last month in beijing our next guest won three gold medals for jamaica
and set three new world records please welcome the world's fastest man usain
bolt everybody
how you doing i'm doing well congratulations boy that's exciting to see and you
know when
i was watching the olympics it looked to me like you when you finish these now
these are the shorter
distance races but still in all looks like you weren't even breathing hard is
that right
i was just happy then yeah really i was happy i i was breathing all right but
didn't show didn't
know it did not show at all and and of course what everybody talked about and
commented on was
before the finish line that you're dancing and whirling around and flapping
your arms in celebration
now now that's not technique that's something different from running technique
isn't it i was
clapping my arm i was actually trying to fly but trying to work have you ever
actually been
airborne no they caught me a couple of times airborne but yeah a lot but i was
just happy then i was i
know i'd won so right i was just really happy then but but then again everybody
else is fine we all know
he's happy it's a great moment for himself great moment for his country but if
maybe you uh finished
the race and then celebrated maybe your maybe your world records would have
even been lower yeah that's
true but uh then it would take me a long one to get there again so i've been a
smart one i slow down
well anyway congratulations now uh i know i noticed that you're a tall man and
uh i didn't know
that sprinters are sprinters is that advantageous to be that i'm actually uh
the first the tallest
sprinter how tall are you i'm six five six five and and i guess the idea is
well you've probably got
very long legs and that's that's some benefit right yeah i have a lot of
complaints from the shoulder
athletes they've been complaining a lot that i feel of a disadvantage against
us i was like it wasn't my
fault you didn't exactly just tell them to get back on the bus leave you alone
i've been telling them
uh and here's the question that uh that and i'm not a fast guy um
is an athlete uh first of all was was running your first choice your first
event did you want to do
that first yeah i wanted to play cricket play cricket yeah and cricket is is
similar uh to baseball you
have a bat and you knock balls and you have fielders and you pitch your bowl
and whatever what what
position did you like to play i was a fastball actually i i'm i bad a little
bit not yeah yeah
do you still play some cricket yeah my brother plays cricket so i still do yeah
and and at one
point somebody said you know what cricket may not be the way to go how about
this is that what happened
yeah my my cricket coach saw me running a couple times i'm like you got speed
yeah it's trash i can
feel and then i just start blowing everybody away so right stay with it it's
probably more money
in track and field than cricket right probably yeah but here's the question is
is a guy like you or you
or anybody are you are you born fast or can you teach yourself how to become
fast actually uh from
from i popped out i was running fast pretty much yeah i was quick small my mom
got to take me to the
doctor i was so full of energy running all around climbing stuff so i was quick
from when i was young
right so so when a guy like you with this incredible speed when you train what
do you work on is it form
do you have to concentrate on yeah well personally yeah because i'm tall i keep
rocking you keep rocking
yeah because the breeze up up this height is kind of hard so i see i got to
work on keep my farm well
so yeah you had to do some time in the wind tunnel yeah yeah get it aerodynamically
where you need it
to be yeah maybe some special hat or something uh but that uh but but it's it's
just remarkable to me
so so do you train much yeah yeah i train train a lot six times a week six
times a week and what does
that consist of how do you how do you train to build speed well uh well
actually i go to the gym like for
one hour each day then i got a tour what do you do at the gym weights yes i'm
um well i'm not i don't
look very big but i do go to the gym right yeah i do like bench presses and
stuff like the upper body
yeah yeah squats squats yeah you enjoy the squats not really yeah
uh and they uh they were telling me that before uh the race the 100 or the 200
uh maybe the finals of
those events you're eating chicken mcnuggets now that's not true is it yes it
is actually i i made
i make sure i prepared i had some before i came here i prepared well coming
here actually but it's
difficult to stand after you eat those things let alone uh i mean is now is
that typical of a diet
for you before competition no not typical because i was just making sure i had
the right food because
there was so you're in china so you don't want to eat anything you don't know
so i make sure i had
nuggets i know nuggets yeah just being safe who the hell knows what's in a
chicken mcnugget for god's
sake um but now let's let's uh show we saw the 100 meters let's take a look at
the 200.
this is a a race now now is your is it possible that your time could be faster
in the 200 than in
the 100 or is that impossible it's possible it's definitely possible i think so
look at the lead
i was coming on but i was thinking to myself right here i better not crater
right here so yeah
these medals are just beautiful congratulations thank you very much thank you
very much
so the relay what's the distance of the relay oh it's 100 meters also pretty
much yeah and then the
200 meters and the 100 so congratulations and when you went back to jamaica
finally it must have been
crazy oh i can't explain it it was it was awesome i really enjoyed it and the
people they were standing
in the rain i was like are these people real yeah do they know the rain is
coming down it was pouring
and they were standing there but it was fun i really enjoyed how old are you 22.
oh 22. so in terms
of a sprinter you you got maybe two more olympics in you yeah probably yeah i'm
thinking about it and
world championships and competing all around europe and everywhere yeah yeah
yeah so you having a good
time yes it's been great yeah well congratulations it was very thrilling to see
nice to meet you
world's fastest man ladies and gentlemen we'll be right back with morning wood
everybody
