How you doing?
Good.
Please have a seat.
I got to tell you something.
There's been a great deal of excitement
and anticipation about your appearance
with us on the program tonight.
Thank you very much for coming by.
Thank you.
You know what?
I'm shaking.
Really?
Yes.
You know what?
Before I come to America,
they said,
you know what, Jackie?
You're on David Letterman's show.
I said, yeah, so what?
That's another...
That's about right.
Yeah, another interview.
But by the time all the friends,
all fans,
and the press,
when I tell them,
I'm on David Letterman,
what, you're on David Letterman?
You know what?
Then keep talking, keep talking.
Now makes me very nervous.
Oh, no.
I've been prepared,
come to this show for 10 days now.
Oh.
I cannot sleep.
What kind of dress I wear.
You're a wreck.
And as soon as I get to New York,
I go to Fifth Avenue,
I buy a new pair of shoes.
That's a lot of new socks.
New dress.
Even my underwear's new.
Yeah.
And I just,
now I know how big you are.
Oh, wow.
And yesterday,
I was with my 2,000 fans,
and I said,
I'm going to David's show tomorrow.
2,000 yelled at the same time.
People yelled.
What are you doing on the Letterman's show?
I said,
I don't know.
Please,
please tell me.
They said,
yes,
they yelled at the same time again,
kick his butt.
No.
I think I have to do something.
Yeah.
And...
That's the only thing I can do.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Over! Over! Over!
Now interview.
Now interview now.
Mr. Chan, party of two, your table is ready, sir.
Get out of there!
Whoa!
Let's talk about the injuries you have sustained because one of the great
attractions about your work and your film, you do everything.
All of the stunts. I understand you even put on your own makeup.
Yes.
I almost did that.
But you've broken, as I mentioned, almost every bone in your body.
Not every bone. I broke three times here, one times here, one here, three,
broken, broken, broken, broken.
Just shoulder, broken ankle, just a little bit.
You know, a couple of days ago, I woke up, I had a fever blister right there.
I think the most dangerous thing, I think most dangerous things are Yugoslavia.
I almost died.
Somebody told me, actually, you have a hole in your head.
Ooh. Oh, man. What do you keep, like, a spare change up there?
Was that the worst of the injuries?
Yeah, almost died.
How did that happen?
I, from the castle, joined the tree, then land on another castle.
Uh-huh.
The tree just broke.
Then I just fall down.
The cameraman, if he pushed me, that was safe.
But the camera, see, I fall down, he get the camera, I run away.
Yeah.
Then he just, down.
I just go down.
But has it ever occurred to you that you don't have to, you're making huge
amounts of money,
you don't have to do all your own stunts?
I, I, I, I like to do it.
Yeah?
I like to, I, I'm happy to do that.
Yeah.
Yeah, don't worry.
Okay, well, I'm not going to worry.
Well, this is something I can cross off my list.
But, but what about guys like Jean-Claude Van Damme and, and the other guy, the,
what's his name, Seagal, Steven Seagal, and, and on and on, those guys.
What about those guys?
I think it's different.
They, they, they were lucky.
They, in America, they, the life in America, very expensive.
Right.
The, the, the producer, the, the company, they won't let them do any stunts.
So what you're saying is they're sissies.
No, that's not.
He said, he says what he said.
Yeah, they're different.
Me, in Asia, our life's so cheap, including me.
We just keep, we hurt, we just do it.
No matter.
As soon as I got, I break my ankle in the ramblin' bounce.
As soon as I break my ankle, I see my leg was like this.
Like that.
Then, I, I, I look at, then I look at the camera, man.
Did you got a shot?
Yeah.
The camera, yes.
Good.
Hospital.
Oh, man.
A lot.
Well, you're, geez, you're a little goofy yourself.
You know, you have guys like, uh, Jean-Claude, uh, Van Damme.
Yeah.
And then you have like, uh, Steven Seagal and, uh, Schwarzenegger and on and on
and on.
