Our next guest stars in the blockbuster new film entitled X-Men X-Men United.
It's the number one film in the United States.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Hugh Jackman.
Your hair is longer than I thought it was going to be.
Why is it that long?
No, I'm not going to say that.
It's long for a movie I'm about to do.
What is the film?
As I was preparing, it's called Van Helsing.
And as I was preparing in my dressing room, it started dropping out, which is
not a good look.
Oh my God.
This is what happens with extensions.
It's the truth.
So that's my little gift to you.
That's not actually your hair.
It's somebody else's hair in your head.
It is, yeah.
It's kind of frightening in the middle of the night.
Yeah.
You know, I'll wake up and I'm like, ah, get out of here.
But that's for you.
Oh, thank you very much.
You look a little frightened.
Well, I'll put it with the spit.
In fact, I looked at that little segment and I thought, I can see X-Men 3 right
there.
Yeah, yeah, sure.
By the way, congratulations on the number one movie in the country.
That must be pretty exciting, huh?
It's very exciting, yeah.
Thanks to the fans for supporting it because...
What was the first film you made and how was that, like, compare that
experience to X-Men?
I did a couple of films in Australia and it's very different.
I mean, you have to fight to get a chair on set, you know, and most days they
say, oi, you, get over here.
You know, you're about to film.
Sorry, did I say that?
Yeah, it's a term of affection down there, but here it's sort of, you know, for
the first three weeks it was Mr. Jackman, Mr. Jackman, and I said, please just
call me Hugh, and my trailer was like the size of my apartment back in
Melbourne, and every day I'd go to this set and I felt like I was at a Rolling
Stones concert, except I was the one in front of the camera.
So, I mean, it's a huge difference.
And then, of course, you realize everyone's just the same and we had a ball.
Good.
And what town are you from in Australia?
I'm originally from Sydney.
Oh, Sydney, beautiful town, huh?
It's a beautiful town, yeah.
And did you know when you were a kid that you wanted to be an actor?
You know, I always acted, I always did it, and I certainly didn't know I wanted
to do it professionally.
In fact, to this day, I've done a couple of musicals, and my friends refuse to
come and pay to see me, you know.
Yeah.
Very supportive, they are.
But, you know, it's one of those things that eventually you get the confidence
to do.
I think I was about 23 before I really took it seriously.
In fact, one of the big breaks I had was when I was working at a part-time job.
And this woman came in, and I signed her up at the gym.
I was working at a gym.
All right.
And she happened to be the wife of Dean Semler, who won the Academy Award for Dances
with Wolves, cinematography.
And she said, she was just talking to me, and she said,
I'm a white witch, and you're going to be a big, big, fat movie star.
Really?
Yeah.
And I was like, yeah, okay, if you just finish your form there, man.
Anyway, she said, no, no, no, please.
I want you to meet this woman tomorrow.
Her name is Penny Williams, and that woman is still my agent to this day.
And the day after that, I went for an audition and landed this part.
So this white witch kind of set me on the road.
Well, that's quite a story.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thanks, Annie.
Thank you, Annie.
And you're now moving to New York City to do the musical here?
Yep.
I'm doing a musical about the life of Peter Allen called The Boy From Oz.
Now, how is that going to go with the folks who are going to see the X-Men
movie and see The Boy From Oz?
Well, if people are expecting slicing and dicing on stage, they're going to be
surprised.
They're going to get a lot of maracas and Hawaiian shirts and high kicks.
It's very different.
Peter was a cabaret performer, very flamboyant.
He was married to Liza Minnelli and a huge figure here in the 70s and 80s.
And it's all his music, and I'm very excited about it.
But it's, please, don't expect slicing and dicing.
When does it open?
That opens October 16th.
Okay.
Now, I know everybody has seen the movie by now, but let's take a look at a
clip here from, it's X-Men, X2, X-Men United.
Is that what it is?
Yeah.
Okay.
It's something, some football team.
And what is your character?
I play Wolverine, a.k.a. Logan, who is, he's got claws coming out of his hand.
He can heal himself, and he's got a skeleton made of this metal called adamantium,
which makes him this indestructible fighting force.
Okay.
Do you know what we're going to see here in the clip?
I don't.
All right.
Well, let's find out.
Take a look.
X2, X-Men United now playing, folks.
How about that?
Wow.
That's something.
The, uh, by the way, the helicopter at the end was just there to blow my head.
Now, when your son sees stuff like that, has he seen the movie?
Can he go see the movie?
No, he doesn't see the movie, but he, he got dressed up as Wolverine at
Halloween, uh, at Halloween, and he was mini Wolverine.
He loves it.
He's got a, he's got a little one foot size doll of Wolverine that he takes to
bed, and he calls it Dada.
Uh-huh.
So, I think there's like 20 years of therapy due for him, but if you press the
belly button on this particular doll, it's voice activated, actually with my
voice.
Uh-huh.
And so, in the middle of the night, occasionally, I, I hear this, this kick
will take you down.
You know.
My boy, sleeping tenderly.
Oh, blessing.
That's pretty cute.
Yeah.
Now, uh, I'm told that you have a, uh, stupid human trick of your own.
Is that true?
It's not too bad.
I, I, I can't really compete with what's been here before.
Well, thank God.
Yeah.
It, it is, uh, actually something I do with my eyes.
I have no idea how I do it.
So, I actually probably need the camera.
All right.
Very, I mean, really close.
Really close.
Are we close enough?
Probably even closer.
Even closer.
Okay.
Ready?
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
How about that?
Of course.
I've never seen it.
So, I'm going to look forward to, uh, watching this tonight.
Does that give you a headache if you do that for prolonged periods of time?
It does.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
Uh, well, welcome to.
I'll watch that tonight with my wife.
Welcome to New York.
Who sends her best to you, by the way?
Oh, tell her I said hello.
It's a salient point.
Never mention when you're first dating someone that, who you have crushes on.
You know, you have those little chats when you're first with someone.
Oh, I, you know, I like this person.
And, well, she admitted her crush on you.
Oh, my God.
Um.
Bring her around, for heaven's sake.
At the moment, things are going just fine.
But, you know, I'll, I'll let you know.
Yeah, well, welcome to New York.
And have a good run with the show, and thank you for being here.
Congratulations on the movie.
Hugh Jackman, everybody.
Thank you.
