Yeah, sure.
Thank you very much for being here.
Well, thanks for having me on.
This is quite exciting for us, and the folks indicated that.
How long have you known Willie Nelson?
That's a hard question.
Last week, Willie and Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings and I were over in
Switzerland,
and we're talking about just that.
I was trying to figure out how long I'd known Willie,
and we couldn't even remember when we met each other.
And I figured it's because I sort of idolized him when I was in the Army.
He was one of the hero songwriters.
And then when I went to Nashville, after I got out of the Army,
I sort of made friends with a lot of guys who had been fired by Willie and ex-musicians.
And he kind of worked his way into my consciousness,
and I don't remember when I didn't know him.
Yeah, yeah.
He's been on a show here.
Willie was on about six months ago.
What were you folks doing in Switzerland?
We were doing a Christmas show for Johnny Cash.
And I can tell by the question on your face, you know,
it sounds like a question that one of the press over there asked the bunch of
us,
Montreux, Switzerland, John.
And Waylon said, because that's where Jesus was born.
Johnny.
Johnny, let's go.
Yeah.
I don't think people realize that, but it's...
He sat there.
He looked just like a kid who said, you didn't know?
I knew that one, did you?
Now, this is the voice I wish I had.
You know?
No, you, right here.
Right here.
Tell me about Song Raider.
This movie has been made for...
It has been made, right?
It's out now?
Well, that's kind of a question, too.
It's, uh...
It has been made, and it's a real good film.
And, uh...
And it's being put out in the strangest fashion of any film I've ever seen.
It's, uh...
It's kind of a well-kept secret.
Like, we...
We don't even have a film clip to show you.
Yeah?
On the, uh...
I thought we did.
But it's a terrific film.
It's, uh...
And the only reason I'm bragging on it is because absolutely nobody else in the
world
is going to say anything about it.
The, uh...
The company is going to let it go right down the toilet.
No.
It's, uh...
It's been, uh...
Well, it was produced by, uh...
Sidney Pollack.
Mm-hmm.
And, uh...
It was a real good script by Bud Schrake.
And he's one of these Texas crazy writer friends of Willie's.
And, uh...
Got a great cast in it.
With Rip Torn and Leslie Ann Warren and Belinda Dillon.
And what is the story here?
Well, it's kind of a surreal, uh...
Uh...
Version of Willie's life.
Which is surreal to begin with, you know.
And, uh...
A good-hearted movie.
Just about a bunch of bandits trying to...
To, uh...
Out-maneuver one another.
Mm-hmm.
In the, uh...
World of the music business.
Which is not unlike real life.
Yeah.
You know.
Often like real life.
So, now you're saying that the movie has been released in certain parts of the
country and will hopefully eventually...
Strange parts of the country.
Well...
Like where?
Where...
The places aren't strange, but it's kind of a strange place to put out your hit
movie.
Like Selma.
Selma, Alabama.
Evergreen, Colorado, you know.
It's a...
It's a sneaky way.
I mean, they may have something going on there that, uh...
I don't know about.
Mm-hmm.
They call it, uh...
Officially, plateauing.
Plateauing.
Which I suspect is the latest Hollywood euphemism for, uh...
Close encounter of a personal con.
If you hear about somebody possibly plateauing you, I would keep my back to the
wall.
It's, uh...
It's, uh...
Yeah.
Uh...
Well, uh...
But it's a good movie.
You know what?
You would like the movie.
It's as...
It's as twisted as, uh...
Let me rephrase that.
Sure.
You know, uh...
You know, I thought earlier when I was coming on here, you and Willie have a...
Have a similarly sort of oblique way of looking at life.
Really?
Sort of askew.
Yeah.
And, uh...
That's what...
That's what Alan Rudolph, uh...
Director in this movie, was able to pull out of it.
Now, when you guys, uh...
Traveled together, and we talked about a, um...
You're touring, uh...
Again, together.
Yeah.
Uh...
Is...
Is it as crazy as people might think it is?
Or was it ever crazy?
Or is it less crazy now?
I think it was crazier before, but it's still crazy.
It's still crazy.
Yeah.
It's, uh...
Well, we were on stage in Nashville, uh...
About two weeks ago.
A whole bunch of people at Waylon Jennings got together for this benefit.
And we're all standing on stage in this filmed, televised, uh...
Final song with George Jones and Farron Young and Merle Kilgore.
And Roger Miller was out in front of us singing this song he wrote called Old
Friends.
And we were all humming like dogs in the background, you know?
And suddenly Pootie, uh...
Willie's roadie...
Well, this was Roger's arrangement.
And Pootie, uh...
Looked up and said,
Speaking of old friends...
Pow!
And he hit Hank Cochran right across the chops.
And Willie stood there.
What tickled me was Willie's reaction to the whole thing.
This is...
This is...
This is being filmed, right?
Yeah.
Willie said it was like watching your mother-in-law going over the cliff in
your Cadillac.
He said,
I thought,
Right on!
Oh, no!
That is good.
Uh...
We, uh...
We're going to do a commercial,
but when we come back,
we'll talk to Chris about other things.
Maybe a couple of old Bible stories that you didn't know.
We'll be right back.
Chris, let me, uh...
This is...
Oh, they're terrific.
They are terrific.
This is a, uh...
I guess, a press information deal.
A star is born,
vaulted Chris to Hollywood stardom,
and won him the Golden Globe Award for, uh...
From the Foreign Press' Best Actor,
and a major event in your lifetime.
What was it like working with, uh...
Barbara Streisand?
Uh...
Boy, I ought to know the answer to that one.
I've probably been asked that more than anybody else.
Uh...