And these guys are all, uh, like, uh, big international action-adventure motion
picture stars.
And sooner or later, you know, they think, okay, that's fine.
They'll do one or two.
And then they want to do like musical comedy or something.
And it never works.
And then they have to go back to the other films.
Are there other kinds of films that you would like to make?
Yeah.
I mean, try to, I, I, I, I mean, same thing.
I like to, I don't want to always be the fighting and kicking.
Me neither.
I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to something, something else.
Yeah.
But it doesn't work.
Doesn't work.
Then later on, back to, back to comedy action again.
Uh-huh.
What, what kind of, uh, other films, American films do you like?
What, what influences your work?
Uh, it really influenced me.
It's a silent movie.
Mm-hmm.
You know, when I watch a silent movie,
they, not like, especially like a Gene Kelly's movie.
When, when I watch a Gene Kelly's movie,
like a five minutes, six minutes, just one shot.
No camera trick, no blues.
Just, I sing the ring, I sing the ring.
And jump to, you know, not like right now when you watch MTV.
Yeah.
I watch a lot of dancers.
Sure.
Even two movement or three movement.
Yeah.
Twenty cut.
Exactly.
Bang, bang, bang, bang.
Sure.
You know, with a special effect.
Right.
But, now.
So, so, so this is why I really like to watch a lot of silent movies.
Yeah.
The, the real movie.
I know, the singing in the rain was, was not a silent movie.
But that's, yeah, you know, you know that.
Oh, come on.
Yeah, of course.
But, but I know what you're saying.
Because if you look at the Gene Kelly movies and the Fred Astaire movies.
Yes.
These guys, you know, you're talking about dancing and you think, oh, fine,
dancing, you know,
Macarena, what the hell, they're dancing.
But, but these guys, like you say, I mean, they really existed and performed on
a completely
different level, didn't they?
So, this is why I, I say, I do everything my own stunt, do my own, the own
stunt.
Because I know the audience come to the theater to see me, it's not see the
double.
Yeah.
So, this is why I do everything by.
Yeah, but you do these own, you do your own stunts.
We hear, you know, one time you, like, you broke your arm, one time you broke
your sternum,
you cracked your, you had a thoracic problem, you busted a leg, you get hit in
the head.
I mean, every time you do your own stunts, you get injured.
So, I mean, just my question to you is, maybe let somebody else have a stunt or
two?
This, this is difficult because the audience in the theater, they already know,
this is my trademark now.
So, into the theater, they concentrate.
Right.
That's a Jackie and all.
Right.
So, this is why I have to do my own stunt.
Right.
And, uh, right now, the easy one, somebody do it.
Right.
But I'm guessing the audience now would rather have you, you know, not doing
the stunts and
alive versus doing the stunts and dead.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah, I, yeah.
I, yes, I really hope so.
But, you know, they tell me that in this one film, you got hit by a helicopter.
Yes, a moving helicopter.
Now, that looks bad on the accident report.
Yep.
Hit by a helicopter.
File this with OSHA.
We have another claim.
It was a hit by a helicopter.
We have it on...
When you see the outtake, on my film, there's an outtake.
Mm-hmm.
When you see the film, you know what happened.
I, hit by the helicopter.
I was totally fainted by, like, uh...
You fainted.
That's right.
That's what happens.
Yeah, fainted.
Most people, that's right.
When you get hit by a helicopter, you're gonna faint.
Just count on it.
You're going out.
Then...
Whoo!
Oh, I was hit by a copter.
You just...
You can't help it.
You can't help it.
Then...
What's the moving train?
Let's see you getting hit by a helicopter.
Let's see what this looks like.
Roll it!
Yeah.
This one.
There you are.
That ain't a good idea.
That's not a good idea.
I know it's an accident.
Yeah, of course it's an accident.
Then I fented.
That's an accident.
All the blood comes out.
