You and Ron Howard have had a great professional career.
I've made four movies with Ron.
I know you're friends as well, right?
Oh, yeah, we're pretty good buddies.
And you do an impression of Ron Howard.
It's devastating.
Yeah, and the last time, it was something that was underwater.
And do you have, you can do that again or anything else?
Oh, I don't think for you, Ted, you know.
Yeah, a little Ron Howard.
Okay, so we were making Angels and Demons in Rome,
and we had a day off, and it just happened to be a day off
at a time when Italy was playing some other European country
for some soccer trophy.
It's a big deal.
It's the type of thing that if Italy wins,
it's mayhem in the streets,
and literally, like, people are trying to conceive children that night.
We must conceive a child tonight, tonight,
when Italy beats the France tonight.
We make a baby, come on.
So it's like open kind of stuff going on.
Two, two Academy Awards right there.
Two.
I actually said, we make a baby.
We make a baby.
And if Italy loses, well, then there's just this,
you can roll up, everybody goes home.
That's right.
They don't do anything.
They pretend to free.
And it just so happened that Italy lost.
So we had all of Rome to ourselves this night.
We went to the Piazza Navona, which is a pretty cool thing.
About 11 o'clock at night, we went to the Piazza Navona,
where there's one guy who took care of us in the movie.
He was always open for us.
And we get to the Piazza Navona with Fountains by Bernini,
and there just so happened to be this collection of fans
of a cappella sinners.
They loved to sing a cappella,
and they were having a rehearsal
in the middle of this abandoned 12th century renaissance Italy.
It was fantastic.
And so as we're walking across the cobblestones of this abandoned,
we could hear,
beautiful, stunning.
And as we got closer,
they recognized Ron Howard,
and guess what song they busted out into?
Sunday, Monday, happy days.
Today is the happy days.
But in multiple harmony,
they were in a big circle.
What a day.
And Ron, you know,
he loves it.
And he starts dancing around a little bit,
you know,
and he starts doing his smile.
And then we said,
Ron, sing along.
It's Saturday.
He's crossing by.
He's happy.
I don't know the words.
I don't know the words.
He's happy days are binding yours.
Happy days.
That was great.
That was great.
I can't believe that.
So that was,
that was Ron.
That's.
One second.
How you doing?
My comedy bit just backfired.
What happened, buddy?
I got a mouthful of Pop-Tarts.
It's going to take me a while.
Here, let me tell you how to get out of this.
Spit take.
That's how you get out.
That is so funny, Dave.
Yee, buddy.
My God.
Great to be back.
Thank you for having me.
You look fantastic, by the way.
You know,
there are a few people in the world
that I find remarkable
that I, I like.
I'm very fond of.
I'm very fond of you.
I wish we were closer.
But beyond that,
I, I would like to be a member of your family.
No way.
All right, well, if you want to talk it over with Rita,
you can get, you can get back to me.
What can I get you?
What can I get you?
Cottage cheese to keep me trim, fruit to keep me regular, and give me a big-ass
biscuit.
This is how you're going to say the line?
And give me a big-ass biscuit.
Give me a big-ass biscuit.
Biff, it's not Hamlet.
I think you can just come out and say it.
And give me a big-ass biscuit.
And give me a big-ass biscuit.
No.
Give me, pause, a big-ass biscuit.
And give me a big-ass biscuit.
No, I want you to say pause.
I think there's a very good chance that you'll end up in the, in the film.
But don't worry, man.
There's a lot of, a lot of, a lot of great actors were cut out of films.
Have you ever been cut out of one?
Uh, uh, I was cut out of Godfather Part II.
Yeah.
Who did you play?
I was the funny cop.
Here it is.
My big scene in the Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts movie, Larry Crown.
I just choose to keep me trim, proof to keep me regular, and give me a big-ass
biscuit.
And here's how the scene actually appears in the movie.
That's right.
Chicken bite.
Take that, Larry.
So, Tom, you've cut my line because of time?
That, and because you were terrible.
All right, here we go.
What is Tom's middle name, Julia?
What is Tom's middle name?
Uh, Jeffrey.
Jefferson.
Thomas.
Jane.
Jeffrey.
Woo!