It was challenging.
It was, uh...
It was real hard,
and it was real rewarding.
Yeah.
It was like, uh...
Did you know her before the film began?
Yeah, I did.
I had known her, uh...
Some years before that.
We had actually, uh...
kind of dated or whatever.
Is that right?
Back, uh...
Now, I didn't realize that.
When did that take place?
Back, uh...
Back in...
And when I first started performing back in 1970.
Yeah.
Uh, she...
Now, now, this boggles the mind.
I...
I hate to interrupt here,
but what the hell
do you do with Barbara Streisand on a date?
What...
What...
What...
Just explain that one.
What...
Where does that begin?
Where does it end?
Good Lord.
What, uh...
I...
I...
I, uh...
I kind of just went around
wherever she took me.
And, uh...
But we got along real well.
She was a good date.
Well, yeah.
I mean, date.
Well, I haven't been on a date
since high school.
Yeah.
But, uh...
But we hung out together
and, uh...
And, uh...
Enjoyed each other's company.
Yeah.
And, uh...
Uh...
When we worked on a film,
we fought a lot
because we were both protecting
areas of integrity, I think,
that we were worried about.
And, uh...
But it was for the right reasons.
It was to make a better, uh...
Better film.
And when we finished up,
we finished up with a lot of...
A lot of, uh...
Mutual respect and affection.
Yeah.
And, uh...
Uh...
I have a lot of gratitude for it
because...
Because it was, uh...
Definitely, uh...
A step up to a different level of...
Of, uh...
See, now, I thought it was gonna be
like a horror story.
But, obviously, you said
despite the fact that you were fighting,
it turned out to be a good relationship.
Oh, uh...
Yeah.
I just did a video with her.
For what?
Uh...
For a song that she's got out.
Some crazy record.
I don't know anything about it.
It's, uh...
And...
What was the video like?
Well, it was confusing.
Intentionally so.
Yeah.
Uh...
The director told me that, uh...
Jonathan Kaplan said that
they make these just the opposite
of the way they make movies.
Because the kids have to watch them
all day long.
And they don't want to understand it.
They want to figure it out.
So...
Oh, so if a kid figured it out
the first time,
wouldn't be interested in watching it
the rest of the day.
I suppose.
Yeah.
I have seen a few of those things
on there,
and I figured them out
the first time.
Oh, wow.
Ah, so now, uh...
The video turned out all right,
and I think we can look for that.
Yeah.
Well, it's out.
I saw it the other day,
and I get...
It, uh...
I'd like to work there again.
Oh, that's good.
That's good.
It'll be a lot of fun.
Let me ask you,
I came across something
we were talking about you
this afternoon,
and, uh...
I guess this was when
you were going to school
in Oxford,
or maybe afterward,
you were traveling around Europe,
and you were...
became, uh...
a bullfight, uh...
fan.
Oh, I, uh...
I used to follow the, uh...
bullfights around Spain
back when I was a student
over there in Oxford.
And you were in the, uh...
participating in the
Running of the Bulls
at Pamplona?
Yeah.
Now, is that...
That's dangerous and strange, isn't it?
Oh, yeah.
Well, they killed somebody
the year that I was there.
In fact, they regularly, uh...
people are killed by it.
It was, uh...
But it was a time in my life
when, when, uh...
I was immortal, you know?
I didn't believe that...
Just a kid, sure.
...that it was possible
to kill me.
Yeah.
And, uh...
And I was trying to be
as much like Hemingway
as I could.
Uh-huh.
And, uh...
Doing all the same wrong things
that he was doing.
Other than blowing my brains out.
Yeah.
And, uh...
But it was...
It was a thrilling time.
Is that...
Is that...
That's obviously the time
that you, uh...
found yourself face-to-face
with Ernest Hemingway?
Well, yeah.
It wasn't in Pamplona.
I saw him, uh...
Uh...
I think it was in a place
called, uh...
Burgos
of Northern Spain.
And he was following, uh...
his friend,
Luis Miguel Dominguin,
the guy that used to go out
with Abba Gardner and all that.
And, uh...
Dominguin and Ordonez
were having a mano-a-mano.
And Dominguin was wounded gravely.
And, uh...
We were waiting around
to, uh...
to see how he was.
And suddenly there was...
Uh...
Hemingway standing right
next to me down there.
And I was staring at his...
His face was ravaged
at the time.
It was shortly
before his death.
And I...
And I was just, uh...
I guess shocked
by...
Yeah.
By how far, uh...
Down he'd gone.
And I don't know
whether he saw that
in my face or what,
but he looked at me
and he just wheeled around
and jumped in a car
and drove off.
Yeah.
And, uh...
It was the strangest
meeting and confrontation
I've ever had.
Did you even get a chance
to speak with him?
Uh...
Not hardly.
Yeah.
Uh...
Not hardly.
All right.
Let me see here.
That's a great story.
Oh, it is.
It's a terrific story.
Um...
But you will be touring
with Willie Nelson.
Uh...
Is that in process?
In progress?
Yeah, well, I...
I mean, I'm going down
to Savannah tomorrow.
Pick a...
Uh...
Hook up with my band
and we'll join them
at the 1st of December.
Yeah.
And go through the south.
Carefully avoiding
any place that the movie
might be coming out.
It's supposed to open. They're sneaking it out in Los Angeles.
It's plateauing. So if you're in Los Angeles, it's being plateaued there right
now. Go see it or you'll never get a chance to.
Los Angeles, of course, is the home of plateauing.
And Chris, nice to meet you. Please come back, sir. Thank you for being here.
We've got to pause here for Jason Identification. We'll be right back.