You know, Jackie, what I wanted to talk to you a little bit about.
You were at an historic event and occasion in Hong Kong about a week ago.
What was that like?
For, yeah, for some other people, exciting for me.
It was very boring.
Boring?
Because we already prepared for many years.
People knew this was coming.
Yeah, we had known it was coming.
But just...
China government, British government, we showed the whole world.
We hang over.
Hand over.
That's right, hand over, yeah.
Hang over, okay.
And...
Oh, the anglers.
Then, and that day, I would just sit there.
I would only invite 4,000 people.
You know, 6 million people in Hong Kong.
I'm the only one of the actors.
Well, that's great.
And I sit there, you know, I saw some people in front of me.
Nodding off.
There's nothing off.
Then I try to look at it.
Then suddenly I see the British flight going down.
Yeah.
Chinese flight going up.
Oh, finished.
Eight hours.
You know, I see eight hours there.
That is great.
But how was the food?
They must have had pretty good food.
There's probably good eats there, huh?
No.
No, really?
You can imagine 4,000 people at the same time.
The kitchen is very small.
Everything is cold.
I didn't know.
I didn't know that.
Did you meet the British and Chinese leaders while you were there?
Yeah, I did meet a Chinese leader.
But I just shake hands, causing a bite.
The first time I met him, there's a good job.
Thank you.
You just go away.
But I did meet, a long time ago, I did meet the Queen.
British royalty.
Yeah.
Wow, the Queen.
Then, and the day coming, you know, at that time my English not very good.
Mm-hmm.
I standing there, you know, they have a, ladies and gentlemen, after the Queen
coming, you have
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Then I asked, well, what did he, what did he say?
Mm-hmm.
Uh, when the Queen coming, if she use hand, then your hand, no, you have to say,
your Royal
Highness.
Highness, yes.
Okay.
Then I said, what, what, what, your Royal Highness, okay.
Then we, I stand there, your Royal Highness, your Royal Highness.
I just keep, I just keep practicing.
Right.
Then, one hour later, then she's coming.
Mm-hmm.
Then, I saw, I saw her just standing by, I talk and run, go, go, go.
I said, it's okay.
Then, what, what's her name again?
I just, when she's coming down, we're only one of them.
But, she's still standing there.
Uh-huh.
I said, please go away.
Yeah.
Please go away.
Hit the road.
Yes.
Pretty good.
Then, suddenly, then my head, then she's still standing there.
There's some, ah, she, she's the Jackie Chan, the big action star, blah, blah,
blah.
Then she talking to me.
Yeah.
What can you do?
Somehow, like you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
When she got, oh my God.
Yeah.
How many films have you made?
A lot.
Like 40 films?
Since when a child actor.
Really?
More than 100.
Is that right?
Yeah.
I was child actor, stuntman, poor stuntman, dance stunt coordinator, actor,
director, producer.
And, and you're, you're like one of the biggest stars in the world, aren't you?
No.
When it comes to just box office receipts?
No.
No, no, no.
I mean, all right.
No.
But your, your, your films go all over the world, don't they?
There's probably not a country your films don't play.
Yeah.
Is that, is that safe to say that?
Before.
Before, yes.
Before my show, my movie only show in Asia.
Uh-huh.
But suddenly then I would just want to come to America.
Yeah.
Now you're like a big deal everywhere.
Sure.
Really, what's your problem?
Because the English.
Oh, you speak very.
No.
And that time I only, where are you from, from Hong Kong, my name is Jackie
Chan.
You know, I remember first time when I come to America, the language for me is
a very problem.
Every time I go to the elevator, you know, elevator, the American, especially
in LA.
The, the American people can like this.
Yeah.
I'm sorry, what do they do?
What do they do to you?
Like this.
They do, really?
What part of LA do they do that?
What do they say?
What do they say?
What do they say?
What do they say?
What do they say?
Good morning.
Where are you from?
Huh?
From Hong Kong.