There it is.
There it is.
I heard a thing.
Did you hear a thing?
We are off to a surprising start.
Did you hear a thing?
Did we, did we, did we hear a ding?
We didn't hear a ding.
No, I heard one.
Okay.
I hear a ding-a-ling.
Because, oh, no.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you, Will.
Uh, Julia.
Yes?
How many children does Tom have, Tom Hanks?
Uh, four, as far as he knows.
Tom, how old are the twins?
Can you give us a hint on that one?
And which one, and which one's older?
America's hanging on the information.
Yeah.
Now, when Tom's family came to this country, what was Hanks shortened from?
Many, many names changed when, uh, folks immigrated to the United States,
seeking a better land for, a better life for their families.
Often encouraged to change their names.
Hankinsack.
What was that again?
Hankin, Hank Schmunger.
I think, I think, I think Tom has printed his own cards.
Who does Tom consider to be the finest actor of his generation?
I know the answer to this.
Abe Vigoda.
Or, or, um, um, Maude.
B. Arthur.
B. Arthur.
B. Arthur.
Yeah.
I have to be honest.
What about, what about that?
How about you?
Who do you consider to be, uh, looking at the, uh, great pantheon of actors,
past and present?
Um.
That's pathetic.
That is pathetic.
I'm off camera.
How about Spencer Tracy, Tom?
You like Spencer Tracy?
Yeah, oh, yes.
He died.
Yeah.
Bummer.
No, I mean, you can't pick him.
No, there's so many of them.
You can't, you can't pick him because he's dead?
Well, right?
Well, pick somebody that you like.
Um.
A boy or a girl.
Well, why can't we have both?
That would make them twins!
Okay, here we go.
Wait, I have a question.
Yeah.
Hey, I did this yesterday, so don't even bother with me.
Is any of this really going to get people to go see our movie?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Hopeless.
Oh, yeah.
Nobody does this show to get people to see their movie.
Wow.
Can you get Mrs. Letterman on the line?
You folks seen Star Wars?
How old is, uh, Tom?
With his tapes or without his tapes?
Right?
61?
51.
60?
Oh.
Oh.
Uh, that was for a different question.
That was a different question.
Actually, I would, look, it's Christmas time.
I would actually like to.
Now, do you have a greeting of your own?
I do, I do.
Christmas is tough at our house because, um, there's a couple of big birthdays
every Christmas.
On the 25th, of course, there's the birthday of the baby Jesus.
Right.
Uh, and then, right, on the 26th is my niece and one of my kids.
And we usually, like, would travel on their birthdays and they, oh, this is
great.
Happy birthday to me.
Great.
Great.
Let's get up, kid.
Guess what we're doing for your birthday.
We're going to the airport.
Thank you.
Oh, great.
We're on a plane now.
It's my birthday, everybody.
Nothing.
Nothing.
So, we got to figure out.
So, I, I, I, on their sake, and to get a jump on the holidays.
Please do.
If I could.
Be my guest.
Whatever you need.
Everything.
If I could get a, I need a camera.
You know what this is, don't you, Dave?
Oh, it looks like it's a mistletoe.
You bet it is, Dave.
And I, I just want to give a little, what camera should I do this?
This is just.
You pick.
You're the man.
I can get the mic down low as well.
All right.
I got a really special moment that I just want to say.
You want me to.
Merry Christmas, baby.
Yeah.
Now, Dave.
Yeah.
Dave, you want some of this action?
No, I don't.
Here.
Will you take care of that?
You mind taking care of that?
Sorry, let me get it.
Here, we got some Windex right here.
Oh, Windex right here.
Sorry about that.
That's what we were looking for.
Hey, you know what?
And here's the bad news.
I've had a cold.
Thanks, Tom.
I feel bad.
Thank you.
Let's talk about the new HBO project.
And by God.
I'm very proud of this.
You should be proud.
You've done great work at HBO.
You've done Band of Brothers.
Yes.
Pacific.
John Adams.
Yep, yep, Pacific.
John Adams, right?
Yeah, yeah.
We've got a great relationship with HBO.
And so anytime I can find, you know, a piece of American history that I think
is uncovered.
You do a nice job with those.
