Our next guest was one of the swingers in the highly acclaimed independent film
entitled
Swingers. He now stars in the Lost World Jurassic Park, which in just one week
at the box office
has earned $6 billion. Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Vince Vaughn.
Yes, siri. How you doing? I'm pretty good. How are you, Vince? I'm good, Dave.
Congratulations. Is this
like a big deal? Is this what actors are hoping for to get somewhere in their
career, one of these
mega monster blockbuster films? I think so. You know, it's nice to be included
in it. I grew up
watching Stephen's films, you know, so it's kind of like being a part of a
comic strip or something
like that. So it's been a lot of fun. Is a lot of this, when you're acting,
they keep talking about
how you don't really see the monsters and the flying monkeys and stuff and you
just have to
kind of pretend they're there? It's true. You kind of click your heels together.
There's no,
you know, sometimes you see the dinosaurs, there's robots in that, but other
times you don't.
You know, I'm not the first one from my family here on your show. Somebody
mentioned that to me
this afternoon. It's true. It's true. You have a relative who was... My cousin
Jimmy,
my cousin Jimmy from Pennsylvania. Jimmy Vaughn. Jimmy Vaughn was on. He did a
stupid pet trick.
How long ago was this? About a year and a half ago. Is that right? He was here
with his dog,
Bruce. Oh, I remember Bruce. Do you remember Bruce? I don't remember Jimmy. I
remember Bruce.
That's how it is for most people. That's how it is for most people. But he's
got a lot of time on
his hands, my cousin Jimmy. Spits the ice cream and the dog catches it. Oh, is
that right?
I think it's true. And this was about a year and a half ago. A year and a half
ago. What does Jimmy do?
Jimmy works with his father. He's kind of a mama's boy, Jimmy, if you want to
get... No,
he's not a mama's boy. He's not a mama's boy. He's bigger than me. He's here
tonight. He's a
fabulous, fabulous young man. Man, bigger than you, and you're a large man
yourself. I'm kind
of thin. I'm tall. He's got more of the size. All right, here. You mentioned it.
We have it on
videotape. This is, I believe, it should be the same one you're talking about.
Very cool.
This is your... You say it's your cousin? My cousin. My first cousin.
Cousin Jimmy, Vaughn, and Bruce. Take a look. That's cool. Wow. That was ice
cream? That
was ice cream. A lot of time on his hands. What did you think of the hot pants,
Dave? You
did the hot pants? Everything worked for me. It looked great. All right. Wow.
Yeah. So do you... A lot of fun at the family reunion.
We have a good time. Do you spit anything at animals? Not the animals. No. No.
When did you start your career in acting? I moved out from Chicago, where I'm
from originally, Chicago, when I was 18 years old. And I got a big job for
Chicago, smaller market, but I got a national Chevrolet commercial. So for a
kid, that is like a big deal, isn't it? Yeah. You know, coming from totally
removed from the entertainment industry and, you know, getting a chance to do a
national commercial for Chevy was a big deal. And so I went out there and I
thought, they're going to be happy to see me.
They'd be waiting at the border. They'd be waiting at the border for me.
Because the heartbeat of America, the song moves. You love it. Everyone loves
the heartbeat of America. So I was excited. What did you do in the commercial?
I think my brother wouldn't let me drive the car. And then I really want to
drive the car and he throws me keys. I get to drive the car. Yay, Vinny. So on
this experience, you decided to pack up everything and go to California.
I said, hey, I made. What do I need? You know, like Goodfellas when you get the
call. Had truck sales jumped because of this commercial?
There was a little bit of a rise, yes.
Well, I don't want to brag, you know. It's like I'm kind of a good luck charm.
You have the Lost World, you know, and then the Chevy.
Everything goes through the roof. The price is going up. Your ratings tonight
probably a little bit more than usual.
I had a connection, you know what I mean? Like on the inside tip. And I called
a large talent agency out there and I really genuinely believed that I was
going to be able to shop around a little bit and have my pick of people.
Yeah. Not so much when I got there. But anyway, I called them and I say, yes, I
know so-and-so, their agent gets on the phone.
I say, I've just done a national Chevy commercial and I'm interested in meeting
with you guys discussing representation.
And they said, you know, Vince, she knew my name at least, but she said, Vince,
we only handle movie stars.
We don't take undeveloped talent. So I was judged and labeled a little bit and
felt hurt, but I kept going.
And she said, she said, but I can refer you to a small agency. I said, I'm not
completely sure I'm signing with you, ma'am.
I'm shopping around. I got a national Chevy commercial.
I know not to buy the first apartment. I might be from Illinois. Hayseed. I
know what's going on.
Did you try to put her in a truck? Maybe move something that way?
Maybe I would have gotten representation then.
We have the Chevy commercial. Do you know the year of this?
Uh, 1988, I guess.
Here we go. Take a look, ladies and gentlemen.
Dave, I want your honest opinion. That's cute.
Not cute. Am I nuts to think I'm going to have my pick of the litter?
Well, if you had mentioned that, you know, throw, throw your cousin and the dog
in the deal.
Yeah.
And you got a package.
It's true. It's true.
Tell me about swingers. What was your relationship with the gentleman who was...
Jon Favreau, who was here.
Jon Favreau.
He's like a nice guy.
Yeah, he's a nice guy, Favreau, and a funny guy.
We were friends. We met on the film Rudy, which was set in Indiana, where you're
from, Notre Dame.
And my part was kind of ended up looking like me in that Chevy commercial,
unfortunately.
And Jon's part was in the film.
I don't know if you guys remember him. He played D-Bob in the movie.
Rudy, maybe not. They don't remember him.
Yeah, okay.
But anyway, so he comes...
So he moves to Los Angeles and broke up with a girlfriend and kind of based on
our life experience.
So it was autobiographical, wasn't it?
It was exaggerated for the funnies.
And you provided tips to make women more interested in you.
We're going to go down that road. We're going to go down that road.
Yes, I guess I did, unconsciously, because I didn't really realize to what
extent until he wrote the screenplay.
Yeah.
And kind of how he saw me.
Run down a couple of tips.
I don't really have any big tips.
I'm into conversation and just kind of meeting someone.
Ladies, is that bad?
Just to talk and feelings and sharing and I don't know.
Maybe that's bad.
Maybe that's bad.
I'm like on Jerry Springer now.
But wasn't there some kind of strategy with leaving messages on answering
machines?
Messages and stuff.
I used to tell him if you call a girl and you leave a message on the machine
floor, always be distracted and have a guy over at your house with kind of a
cool name like Zane or something like that.
And then when you're leaving the message, you know, make it like do him a favor,
but kind of be tough about it.
So you'd be like, hi, yeah, this is Vince.
And hold on a second.
Zane.
What?
Yeah, go on.
Take the car.
But just fill it up with some gas or something.
You bring it back.
That's cool.
That's cool.
Anyway, it's about.
Fill it up with some gas or something.
Yeah.
Or something.
Maybe get it clean.
Just fill it up.
Just something good.
Something good for the car.
With something.
Right.
Doesn't have to be combustible necessarily.
That's true.
Zane, just fill it up.
That's true.
But to me, leaving a message like that would raise more important questions in
the mind of the girl.
Such as?
Well, what's the deal with Zane?
The film continues to do big, big business.
Yes.
More to do with the big lizards than with me, but the film is doing very well.
Well, congratulations.
Thank you very much.
I'm happy to hear things are going so well for you.
Oh, I appreciate it.
Nice to see you.
Thanks for having me.
Nice to see you.
Vince Vaughn.
Ladies and gentlemen.
Thanks for having me.
