Our next guest is a talented young actress starring in a new film entitled True
Grit,
which opens on December 22nd.
So there's something. There's like an early Christmas present right there.
Please say hello to Haley Steinfeld.
Thank you for being here, Haley. You look very nice today.
Thank you.
That's a lovely dress.
You know, having seen the film, knowing you were, I guess, 13 when you were
actually in the movie,
I didn't realize you were as statuesque as you are.
You're much taller than I thought.
Yes.
Yeah. How tall are you?
I think I'm about 5'7 without heels.
Oh. So without the heels, you're 5'7.
Yes.
So that's not really very tall at all, is it?
Not really.
I'm sorry.
It's your first movie, is it, right? It can't be your first movie.
No, it's my first.
How do you just get to be in a movie when you're 13 years old?
Well, I mean, I've been studying for a very long time.
When I first...
Studying acting?
Yes.
Yeah.
Taking classes, working with different coaches.
When I first started, my mom made me study for one full year before we took any
step further
so that, you know, she would make sure I was consistent with it.
Where were you from?
Los Angeles.
And Ed, how did you know that this is something you wanted to, at that point,
devote a year of your life to studying?
You know, I just...
Honestly, I just found different inspirations that kind of, you know, pulled me
into the whole, you know, acting world.
My cousin at the time was doing commercials and a close family friend of mine
was doing, she was doing a play, a school play called Film On.
And I don't know, just to see people that, you know, I knew and grew up with do
something like that just made me, you know, made it believable and made it, you
know, I could do that.
So you realize that this is a desire you had and, oh, it actually can be
accomplished.
Well, good for you.
But to start out, I mean, this is not like one of those little, well, I don't
know what I'm trying to say.
This is like a big deal.
Yeah.
It's not like one of those little, this is a really big movie.
Yes.
It's not like one of those little, you know, you know what I'm talking about.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
You have Jeff Bridges.
Yes.
Oh, my gosh.
And you have Matt Damon and both Academy Award winners.
Yes.
And a 13-year-old and with guns.
Yeah.
Now, do you know anything about the Old West?
This was shot in Arizona and New Mexico.
Do you know anything about?
Well, actually, it was shot in New Mexico and Texas.
And not, I mean, I know a little bit more now, obviously, than I did before the
film.
But, I mean, the Old West and, you know, Westerns, you know, a completely new
genre that I've been, you know, introduced to the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
And, you know, I've been in the past.
They're so easygoing.
It was...
Really?
What did you learn from acting with Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon?
What did I learn?
Mm-hmm.
I feel like just watching them and interacting with them almost...
I learn more from their actions than any of their words.
And, I don't know, I just feel like it's like the little things that I picked
up on that, you know, always take with me.
Mm-hmm.
Did they tell you anything?
Did they give you any advice?
The best advice that they've both given me, actually, is to not take anything
too seriously.
Mm-hmm.
Well, that's good in life, generally.
Yes, of course.
And they've given me the perfect example of that.
Yeah.
We have a clip.
Did you see the True Grit with John Wayne?
Did you see that one?
Yes, I saw the original one.
What did you think of that movie?
That was great.
Yeah.
And John Wayne...
Boy, there's an imposing character in life as well as on the screen, huh?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
We have a clip here, Haley.
What are we going to see?
Do you know?
Yes, the clip you're about to see is when Maddie Ross confronts...
Your character.
Yes, my character convinces Rooster Cogburn, Jeff Bridges' character, to find
the killer of her father.
This is based on a novel.
I wonder if things like this actually happened.
You know, I thought that too, actually.
Yeah.
I'll bet there must be an example similar to this in history.
Yeah, for sure.
Sure.
Okay, let's take a look at a clip here.
It's True Grit opens December 22nd, everybody.
You see?
You see what I'm talking about?
Well, congratulations on a very exciting film debut.
Thank you.
Good luck to you with this film and the rest of your career.
Thank you.
Great pleasure meeting you.
Thank you very much.
Hailey Steinfeld, ladies and gentlemen.