They give me a couple hundred million bucks and I get to do what I want.
Tell us about the new one.
Well, the new one, I discovered this story a couple years ago and I thought, no
one has
ever, ever said this.
And I think it's an amazing aspect of what daily life in America has become
because of this
man.
And I played the man.
And we made this miniseries for HBO, which, look, you know, we've done pretty
good.
So I think it's going to win.
Do we just, do we show a clip here?
We have a clip of the new HBO miniseries.
What's, you know, the name of it?
Well, it's, it's about Burt Loomis.
Oh, Burt?
Yeah.
Burt Loomis.
Burt Loomis.
Take a look.
Tom Hanks.
No.
No.
Rectangular.
Pup tarts.
It's not flat enough.
An 11-part miniseries event.
It's not a rectangle!
Coming soon to HBO.
Go back.
Wow.
Let's talk politics.
I know you, early on, a surprising position for you early on in the campaign.
Now, normally, okay, all right, I had a flirtation with a candidate.
I'm now pretty much going, I'm sticking with Bam Bam on this one.
I'm going for him.
Bam Bam.
Bam Bam.
But there was a time, there was a time, Dave, where, remember back in, when Newt
Gingrich
was the frontrunner for President of the United States?
Yes, yes.
Now, I pay attention to the front riders because, you know, they might invite
me to stuff later
on, you know, if they win or something like that.
Right.
So, Newt Gingrich, he won in one of the Carolinas, I can't remember which state
it was.
And then the next week, he was in Florida, right, running for President of the
United States,
and Newt Gingrich, who I normally would never pay too much attention to, said
this, and it blew my mind.
He said, at the end of my second administration, there will be a permanently
manned colony on the moon.
I'm going to the moon, Dave.
This is what I thought.
I thought, at last!
Vision!
Yeah.
Moving forward.
Newt Gingrich is going to put people on the moon?
I'm going to be one of them.
Right.
I went Newt Gingrich nuts.
I literally sent him to tell him, Mr. Farmer, Speaker of the House of
Representatives,
I, Tom Hanks, choose to go to the moon.
Sign me up.
I am going to, I, this man has got to become President of the United States.
I made announcements to the kids.
Kids, say goodbye to dad.
Papu is going to the moon.
Going to the moon.
I'm going to, I'm going to ride in rocket ships.
I'm going to wear space helmets.
Right.
I'm going to talk to computers.
Yes.
I'm going to live on the moon.
Right.
What I've wanted to do since I was 12 years old, Dave, get us out of here.
Let's go to the moon.
I'm going to be citizen number six of moon base Calista.
That is where I'm going.
So I immediately, I immediately said, what can I do in order to get Newt Gingrich
elected
president?
The question is quite bumper stickers.
That's right where I went.
Exactly.
Now, I don't know, I don't know anything about printed up bumper stickers, but
I called up
this prop guy I know from a movie.
I said, how do you, can you get bumper stickers made, Tom?
Props, bumper stickers.
What do you need?
I said, I want to get, I want bumper stickers that will say Newt in 12.
Newt in 12.
And I'm going to slap them on as many, how do they, they said they used to come
in a
gross.
How much is a gross?
120,000 bumper stickers.
I say, bang, get me a, I want them to say Newt in 12.
Yeah.
Newt in 12.
He said, they're on their way.
Whoa.
In between the time, I guess he phoned in that order and I got them, Newt in 12.
He didn't, he didn't have it.
What happened to the moon colony?
I don't know.
Where is America when they have a choice before them?
Newt is out.
About three weeks ago, I got 12 crates of bumper stickers delivered to the
house.
They said, now here's the problem.
If you're going to order bumper stickers, don't phone in the order.
Oh, yeah.
Because my guy, he, he sent it in and this is what came out.
Newton 12.
Newton 12.
Now, what the heck?
That's not going to do it.
I don't know what this means.
No.
What is it?
This is like, this could be anything.
It's like, is it a new snack cookie?
Yeah.
Is it like one of those things that say, Newton 12, call your doctor if your,
if your erection
lasts for more than four hours.
I have no idea.
But that now.
There you go.
Is it?
And it's just too late.
It's too late.
I'm sorry.
I want to show an example of your early work.
