I'm ripping good.
How you doing?
I'm great.
You know, every time I see you, I'm reminded of the striking contrast between
how you actually
look in real life and the way you looked in Pulp Fiction and various other
motion picture
roles.
You had like a wig going in Pulp Fiction.
It was a wig, right?
There it is.
Yeah, it was a great wig.
Great wig.
Yeah, yeah.
It's happening wig.
I had a couple of those.
I mean, you got it.
I have a box full of them at home.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, they had to wake mine up occasionally, you know, the one that had the
brains and the
blood.
You leave it overnight and it gets kind of like a candy apple.
It gets really hard.
So you have to take a spray gun, spray it real hard in the morning.
It's kind of rick it up and then you throw it on my head.
Yeah.
We always made sure to keep that one bit of brain right.
Oh, my.
People are trying to eat their cookies, please.
Oh, I'm sorry.
You know, I've talked about this motion picture.
I found it, and I feel silly talking about it because I've talked about it so
much.
I found it endlessly entertaining.
And, of course, it's violent, obviously.
You can't get around the fact that people are applauding the violence.
But it's almost sort of like violence in the sense of like an amusement park
thrill or
scare.
You know, you just, you, it's kind of cartoonish.
But it's so much fun to watch.
Was there any way that it was fun to make?
I mean, does it work that way as well?
Every day it was fun.
I mean, we had such a great time.
The first day John met the kid we had to shoot in the back seat, he looked at
him, and he
felt so sorry for him.
He looked at his face and was like, oh, look at his little face.
I can't kill him.
John, shoot him.
Shoot him now.
Shoot him in the face.
But it's really funny, though, because in the actual script, he shot him in the
throat
first.
And he was in the back seat, kind of, going like this.
And John's going, well, I got to kill him now.
I'm going, oh, now you want to kill him.
And so finally he shoots him in the head and the brain flies.
All right.
All right.
Yeah, totally great.
Totally great stuff.
But you know, in the movie, you're clearly, between you and John, with you and
John, you're
the brains of the operation.
You're the guy.
You're thoughtful.
You're introspective.
I'm a professional.
Yes.
And you're examining your life.
Yeah.
John is just playing a dumb guy.
Isn't that pretty much it?
Well, he just kind of goes with the flow.
Yeah.
And he gets lost at times, and you have to bring him back.
Yeah.
So that was my job, to make sure he stayed focused.
You know what's a great piece of work, and to me, it made me tired watching it
because
I'm thinking, good Lord, the work that went into this, is the speech and series
of speeches
that you do at the end of the movie, when you're in the coffee shop and all
hell is broken
loose.
That's an amazing job.
Well, thank you.
Thank you.
I did a lot of.
You know what the funniest thing about Europe is?
Oh, what?
Well, it's the little differences.
You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Paris?
They don't call it a quarter pounder with cheese?
No, no.
They got the metric system there.
They wouldn't know what a quarter pounder is.
Well, what do they call it?
Yeah.
Royale with cheese.
Royale with cheese.
What do they call a Big Mac?
Well, a Big Mac is a Big Mac, but they call it Le Big Mac.
Le Big Mac.
What do they call a Whopper?
I don't know.
I didn't go into Burger King.
Thank you very much.
Oh, man.
Oh.
Now, you know, now from now on, every time I'm sitting in the middle of a scene
and I'm getting
ready to work, I'm going to have to say to myself, what would Dave do?
Oh, bless you.
Bless you.
And, you know, you could do a lot worse, sir.
You know, that's just one of the many memorable great little exchanges in the
film.
We have to pause here for a commercial.
We'll come back and chat more with Samuel L. Jackson, kid.
Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Linda Ronstadt will be out here.
Jennifer Jason Leigh is terrific, isn't she?
Yes, she is.
Just absolutely wonderful.
Nice one.
I don't know her well.
I met her once on the show, but I like her really well.
There's something very mysterious about her and a great, great actress.
You had a parade, in your honor?