Then he keep talking.
Yeah.
Then next time, next time when I'm in the elevator, when people come in, I just
tie my shoes.
Right.
Until everybody goes.
Then I get up.
Then come in again.
Then I do it again.
All right.
It drives me crazy.
The aesthetics in the elevator.
But now what would happen, for example, when you wanted to go into a restaurant
to eat,
if you weren't familiar with the language, how would you eat in a restaurant?
I remember first time when the producer just put me in the restaurant, then go
away.
No, no.
Then I just get there.
Then what should I order?
What should I order?
Then I've been practicing milk, egg, toast, and bacon.
Milk, bacon.
Thank you.
Then the girl comes, hand me.
Right.
She give me the menu.
Then I pretend to look.
Then she go away.
I say, "Why did she go away?"
Then I pretend to look, look.
Then suddenly she coming back.
Then I say, "Milk, bacon, toast, egg.
Thank you."
Then she, "Okay.
How would you like the egg?"
I say, "Huh?"
"Huh?"
"Huh?"
"Hey, hey, hey.
How would you like the egg?"
"No egg, bacon, milk, toast.
Thank you."
So difficult, you know, with any English.
I couldn't do it.
I couldn't go to your home country and survive.
Here's a kind of a serious thing, because I would be worried if I were you that
the guys
were always going to try me.
You know, like you're the fastest gun in the West.
Yes.
So somebody's always going to mouth off and try you.
Have you ever been in an actual fight where somebody was really on you and you
had to defend yourself?
Yes, I remember the worst things when I was 18.
I was on the street with my three martial art brothers.
We called brothers.
We walk around across the street.
I see some motorcycle gangs.
Then I just said, "One day, I want to get the bite."
Oh, yeah.
You know, young guy.
Trouble with the finger again.
Yeah.
Then the guy, boom, boom, boom, boom.
What the hell are you looking for?
Yeah.
I said, "Wow."
Then I stopped.
But my friend, just boom, one kick.
Ah.
All the motorcycle, boom, boom, boom, boom.
Then by the time I look at it, I said, "Don't."
My friend, run.
My other friend, run in.
They front, punch each other.
Then me, what I'm going to do?
Yeah.
Okay.
I go in, pa, pa, pa, pa, pa, pa, pa.
Then I just hear, "Oh, oh, boom."
About like 40 seconds, all down.
They all down.
We run.
We run back.
My hand was just swallowed.
I was shaking.
I see all the ambulance come, the police.
Then I saw my hand.
There's white things.
The bone coming out.
Oh, my God.
And every time I push down, it hurt.
I don't want to go to the hospital because the police things.
Two days later, I push, push.
Not the blood.
It's the blood with water.
Mm-hmm.
Then I see the bone.
Then I click.
Bloop!
Comes out.
You know what?
The bone comes out?
No.
It's the tooth.
I think it's by the punch.
Oh, man.
Oh, that guy's hurt.
Yeah.
That guy's hurt.
That guy's hurt.
That's nice.
That's nice.
That's nice.
That's a big shot.
That's nice.
That's nice.
The worst experience is my finger.
Really?
What happened to your finger?
I was in Ivo Tower doing a stunt, you know, flipping the stunt guy.
And I would flip the stunt guy, stunt guy, and the other side doing the 360,
four down.
I would twist my finger, my crack.
Ooh.
Then, boom!
Then everybody run to the stunt guy.
Are you okay?
Nobody care about me.
Yeah.
Well, that's the right issue.
Then I said, oh, okay, okay.
I just don't want to talk about it.
From that day, five days, I always know, no matter where I'm going, I just just
swallow.
Very sore.
Was it dislocated or tendons pulled or something?
Oh, a tendon, I think.
Yeah.
Then I, after five days later, we're going to America.
Mm-hmm.
Then I get on the airplane.
I was so tired.
I lay down.
I just sleeping.
Middle of the night, the air hostess come and said, Mr. Chen, you like
something?