Oh, thank you.
Finally, we get around to the reason.
I think this would be the 70s, in the 70s some period.
This would be, I will tell you, this is a bit of a historic clip because if I
hadn't
done this episode of this certain show, the writers would not have told Ron
Howard that
maybe I should come in and audition for a movie called Splash.
Oh, my God.
So, this is, uh.
But now, I love Ron Howard.
Ron's great.
Ron's great.
He's just great.
I don't.
Okay, okay.
Are you going to show the clip?
Are you doing Dave?
Can you show the clip?
Try to show the clip.
No reason to do these shows unless they show a clip.
So, if you can't get Dave to show the clip, you know, it's a, that's a
conversation.
He's, I wish, I wish he and I were good friends.
I, I assume you two are good friends.
Yeah, we, we compare notes and we compare notes and we go to ball games
together.
You and I have no relationship beyond this desk and this couch, but other than
that.
It's regrettable, don't you think?
Or maybe not.
You know, we'll get around to it.
We'll get around to it.
We'll get around to it.
You and I will start playing.
You know, believe me, you're going to have nothing to do pretty soon.
I know, that's right, you know, so, I don't, I don't know.
See, that's why I think if I had the kind of brain you had, I'd come up with
great ideas
like the typewriter app.
Oh, no, here's what you're going to do, Dave.
First of all, you're going to eat every meal standing up.
You'll just be like, no, no, this is good, this is good.
I eat every meal.
I'm like a horse.
I'm eating everything standing up.
No, I'm funny, I'm funny.
Is there any more ranch dip?
That's what you're going to do.
And then you're going to be sitting around somewhere, and you're going to say,
you know what?
This is pissing me off.
I'm going to write me a letter to the op-ed page.
Dear editor.
Wait, wait a minute.
Where's the noise?
Wait a minute.
Dear editor, as a show business professional of long standing,
I am outraged.
Of course, of course I'm outraged.
Outraged at the cost of my cable bill.
Wow.
And the weight for the installation.
This clip, I had done Bosom Buddies for two years with Peter Scaleri and the
gang.
And then in the year that I was barely employed in Hollywood, which is a tough
place to be barely
employed, I got a call and did this little shot.
All right, let's take a look here.
Tom Hanks, early work.
Are you ready to face oblivion?
I'm ready for you and him.
I did it so much for the great Arthur Fonzarelli.
How about that?
How about that?
What a shot, huh?
Oh, my God.
What a shot.
Oh.
Hey, can I get a selfie?
Yeah, no.
You know, Rita.
Wait a minute.
What is this?
Rita said -- Rita announced when they first came out that we will never ever
get -- have a selfie
stick in the house.
You can see it from a miniature golf course.
They sell these selfies all over Florence, which was the birthplace of the
Renaissance.
And, look, I realize that a huge amount of computer space is taken up with such
things.
Selfies of ourselves.
And I think, by and large, they can be pretty goofy.
But you got to -- oh, shoot.
Hold on.
Stop, tape, stop, tape, stop, tape.
They're back!
All right.
I got it.
But, look, Dave, just -- I'm just going to say, you can't see it, you in the
audience.
But look at the throw on this baby.
Come on.
Look at that.
And, look, I'm going to press this button.
There we are, Dave.
Now, can I give you -- we get it up above the chin, above the chin.
There we go.
How did you take it?
Right there?
Yeah, you press a -- you press a button, and out it comes.
Oh, wait a minute.
Oh, wait a minute.
Oh, there.
There it is.
There it is.
That's fantastic.
Look at that throw on that baby, Dave.
That's a beauty.
That's a beauty.
So, when you -- in a couple weeks, when you head down to -- I'm just going to
guess what you're
going to be up to, two words, space camp.
Um, take one of these bad boys with you.
You know what that is, Tom?
It gives the impression it's almost like someone else has just taken the
picture for you.
Which will work for you, Dave, because it will mean you've been on vacation
with a friend.
I don't know.
It just -- it doesn't need to be that insulting.
I'm just going with the screen persona.
You've established.
Oh, I see.
All right.
Take care of yourself, baby.
All right.

About three weeks ago, I got 12 crates of bumper st
