It's time for the Piedmont Bird Caller winners, and our first guests are the
winners of Piedmont, California's 39th Annual High School Bird Calling
Competition.
Please welcome third place team Addison Duke and John Edmonds. Come on out,
folks.
How do you do?
Hi, Addison.
Yes.
Nice to see you.
John, good to have you here.
Welcome to the program, and what grade are you guys in in high school?
We're going into our senior year.
So you just completed your junior year. What will you be doing for the summer?
Anything good?
I'm taking classes at Academy of Art University there in the city, San
Francisco.
What kind of art are you interested in?
3D modeling and animation.
Wow. So you do that with computers and stuff?
Yes.
Well, good for you. That's pretty much the way of the future, isn't it?
Yeah.
Yeah. And how about you, sir? What will you be doing?
I'm going to be lifeguarding this summer at the Piedmont Swim Club.
Wow. Good for you.
Yeah.
Now that, and nothing against you, because that sounds like a fine gig.
But this is an excellent way to meet chicks, isn't it?
Excellent way to meet chicks.
And if you don't meet them, at least you're around them, right?
Yeah.
All right. Is this your first year in the competition, guys?
Yes.
And what motivated you to enter?
It's just a great Piedmont tradition. Wanted to get into it.
Was it fun?
Yeah.
Now, before you get into it, did you know anything about birds at all?
No.
No.
No.
And now you know something about birds and you have an appreciation for birds.
Is that right?
Yes.
Okay. All right. Tell us about your bird.
Our bird's known as the limpkin.
The limpkin. Now that's a, that sounds like a, that's a phony bird, isn't it?
You made that up?
What is a, what is a limpkin?
It's a bird that lives in Florida in the, it's a marsh-dwelling bird. It's
about 25 to 27 inches tall.
Wow.
Yeah.
Yeah. Actually, um...
That's a pretty good-sized bird, though, really.
Yeah. It eats, uh, apple snails and other water insects, and it actually was
mistaken for a woman in distress, uh, by early colonial settlers.
Because of its call?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And not migratory? It always stays in the marshes?
Mostly in the marshes, yeah.
Okay.
And the eggs are, like, really big.
Not, uh, giant eggs.
Uh...
So, easy omelets, then, wouldn't it be?
Uh, and it takes two of you guys to do this, is that right?
Correct.
Okay, here we go. It's, uh, Addison and John, and it's the limpkin.
Very nice. Addison, thank you very much. Very impressive.
Good luck to you, gentlemen. Congratulations.
Thank you very much.
Addison and John, your third-place winners.
Now, you see why it takes two to make that the call.
You are.
Uh, Chloe Finneman and, uh, Claire Newman, uh, ladies and gentlemen.
Come on out, kids, and say hello.
Hi, Chloe.
Hi.
Is it Finneman?
Fineman.
Fineman, I'm sorry.
It's okay.
And, uh, Claire.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
And you guys are in, uh, what grades?
I'm gonna be a senior.
You'll be a senior?
And I'll be a junior.
You'll be a junior.
And, uh, you've been friends for a long time?
Yeah.
Actually, yeah.
And what got you interested in the bird calling?
Well, we felt the inner bird.
And, uh, we...
It's a Piedmont tradition.
It's a common feeling.
It's a common feeling.
I have not, uh, I have not felt the inner bird.
No.
I'll take your word for it.
Uh, but it was a lot of fun?
Yeah.
And you do a lot of research on the bird?
Yes.
Now, is this a bird you could actually observe, or is it not the native to your
area?
Well, it's, it originates in southern India.
Right.
But you see it in the zoo everywhere.
You see them in the zoo?
Yes.
All right.
And your, your bird, let's tell the folks what it is.
We chose the peafowl.
The peafowl.
Now, again, I've never heard of the peafowl.
Right.
Because, um, it's more commonly known as the peacock.
Yes.
Ah, the peacock.
The peacock is the male, and the female is the peahen.
And the offspring are the peah chicks.
I see.
And, and, and, and coincidentally, today at Rupert's, the special was pea soup.
Did you know that?
Yeah.
So, so, so, so peafowl is the generic term for all of them.
Yeah.
The peahen, the peacock, and the.
It's the species of peach.
Okay.
All right.
Uh, so the, and the, the, the, the males are the ones that are, uh, the
elaborate plumage.
Right.
Uh, okay.
So it's the peafowl, and I bet this is going to be something strange.
Am I right about that?
Yeah.
Yes.
Sounds like a dying cat.
All right.
Oh.
Uh, Chloe Feinman and Claire Newman, it's the peafowl.
Take it away.
Wow.
Very dramatic.
Good luck to you.
Thank you very much.
Nice meeting you.
Nice job.
There's your second place team.
Chloe Feinman and Claire Newman, ladies and gentlemen.
What do you think of that?
I can see why it takes two of them to make that sense.
But, but that really was dramatic, wasn't it?
Sure was, yeah.
All right.
Now say hello to Lacey Halliwell, Brandon Paris, and Bunny Rutherford, uh, and
they are
your first place team this year, ladies and gentlemen.
Lacey, how are you?
Nice to see you.
Brandon, pleasure to see you.
Bunny, nice to see you.
And, uh, you, you've all graduated this year.
Is that right?
Yes.
And are you going to go to school after high school?
Um, yes.
I'm going to Diablo Valley College.
What will you do there?
Um, I'm not sure yet, but...
Did you, did you get in on a bird-calling scholarship?
No.
And how about you, sir?
I'm hoping to walk on at UCLA, their football team.
Oh, wow.
That'll be exciting for you, right?
And your father played football?
Yeah, he did.
Father played for the 49ers, is that right?
Yeah.
And his name was?
Boba Paris.
Boba Paris?
What, what was his position?
Uh, line, some type of lineman.
I'm not sure which one.
Yeah, when's the last time you talked to Dan?
Just ask him what he played.
Uh, and you, where will you be going to school?
Um, I'll be going to the University of Vermont.
Mm-hmm.
And, oh, right at our neck of the woods.
Yeah.
What will you be doing there?
Um, I'm going to study psychology and biology.
Great.
Well, that's a great combination, and you'll have fun up there.
And, uh, you guys, you guys are the big winners, and your bird is the...
Arctic Loon.
Arctic Loon.
And, uh, a water bird that's found above the Arctic Circle only, is that right?
Um, mostly in northern parts of Europe and America, North America and Asia.
I see.
So, how far south in America would we have it?
Do we have them here in New York?
Um, probably not.
Probably not.
It's mainly Canada and Alaska.
I see.
And, uh, does not migrate, stays up there the whole time?
We believe so, yeah.
You know, you can pretty much tell me anything, because...
I have no idea.
And, uh, and really very little interest.
Um...
Okay.
So, this is impressive, because it takes three people, and you're the big
winner.
And what do you receive for being the winners?
Um...
A trophy, a trophy, and...
We got our name on it.
Yeah, just so we have to keep it for a weekend.
So, but you're now part of the tradition of the Piedmont competition.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Uh, this now, hang on to something, ladies and gentlemen.
It's the Arctic Loon.
Take it away, kids.
Beautiful.
Beautiful.
Congratulations.
Good luck at UCLA, sir.
Good luck at Vermont, thank you.
There's your winners from the, uh, Piedmont bird calling competition, ladies
and gentlemen.
Now, you want to...
Yes, everybody come out here, and, uh, we want everybody to do their individual
performance.
This would be crazy.
Thank you, and congratulations, everybody.
Take it away.
Here we go.
Thank you.
