i am very excited about our first guest this woman listen to this 15 emmy award
nominations as a lead
or supporting comedy actress the most in television history wow the most in
television history now
all that's fine in addition to that she stars on a very very funny show
entitled veep you can see
it on hbo ladies and gentlemen here she is the lovely julia louis dreifuss
thank you thank you dave
thank you thank you well let me just um you look wonderful by the way thank you
dave vladerman
i appreciate it now here's what you need to help me out with because uh i watch
your program on my
ipad so i don't know how i am chronologically with the series i'll tell you the
last show i saw okay
you tell me where i am right the last one i saw was you had not done well in
new hampshire uh-huh
okay where am i in the series season finale that was the season finale of see
of season three i'm
fairly certain yes now when does season four begin well we we begin shooting it
in september oh so i
haven't missed anything you haven't missed a thing thank god but did something
else spoiler alert if you
haven't seen the show did something else very big happen in that final episode
of do you i mean in other
words is she still the turn down your television if you haven't seen the whole
show vice president
mm-hmm no no no no no no no no no no no yeah he's a big fan no no i i i no i i'm
sorry no no no
she's now can i say it or not well yeah i'm just saying spoiler alert mute your
your uh thing well
oh they did that an hour ago
when i walked out
no the here's what i know
here's here's what happened potus yeah because of illness in the family his
wife yes mentally
unstable yes has decided to abdicate that's correct you are then elevated to
the position of president of
the united states yes but you have to run for re-election now i have to one and
i i have to one
you have to one and you have to two but you're in new hampshire
i'm in new hampshire and i come in third in new hampshire you come in third so
once again things ain't exactly going your way no they're not well anyway what
i'm trying to say
here is i just love the show thanks it's tremendous and and you fantastic and
the cast what a delightful
cast yes you've had a bunch of them on too thank you yeah and the and the
writing on the show is is
really stellar it's very dense we feel very lucky to be working yeah it's it's
the kind of thing where
it actually makes you laugh and you don't get that much on on television so
nice going on that
well i'm right about that you you know there's just a handful of shows that
really make you laugh
well i suppose so or or at least you right yeah yeah right uh and then what was
the deal with your
hair now that i uh the hair yeah yeah well it was actually my idea uh uh that
uh selena would sort of
have this notion that she needed to rebrand herself and so she gets a a haircut
and uh and you know it's
also it sort of stems from how female politicians never get a break if they
make a slight change
to their appearance a new look with a jacket a lapel whatever it is they get a
lot of flack for it
and so we thought we'd cut off my hair and so we did and it looks horrendous
and um was it actually
cut off or was this effect achieved with a hairpiece the effect was achieved
with a wig
not even a piece an actual wig and um so it's very very bad and i painted
myself into the corner with
this thing but whatever i look kind of like uh uh i do i look like dustin hoffman
in rain man
i do and i think i you know dustin hoffman is a very uh handsome guy you know
but um but that's my
point exactly yeah yeah uh reaction to the change well um the reaction has been
what we would expect
which is you know i look grotesque and so uh and we i had this one experience
that was very unfortunate
when we were shooting one of the final episodes and i had this haircut and i
was looking particularly
awful because i was wearing a green fatigue jacket and jeans and big boots you
know i was campaigning
trying to become one of the people or something you know and um and it was in
between takes and i
really had to use the restroom so i excused myself from the set and i went
running to the ladies room
we were shooting in a in a kind of a deserted mall in the middle of maryland
somewhere and i went
running in and so there was somebody else also in the restroom you know their
stalls and so i went to
the stall next to where this person was and i and i closed the door and i
noticed oh wow that lady has
huge feet my god and so um so i uh i take you know i start to um go pee and and
and i sort of uh
look and then i kind of go like this and wait a minute where'd she go and then
i went
and this man was peering down at me over the thing and i screwed yes i know but
just listen and so i
scream i go what are you doing and i go you know pulling up my clothes and
running out and i sort of
screaming like what are you doing what are you doing and i said this what are
you doing in the ladies
restroom and he goes dude what are you doing the ladies restroom yeah it was
bad and never a good
thing there's no way that can be a good thing no there's no scenario that you
can somehow interpret
that or anyway so it was bad it was not good i didn't feel good about myself
you know uh we're
talking about seinfeld it started 20 started started 25 years ago can you
believe that no i can't
believe that everybody's talking thank you but honestly i cannot believe it was