Yeah, I was at Disney World at the Bryant Gumbel Golf Classic playing in a
tournament.
The Bryant Gumbel Golf Classic.
Now, we've had a lot of people on the show talking about being in the event.
It's apparently a very nice fundraising annual thing that he does.
Yeah, it's for the United Negro College Fund.
It was a wonderful golf tournament.
And while I was there, they have a model or a replica of the Grauman's Chinese
Theater.
Oh.
And I went over to put my hands in cement.
That's nice.
And they brought out the band and put me in a convertible, on the back of the
convertible
with Goofy.
He must have been terribly honored.
Oh, yeah, I was happy.
I was totally pleased.
So, Willard was there.
We're driving down the street.
We're driving down the street and all these people are in the park and they're
looking
and they're going, oh, wow, look, a celebrity coming by.
And all the kids are going, oh, Goofy, Goofy, oh, God, Goofy.
They're loving Goofy.
So, you know, looking at their parents going, well, who's that guy?
And I said, oh, shut up.
That's Goofy's bodyguard.
Goofy's got him a bodyguard.
That's right.
Well, you know, Jules rules all over the planet, so.
Do you have, have you thought about if you win, an acceptance speech?
Have you thought about that moment?
Do you care about that?
Or is it true, just the nomination is plenty?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Yeah, right.
No, I mean, I'm getting dressed up to win.
I'm going there to collect something, you know?
And I figured that now that you're the host and we know each other, there's a
way that
you could kind of be up there, you could read any name you want.
That's right.
Actually.
Any name you want to say.
You know, they sent me all the paperwork and I can save everybody some time.
Here, there you go.
Just take that.
Oh, good.
I just need you to sign that.
Oh, my God.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
All right.
I don't know what to say.
And they're shorting things down about 15 minutes right there.
This is wonderful.
Actually, I thought more about what my reaction is going to be.
That's very important because they've got that camera right there on your face.
That's right.
And if they call the right name, you'll see me go, okay.
And if they call the wrong name, I'll go, all right, baby, you ready to go?
You're ready to go.
That's right.
Now, this role, you thought you had this thing locked up.
Didn't Quentin Tarantino call you and say, this is it.
I'm writing a role for you.
We'll see you when we start shooting.
We had this great dinner.
He told me he was writing this new script.
He had this great part for me.
Da, da, da.
I got the script.
I read it.
I was like, yes, this is the role.
This is it.
They called me in one day to kind of read through the role so they can hear
what Jules sounds like.
And I go, well, I got it sold up.
Let me go in and just kind of read.
I went in.
I was reading.
You're loafing.
Yeah.
I'm just kind of hanging out.
You're not giving 110%.
Nah, they're laughing.
They're getting off on it.
And I'm saying, hey, this is going to be a great job.
Sure.
I come to New York.
I'm shooting Fresh.
And all of a sudden I hear, there's this other actor we think we're going to
have to go with.
He came in the room and blew us away.
Excuse me?
Can you write this for me?
So I called my agent, called my manager, called everybody.
They called everybody else.
And all of a sudden I'm in an acting contest with this other actor.
So they call us in on a Sunday.
I get there that Sunday.
There's nobody in Jersey Films.
Everybody's gone.
I found out later they're all off having lunch trying to figure out how they're
going to tell me this guy's come in and really turned it out again.
Oh, my.
I'm like, oh, man.
So that would have killed you.
Oh, hey.
Who was the other guy?
Goofy?
Thank you very much.
Nah, he's a very good actor.
He's actually still in film.
Oh, he's in Pulp Fiction?
Yes, he is.
Oh, that's nice.
So everybody get a little piece of this.
Yeah, so he did get the work.
And he did get the role.
Well, you know, I think that the work you do is just terrific.
And it would be great fun to see you win that night.
It's, geez, it's Monday night, isn't it?
Yes, it is.
I guess I'll see you out there.
I'll see you Monday night.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
I'll see you next time.
