Pleasure to have you on the, uh, on the program.
It's nice to be here.
Uh, now tell people, and I think people probably know,
but, uh, tell people, uh, how you began, when you began,
and what was significant about that, not only for you, but music of the day.
Well, I was discovered at a party when I was 17 years old.
I just went to this party with my then-boyfriend,
who I was going to marry and have a baby with,
who's now 36, actually, and, uh...
The baby or the boyfriend?
The baby.
But this is before the baby.
Yeah.
And anyway, so I went, um, to this party,
and I was discovered by Andrew Lou Goldham,
who was the manager of the Rolling Stones,
and what Andrew then did was lock Mick and Keith up in the kitchen
and say, write a song for her,
which was the first song they wrote together.
And the song, of course?
Was As Tears Go By.
Oh, yeah, that's a pretty good way to begin.
My God!
Thank you.
And what did that do to you at 17?
What did that do to your world, and what happened to the boyfriend?
Was he still in the picture after that?
He was, yes.
I married him.
I mean, it completely changed my life.
Yeah.
Everything I thought was going to happen didn't happen.
I thought I was probably going to go to university or drama school or something
and do all that.
I didn't do any of that.
I went to the University of Life itself.
Yeah.
And, um, just sort of everything changed,
and I became a star and tried to sort of cope with that thing.
I mean, they used to tell us then, of course,
that this is only going to last two years, darlings, you know,
and then it'll all be over and you can go back and live your life.
But that didn't really happen.
And now, um, are you touring now?
Well, I got very into it.
I got, I got, I am touring now.
I'm on a world tour.
I'm playing at Irving Plaza on the 19th, 21st, and 22nd,
and I'm playing in Chicago and Boston.
And what is that experience like now compared to when you were 17?
Oh, it's much better.
Better now?
Yeah.
I've got, I think I've accepted it.
I think when I was little, when I, I really was like a child, you know.
Well, 17, that is a child.
I think it probably is, yes.
Well, not probably, it actually is.
It is, isn't it?
Don't argue with me about this, for God's sake.
Okay, okay, okay.
I don't know.
I'm sorry, I'm a little, I'm a little empty.
No, no, no, you're all right.
No, no.
Um, you know, when you are 17, you think you're terribly grown up.
Sure.
And you think you know everything and that you're going to be fine
and you have no concept, that you might, I mean, it's now 38 years ago, that.
So, I'm, and now I've, I've really.
You've been in this building before, I'm guessing, right?
I never did Ed Sullivan.
No, is that a fact?
No, I never did.
But I know about it and I've watched it.
Everybody else of that era did, certainly.
I know.
I didn't come to.
What'd I do?
Well, you know, I suppose it's quite classic to have not done Ed Sullivan.
Yeah, I suppose so.
Now, are, are, I'm confused.
Are you going to sing for us tonight?
I certainly am.
That'll be great.
So, that'll happen when we come out.
Yeah.
We'll be right back with Marianne Faithfull.
Ladies and gentlemen, here once again, Marianne Faithfull.
Thank you.
Wherever I go, it's me.
Wherever I go, I want you to know, it's me.
So many things.
How you doing?
Lovely.
So, now you've been in the Ed Sullivan Theater.
I know.
I'm so glad.
Making your debut.
Yes.
Thank you very much.
Marianne Faithfull.
We'll be right back, everybody.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
