Thanks, Paul. My next guest sang for 12 years with one of the most successful
groups of all time, Led Zeppelin.
He is now the leader of a great band called The Honey Drippers and is working
as a solo performer as well.
This is his latest album right here. It's entitled Shaken and Stirred.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Robert Clance.
Hello, Robert. Nice to see you, sir. Thank you for being here.
What did we see there in the video? That's obviously on the album, right?
Yeah.
Who are those people?
That's the band.
That was the band. Is there a story there? Obviously a wedding in progress or
something?
Yeah, but it's my kind of disregard to marital circumstances more than...
Yeah. You're not crazy about...
Well, I'm not crazy. Not too crazy, no. I had to go through it and come out the
other side, so to speak.
Let's talk about The Honey Drippers. Now, who all is in that group?
Because there's nobody listed on the album.
Oh, in the next group, that's him over there, that gentleman.
Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck.
And you mentioned Paul. Paul worked on the album as well, right?
Paul was on the album, yeah. And Niall Rogers. You know Niall Rogers?
No, I don't know Niall Rogers.
All right. So now, where were we? Did I just get here?
No, I just walked in. You were here before, weren't you?
Yeah. Oh, okay. Now, tell me about the name.
The Honey Drippers, it goes back a long way. This is a lemon.
Right.
When you squeeze a lemon, and you mix it with honey, you get a very nice drink.
Right.
And I guess honey is something very sweet, tasty on the lips. And everybody
likes the Honey Dripper.
True or bluff?
I'll say that it's a bluff.
Well, not apparently. Not apparently.
No, is that what you had in mind for the name?
The Honey Drippers is a name that's been used over the years, in the 40s.
Now, I've heard of another name, Honey Dippers, which is a whole different deal.
Right?
But this is something completely different, I'm guessing.
Well, it could be the same.
All right. We have some photographs of you here.
Where'd you find them?
Well, let's see where these are.
This is from the fan library number 12, Robert Plant. You have your own
magazine here.
Oh, absolutely.
All right.
But who's that?
Now, that's some hair you had there. That's...
Oh, it went on from there as well.
Yeah. What year was this? What are we looking at there?
That's 1966.
Yeah.
You were at college then, weren't you?
I was.
As a matter of fact, I was...
No, I...
Yeah, I just started college from high school.
Was it Balls College?
Ball State University.
Balls.
Balls College.
Balls College.
Balls College.
True or bluff?
No, this is...
All right.
Now, you know, whenever we have people who are legendary rock and roll
performers,
sometimes we talk about things that they did on the road.
And it's kind of silly because it's a stupid thing to ask at this point.
But I know from what we found out this afternoon that you guys really were
trouble on the road.
What, you mean me and Mr. Schaefer?
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
In the early days.
Talking about the early days.
Oh, I don't think I was, was I?
No.
Did you have to put up a $10,000 deposit to get into one hotel here in New York?
Well, that wasn't really my fault.
No.
But down in the Oyster Bar at the Plaza Hotel.
Yeah.
Oh, we also lost some money in a hotel here, too.
Had some money, you left without some money?
How did that happen?
Somebody brought into the safety deposit box and took some of them.
But what were you doing that, what kind of a reputation preceded you into the
plaza?
I have no idea.
We had a lot of people who, sort of peripheral folk, who used to be in a state
of dazed confusion
and reflected glory and that sort of thing.
And they used to get a little wild at times.
It was always after my bedtime, then.
And would you do physical damage, structural damage to the buildings?
Not me personally, but I didn't know it was done occasionally.
Was this TVs out the window and into the pool, that kind of thing?
No, that was Rod Stewart.
Oh.
Where is he now?
Well, we just saw him on TV the other night with Paul and Will, as a matter of
fact.
Did he?
Yeah.
Let me just say, if I made...
Has he still got the leopard skin jumpsuit?
Last I looked, yeah.
Let me just say, though, this about you, Robert.
When I was about to work with you, I would say about five, six, seven women,
30-ish, 35-ish age women, around my age,
said to me, you were working with Robert Plant, would you give him a message
for me?
See, I was on the 1971 Zeppelin tour, and I don't know that he'd remember me.
But, you know, so there was, you know, five or six of them.
I have the notes, too.
And how did you get on?
Well, we got along very nicely.
And you're going to go out on tour again with the honey drippers?
Well, the honey drippers will be incorporated in the tour that I'm just about
to start.
Yeah, where are you going?
All over North America?
Are there any place you won't go in this country?
Probably where Cheryl came from.
Yeah, Huron, South Dakota.
Not because I don't want to.
Yeah.
I just don't know the way there.
Yeah, okay.
Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, and good luck with the album, and good luck
with the tour.
Now, is Paul going with you on the tour?
He can't possibly make it.
Not this time, but I don't know.
Is he busy here?
He is busy.
Yeah, maybe next time you might call me.
I don't know.
All right.
Robert, nice to see you.
Thank you, Bob.
We'll be right back, folks.