25 years ago it's like
what the hell in 10 minutes we're all gonna be dead well that's it in the blink
of an eye and uh we were
yakking about our our kids and i have trouble with the fact that my son is now
10. i asked about the
ages of the ages of your kids and this was even bigger 17 and 22. wow nice
going yeah and how are
they they're wonderful they they couldn't be better did you did you go through
an angry teen period um
you know i didn't really i mean touch wood we're still we still have a teenager
so it could blow up
in our faces it could get bad any second i suppose but no they're pretty amenable
people and nice
company and i i rather enjoy the children and and well good and do they do they
love the idea that mom
is is famous and known everywhere you know that's a good question i've never
asked them that question
and that will be the subject of our dinner table conversation i i asked this
question of a an adult
whose parents are very well known yes and i said wow it must be really cool
that your parent is so-and-so and
the kid said to me it sucks oh that's great okay well i'm just saying it could
go either way it could
go either way yeah i mean because from where i was sitting it looked like this
would be fantastic
right right well um let's let's dwell on the negative then i i yeah i suppose
four time emmy award
winner yeah for for how many different shows how many different shows did you
work for three that's
crazy yeah the the new adventures of old christine that that kind of is uh you
had seinfeld uh then
you had the new adventures of old christine yes one for that yeah and now you've
won two for a veep you've
been nominated 15 times uh lucille ball uh was only lucille ball we're talking
about nominated 13
times oh wow well that doesn't seem right that seems very strange it uh it kind
of does uh yeah it
does all right oh you know what oh and maybe this has been yacked about to
death what the cover of
rolling stone oh yeah oh man uh did this is in april take a look at this photo
right here look at this
yeah well let me tell you something about that cover that was um uh there's a
story behind this uh that
came out of it because there's a story behind this yeah um there's uh i got
this um they had to stencil
this on my back you know it took a really long time it wasn't photoshopped or
anything and that means
somebody is actually inking over a stencil of the constitution is that the preamble
of the constitution yes sir
yes and so and then and then you know we got the john hancock and so on and and
it took about an hour
45 minutes to get it done and so
and so um and so and then i took a i took a picture with my my iphone and uh i
i sent it to my husband
during the shoot right and so we're about halfway through the day and i push
send and it goes and
about three seconds later my phone rings and it's my husband brad saying hey
hey hey flag in the
play john hancock didn't sign the constitution let me let's see it again this
is fantastic yeah i love this
oh my how about that how about those he signed he he signed he signed the deck
but listen so john who cares what he signed
no but listen so i said okay well there's nothing we can do now he signed this
constitution so forget it
and so so uh so i think well we'll just see if it you know probably nobody will
notice nobody will
notice right and so uh anyway it becomes a bit of once it comes out a pretty
big internet sensation
right and sort of takes off and people are like oh it's a decoration of
independence everyone's freaking
out so we sort of made hay of it and and that was fun that it was all screwed
up and then
an old friend of mine from college rush pearson he emailed and he said you know
what you should do you
should put out a baby picture of yourself uh with a john hancock thing like a
signature tattoo as if
you'd always had it and it wasn't a mistake and so yeah that's a good idea so
that's what this is then
and so great and so i took that that photo and i posted it to the you know the
twitter and the
facebook and all of that business and the next thing you know guess what i try
to get on back onto my
facebook bam bam bam no no no no insensitive insensitive material inappropriate
blah blah blah blah
blah and i'm like what what and i keep trying to get in change my password
absolutely not they think
i'm some sort of a pervert posting baby pictures naked baby it's me it's you i
can't get into my accounts
anyway this show uh you can't tell us what is going to happen i don't even want
to know what's going to
happen i just want to know when i'll be able to see it so you go back into
production and then
i'll be able to see it yeah you can come and visit the set i'd like i'd like to
be a part of that
but the the cast is so aren't they amazing it was interesting to me uh the big
dopey guy that
came from the west wing uh dopey guy that came from the west oh oh i thought
you meant west wing the
show no no not the show he used to work yeah tim he plays jonah and it's tim
simons and he was on
your show i know and what a sweet guy i mean he just seems to be just a snarky
butt i know but in
life he's incredibly intelligent and kind and thoughtful human being it's a
terrific he's acting
it's a terrific show and uh uh you're a remarkable industry a one woman
industry ladies and gentlemen
it's a great pleasure to see you thank you thank you for coming i appreciate it
i love
