human Denny's all day long and all night long.
And it never, it never, uh, flattery just doesn't stop, does it?
Romantic, right?
Oh my God.
She's the most beautiful Denny's you've ever seen.
I guarantee you.
Well, congratulations and I think this is all, uh, just great and I envy you
having been
through the experience myself.
I envy those, those early years are just absolutely, and now, uh, my son is 11
and, uh, you know,
it's still okay.
He's a, uh, I'm going to introduce you to, it's a different, it's a different,
uh, different
kind of love at 11, baby Copernicus, uh, all right, well, let's do this, Ryan.
Let's take a look at a clip from the voices, uh, how do you describe this movie?
Because I'm sitting there thinking, oh, I know what this movie is.
And then it just goes nuts.
Yeah.
It's a very, very, uh, crazy film.
It's a, it's a, it's about a guy named Jerry Hickfang, who is the possibly the
kindest,
nicest serial killer you'll ever meet.
Uh, Hickfang, Hickfang is his last name, works at a bathtub factory and, uh, he's
a little
mentally unstable, and he, uh, he hears voices, he hears voices everywhere.
He hears voices everywhere, and his, is seemingly his two best friends are his
pets, is what
it seems like.
Whose aren't.
But yes, absolutely.
Absolutely.
Okay, what are we going to see here, Ryan?
Uh, you're going to see, uh, a sea between, uh, Jerry, uh, his dog, uh, Bosco
and his cat,
uh, Mr. Whispers.
Okay.
Here we go.
It's the voices.
It's not what you're going to think from this clip.
No.
Not what you want to hear from your cat.
No.
Absolutely not.
You can see the entire film, the voices, in theaters and video on demand, uh,
beginning
this, uh, Friday.
Here he is, the new father, ladies and gentlemen.
Congratulations.
Thank you, David.
Good luck with the baby.
Thank you.
Whose name is...
Linda.
Oh, very good.
Now, Bonnie's very nice.
Put your eyes back in the top ten list, everybody.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye.