No.
I said, no, I'm tired.
Then he looked at my, you know, as soon as I get up, I just do this, you know.
But the problem is, I with my, the blanket.
Mm-hmm.
You know, I was, I was doing this.
And, and the, and the air hostess, she was bent down.
She was bent down.
Mr. Chen, you want some water?
I said, no.
Yeah.
Then she looked down to me.
Look down, look back, smile.
Then I said, yeah, my fingers hurt.
Oh.
No, I didn't, I didn't say, I didn't say it.
I just, I mean, yeah.
Yeah.
Then she, she's standing up.
She's standing up, hurry up, go away with a funny face.
Yeah.
I think so.
Then, then I look at myself.
Oh, yeah.
Oh.
No.
Yeah.
You know, she might tell the whole airplane.
Yes.
Then I, I, I get up like this.
Uh, excuse me, can I have some water?
Uh-huh.
I, I want some water.
Then her face, yeah.
Her face like this.
Yeah.
All right.
And, and by that time.
Oh, my God.
Here.
Here.
I'll take care of your finger.
Ah.
And by that time, after I get off the airplane, I standing up.
I went on the line with my backpack.
Bye-bye.
I don't know which, which air hostess.
I just, bye-bye, hi, see you next time.
I, that's a very, very embarrassing.
Oh, I would think so.
Yeah.
But good cover.
The problem is she don't believe it.
Yeah, I know.
You know how I'm learning English?
How's that?
What's that?
That's my book.
What did you say?
You said, you know how I'm learning English?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I said, how's that?
When I'm learning my English, from all the song, country songs.
Country songs.
You know, Vince Gill is here.
Yeah.
Well, not right now, but he'll.
Because, because when, upside down.
Oh, yeah.
I know.
I get it.
Jackie Chan.
Jackie Chan.
Why?
Because I know if I have to come into American market, I have to learn some
English.
So this is why, how, what's the way to learn it?
Then later on, then I find out there's a country song.
Then I listen Kenny Rogers, like Winnie Nelson.
Then I can, because the song is very slow.
You are always on my mind.
You are always on my mind.
Then, you know, then Lincoln, I find out I really can use the word in the real
life.
Then I talk to the girl, you're always on my mind.
Then I really, then I learned something from some other star, like, like Elvis.
Elvis?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And you, you, you sing, you do like an Elvis impression, don't you?
Yeah.
I, I practice a lot Elvis song, like, uh, uh, uh, Can't Help Find Love.
Mm-hmm.
And, uh, wise man.
Then I really say something in the real life.
Sure.
To talk to the girl.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And actually, and actually, I'm pretty good singer.
Pretty good singer?
Yeah.
Because I want to prove I'm a multi-talent.
Besides, besides I can fight, I can act, I do comedy, and then I can sing.
All right.
You're going to sing for us something here tonight?
If you want, I sing special for you.
Yeah.
Okay.
Cool.
Cool.
Well, you have a, you have a microphone, or a?
Yeah.
And, Can't Help Find Love.
Okay.
Okay.
For you, David.
Thank you very much.
Wise men say only who I see. But I can't help falling in love with you. Like a
river flow, surely to the sea.
Only shall we know something I'll never be.
Take my hand, take my whole life too. For I can't help falling in love with you.
I'll do my best. Thank you very much.
Jackie Chan, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you.
Well, good job, Jackie.
Thank you.
I'll do my best. Thank you very much.
Jackie Chan, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you.
Well, good job, Jackie.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I'll do my best. Thank you very much.
Jackie Chan, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you.
Well, good job, Jackie.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Jackie Chan, ladies and gentlemen.
Well, good job, Jackie.

I said,
I don't know.
Please,
please tell me.
They said,
yes,
they yelled at the same time again,
kick his butt.
No.
I think I have to do something.
Yeah.
And...
That's the only thing I can do.
Okay.
Okay.

What do t
