have a seat mike
how you doing congratulations on all your success you were you were on okay
thank you
sir a man starting his own show up back um here's a picture of you on sports
illustrator
that must have been a big thrill for you yeah it was okay it was okay yeah just
okay i have um
the goal fast that i know a lot further than this oh you have more what is your
ultimate goal in
boxing i don't want to be the youngest champion ever and what would you have to
be to be that
i have to be 21 in like eight months so you got a couple years to work with
here don't you yeah
uh now um how did this all begin when did you first start fighting when i was
12.
and did you did was that like in the neighborhood that kind of a deal um no i
was never i was never
like a fighter when i was young i always get picked on and stuff you you were
somebody was picked on yeah
i used to always be smaller uh-huh you guys pick on me yeah then a friend of
mine brought
me upstate new york to customado right and from then on it was like love at
first fight you actually
you actually loved you love doing it unbelievable yeah have you yourself we saw
you punishing some
opponents there have you yourself ever ever been hurt well the objective in
boxing is not to get hurt but
on occasion if you can't avoid it or not you get hit but say i was hurt never
no no uh and uh can i ask you how much
you weigh um 213. 213 is that the desirable weight for you to be fighting at no
um when i fight um
the 20th of this month i'll perhaps be 217. and who are you fighting the 20th
of this month a young
gentleman by the name of mitch blood green he gets very excited when he sees
blood he's a very good
fighter uh-huh he gets excited when he sees blood someone else's blood yeah uh
and he is a good fighter
yes okay mike we have here your record now not all of these guys i've heard of
uh hector mercedes
you knocked him out in one round trent singleton what's he doing now driving
the truck now
you knocked him out in one round don halpin took four rounds to get him yeah uh
larry sims
lorenzo kennedy mike johnson donnie long now these are not
you know top flight contenders i guess like everything you're not into the
boxing business
if you were in a boxing business you would know um the majority of these
fighters
and uh your most recent fight was uh james tillis james is that james quick
tillis and i i've heard of
him and that was 10 rounds right yeah yeah now why did it take you so long to
get rid of him
well um two reasons i just came off the hospital not long ago you've been in
the hospital yeah well
uh nothing serious obviously i had an ear infection i fell off my pigeon coop
uh-huh i have a pigeon
coop i fell off my coop you rate you raise pigeons as a hobby and you fell off
the coop yeah and you and
as a result you got an ear infection yeah yeah and that um you're you're
fighting now about every two
weeks aren't you um yeah twice a month and is that a good idea for me it is
because i love what i'm doing and
uh-huh as you as you notice from watching my fight it's not that i'm getting
afflicted with a lot of
pain or anything yeah yeah when do you even shower after a fight like shower
never uh uh now when
you're in training the the old myth is that you're supposed to stay away from
women now if you're
fighting every two weeks you're always in training right yes now do you do you
are you able to date
women while you're training or not can i tell you something i would like i
would like to date but i
i don't have really time today you know yeah give any girl the um the attention
that she deserves
except lisa bonet i would give her all the attention i would make time to give
her attention
yeah well that's very sweet so um now now who who do you think you're going to
have to fight to get the
championship from will it still when you're ready to make the move will it
still be uh uh michael spinks
well it's hard to say as you notice and they went in boxing and entertainment
the heavyweight division and the
titles are exchangeable like flashlight batteries yeah everybody everybody's
winning the title that's
right their first defense their second offense they're losing the titles yeah
yeah and you never
know with the obligations of the fighters and the networks you never know when
do you think when do you
feel in your own mind you'll be ready for a uh a championship fight well i'm
ready to fight any
time my managers um put up the contract how long do you think it's going to be
well i couldn't state that
right now a year eight months before i'm 21. okay so you're 19 now yeah all
right uh what about jerry
cooney will he still be around you think i i don't know what's with jerry yeah
what kind of a fight
would you have with him um i don't know but um someone was telling me that he
was saying derogatory
things about me in the paper and if the fight ever um came up it would be
astronomical amount of money
and i will look forward to it i wish you nothing but great success and you're
fighting here in the at the
garden right yes the 20th and so that's a big dream for you unbelievable
because out of the whole 108
years of the heavyweight division i'm the youngest heavyweight ever to fight a
main event yeah i could
take you though
we'll be right back
