You know what we're doing tonight, ladies and gentlemen. I'm terribly excited
about this.
Turn on the camera out there on 53rd Street, ladies and gentlemen, and let's go
crazy.
This lovely woman, Sharon Day, Costa Mesa, California,
and you were part of the United States Olympic track and field team,
recently competing in Beijing, China. Congratulations.
Thank you very much.
Welcome home.
Thank you.
Sharon, where do you go to school?
I just graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Uh-huh. Congratulations on that.
Thank you.
And you competed in Beijing doing what event in track and field?
The high jump.
The high jump. How long have you been high jumping?
Since 7th grade.
Now, you probably know that I feel that high jumping is the purest athletic
accomplishment in all of track and field.
I would have to agree with that.
Yeah, because other than a bar, you don't need any equipment.
You don't need poles.
You don't need, like, a rocket booster.
You don't need anything.
It's just your strength and your ability to leap over that bar.
And what's your personal best leap there, Sharon?
1.95 meters, which is 6'4 and 3 quarters.
Holy cow.
So that's 2 and 3 quarters inches taller than I am.
And what was your best effort in Beijing?
1.85 meters, which is about 6'1.
Wow.
What is the height you're going to attempt, Sharon?
5 feet, 10 inches.
5 feet, 10 inches.
Here we go, ladies and gentlemen.
From Costa Mesa, California, Sharon Day.
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Yeah! Whoa!
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful, Sharon. Thank you very much. Just gorgeous.
Now, I noticed
when you're preparing, and there's a certain measure of mental preparation that
goes into
this, you were leaning way, way back. Now, is that mental or is that physical
preparation
when you lean way back like that? It's just a little bit of both, I guess. Just
something
I've done since I've been jumping. Yeah. Well, it's amazing to watch. It's
absolutely
poetry in motion. And if I had been leaning that far back, I would have
collapsed and died.
They'd have found me in a hovel on the street, in a -- wherever they find me.
Hovel. All right. Let's take a look here. Now,
here's Sharon Day going over 5'10". This is remarkable. Beautiful. Beautiful.
Yeah!
Thank you very much, Sharon. Thank you. Now, do you hope to continue your high-jumping
career?
Oh, yeah. Definitely. I'm going to keep jumping for as long as possible. I'm
sorry. Were you
trying to get a cab just now? I was out of here. Because I think you were out
of here. I think -- you're
back at the hotel room counting your per diem. Well, good luck to you, Sharon.
Thank you very
much. Sharon Day, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you, Abby. Hi, Mom.
You're great. Isn't that beautiful? Wasn't that absolutely gorgeous? You're
right. Poetry in motion.
Now, we have two other jumpers to come, and we'll do that when we come back
from commercial.
Ladies and gentlemen, do me a favor and say hello to Dusty Jonas from La Vernia,
Texas. Hi,
Dusty. How are you? Doing all right. Where'd you go to college, Dusty? What's
that? Where'd you go to college?
I still go to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Cornhuskers. Absolutely.
Now, didn't they almost get beaten by Ball State last year? I believe so. Yeah.
Ouch!
Yeah. How long have you been high-jumping? Since I was about nine. Nine. It's
exciting, isn't it?
Yeah. As much as it can be, I suppose. What did you jump in Beijing, Dusty?
Seven, two and a half. Seven, two and a half. Oh, my God. It's just remarkable.
Seven feet. That's a foot taller than I am. A foot taller than I am.
And what height are you going to attempt for us tonight?
I'm going to attempt seven, four. Seven, four. Wow.
Seven, four. So that would be better than your Olympic best.
Yeah, I pretty much need to make up for that. Okay.
Yeah. If you make that, I will give you a shiny new quarter.
I'm excited. Yeah. Anytime you're ready, Dusty. Take it away. Here we go.
All right. From Lavernia, Texas, goes to the University of Nebraska. Go, Huskers.
Here we go.
Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Yeah. Yeah. How about that?
Wow. That was it. How about that?
That was it. How about that? Way to go. Thanks.
Hey, Biff, do me a favor. Here's the quarter. Take it right out there.
As quick as you can. Give that to Dusty. Thank you.
Let's take a look now.
This was a beautiful jump. Here it is in slow motion instant replay.
Oh, my gosh. Look at this. Whoa. Beautiful.
Congratulations. Nice job, Dusty. Here comes Biff with your quarter.
Oh, I'm excited. I'm going to frame this.
All right. Dusty Jonas, ladies and gentlemen.
Have a good year there at Nebraska, Dusty. Thanks again.
Thank you. How about that? Was that a thrill?
That was a beautiful jump. Oh, man. That was gorgeous.
Let's go back out now to 53rd Street. This gentleman is Andre Manson.
Hi, Andre. How are you? I'm doing good. How are you?
Where are you from originally, sir? Brenham, Texas.
Where are you going to college? I just graduated from the University of Texas.
All right. Hook 'em horns. Am I right? Yes, sir. Hook 'em.
What are you going to do professionally now, Andre?
I'm still going to compete in the high jump and just have fun with this.
All right, sir. What were you able to jump in Beijing?
I jumped seven, four and a half. And what is your personal best?
Seven, seven and three quarters. Woo! Nellie.
And tonight, what will you be jumping?
Seven, five. Seven, five. All right.
So that will be, I think, the highest of the three heights we've seen so far
this evening.
Is that correct? Yes, sir. Yeah, that's right.
All right. Now, Andre, if you can do this successfully, I have for you a shiny
new quarter.
Oh. And a copy of the Late Show book, Fun Fact.
Okay.
So I know you're saying to yourself, "Oh, my God. Somebody pinch me. Is it
Christmas morning?"
Did you enjoy your experience in China?
Oh, yes, sir. It was a great experience. One I'll never forget.
Was that the first time you were over there?
Yes, sir. Mm-hmm. Make a lot of friends?
No, not really.
All right.
Any time you're ready, Andre. Be careful. Godspeed. And good luck. Here we go.
All right.
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.
Come on.
Yeah! Yeah!
How about that?
Wow.
That was it.
How about that?
How about that?
That was it.
That was it.
Way to go. Andre Manson, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you.
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Yeah! Yeah! How about
that? Wow! How about that? That was it. Way to go. Andre Manson, ladies and
gentlemen. Thank you. From the University of Texas Longhorn.
We'll be right back.
