our next guest how about this we go from one guy to another guy my god our next
guest uh led the
u.s olympic basketball redeemed team to victory in beijing bringing the gold
medal back to the
united states for the first time since 2000 here's your olympic gold medal
champion lebron james
thank you very much for being here and i know because we ran a little long with
the senator
you're very gracious no no problem thank you that's very good we've established
this before
you and i are essentially the same guy right right right uh i mean just the
physicality alone i mean
we're just like uh you know peas in a pod really uh congratulations on the olympic
gold medal nice job
now this was um this was your second time on the olympic team is that correct
correct yeah how old
were you the first time you played on that team uh wow so long ago huh 19 19 19
years old what was the
difference uh this year where the team was able to prevail and the first year
you were part of the
i think the main difference was we um finally understood what it meant to
represent our country
you know to be an olympian and it's a privilege it's an honor and i don't think
the first team
understood that in 2004 why wouldn't they understand that i don't know and that's
why we that's why we
came home what we came home with is is it is it a matter of coaching is it a
matter of collective
mentality that's from somewhere else it's ingredients of everything coaching
and maturity right um you
know players maturing and and then understanding ultimately you know this is
the united states of
america now we represent here this is this is the greatest country in the world
let's let's take care
of business yeah well you certainly did what um and and you the the coach of
this team was uh mike
sheshevsky from duke coach k uh what was that like you guys have a rapport um
it was great for me going
straight to the um from high school to the nba it got me it gave me an
opportunity to be around a college
coach um be around and be able to pick the brain of a college coach i think no
matter what level that
you look at coach k is probably one of the greatest coaches that we have right
wow well he certainly
got the job done with you guys and and uh the experience of being in china had
you been to china
before yeah that was uh my third third time going to china great it's great and
and to be around
athletes from all over the world to be around chinese athletes fun thrilling
exhilarating must have been
all of those it was it was everything and above everything i've expected and
and more to be able
to be around other athletes and and see why they are here at the olympics it
was great did you get to
see uh michael phelps and i did i did i was i was there um the day that he won
and broke the record for
his eighth gold medal so it was like unbelievable yeah those swimmers are
amazing because in addition to
devoting your life to swimming you also spend quite a lot of time doing this
and that really i mean i'm dizzy now just from a couple of shots
tell me about the the season uh the the nicks still not in the league so uh
tell me
what what does that mean for cleveland what do you guys now you came close uh celtics
have prevailed
last year what what are your goals i know what your goals are you want to win
the whole thing yeah i
feel i'm at a point in my career now where every year i continue to get better
and um you know if i
don't if i don't come away from a season you know not winning the whole thing
it's a disappointment
for me that's just how that's the kind of standard i have well and tell me
about your team i know in
the beginning there was a sense that you had to carry the whole team that maybe
you had to work a
little too hard too harder than it was humanly possible how is it now what kind
of balance are
we looking at we just made a trade this past off season and acquiring mo williams
for the milwaukee
bucks was which is a very good pick up for us um average 17 and a half points
seven and a half assists
a game a very explosive point guard that can create his own shot and create for
others so that's
automatically going to make us better and guys just continuing to get better in
the off season
um daniel booby gibson is another guy that's that's young that's continue to
get better
um and we have some some pretty good guys around us that's going to be very
good we're going we're
looking forward to the season what do you think of the senator um he can play
for us too i heard it
well again always a pleasure i hope you come back when i'm in cleveland i i can
call you
lebron james ladies and gentlemen thanks for watching good night everybody
