Can you feel it? Can you feel a little extra kind of jolt, a little extra buzz
in the air?
It's finally, of course, springtime. I am so sick and tired.
I have, finally, the glacier in my yard is beginning to recede a little bit.
And it leaves the moraine. Is that what it's left after a glacier recedes?
My yard has been ice-bound and snow-bound for like two months.
And, of course, here in New York City, the pleasant thing about it is
all of that beautiful, lovely, fluffy snow of the blizzard of the century,
Blizzardo Diablo, as you know.
Al Roker, remember that?
Al Roker here in New York City, he's like the NBC weatherman,
and he does the Weekend Today show, and he does local NBC News stuff,
but he's like the Willard-in-waiting, this Al Roker.
That's the official title, yes.
When Willard Scott finally goes nuts and they have to take him away,
and they have to incarcerate Willard for just, he's on a prolonged vacation, he's
resting,
he's fishing with Tom Brokaw.
When you hear that about Willard, you know that he's gone nuts.
Anyway, that's when Al Roker, who's a very nice, very friendly, very, we like
Al a great deal.
But anyway, during the big blizzard of '93, it was nonstop round-the-clock
coverage,
and along about three o'clock in the morning, Al had named the blizzard, like,
"Blizzardo Diablo."
And then there was some kind of spooky music that went with that.
"Blizzardo Diablo."
And I said, "What is he trying, is he trying to scare us with this?"
Yeah.
"Blizzardo Diablo."
Anyway, for that and other reasons, it's time once again, ladies and gentlemen,
to play "Let's Look for Swede."
"Let's Look for Swede."
"Let's Look for Swede."
"Yeah, we got it."
"Yeah, we got it."
Very simply, here's how this works. We turn on our external camera. I'll take
care of that right now.
Hal.
Yes, sir.
Hal Gurney, a racing legend and Emmy award-winning director.
Hal, do me a favor, turn on that external camera.
Turn it on, please.
All right.
There it is, ladies and gentlemen, New York City at dusk in all its glory.
This is 6th Avenue, looking right up the street there to Radio City Musical.
6th Avenue, or as it's known here in town, "Blizzardo Diablo."
"Avenue of the Americas."
And it looks like we may be getting a little missed.
Now we're looking south and heading toward Hurley's, the bar on the corner.
And in just a few minutes, people in the audience applauding places, you can
get drinks.
And in just a few minutes, we'll begin our search for Swedes, and when we find
a Swedish person, then we bring them up here and we talk to them.
We think.
We think.
We've never...
Wait a minute.
Let's go back and see if these young folks aren't from...
How do you do?
Good afternoon.
My name is...
My name is Dave Letterman.
May I have your name, please?
Barbara Rodinsky.
Barbara?
Renee Phillips.
I'm sorry, I didn't hear your name now.
Renee Phillips.
May Phillips and Barbara...
Renee.
Huh?
Renee.
Renee.
Right on.
Oh, my God.
And Rodinsky, is that a Swedish name, ma'am?
No.
Are you two women related?
Are you friends?
You have a...
Mother and daughter.
Oh, my goodness.
And which is which?
Oh, she's a mother.
I have quite a way with the gals.
And let me tell you something.
It gets me nowhere.
All right, Mom and daughter, what are you kids up to tonight?
What are you going to see a play?
Are you shopping?
What are you doing?
We don't know what we're going to do.
We're new in town.
Oh, where are you from?
Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh.
Have you just come in for the week, or have you moved here?
Just a couple days.
Uh-huh.
And where will you be staying while you're in town?
Oh, you better not tell us that.
No.
She's got a model.
Oh, God.
Oh, wait a minute.
Is she...
You know, we were thinking about letting Paul go and replacing him with a model.
Oh, God.
You could have really advanced your career a great deal, Nadine.
What?
Renee.
Renee, I'm sorry.
If you had said you were from Sweden, but you're not.
Yeah.
We're looking for Swedes tonight.
Oh, I'm sorry.
How about sweets?
Do you have any sweets?
You guys seem like a lot of fun.
Are you having fun so far?
Yeah, we are.
We love you.
Are you like best friends, mom and daughter?
Yeah, we are.
Well, that's good.
And is there a dad still in the picture?
He's somewhere in Pittsburgh.
He's back in Pittsburgh.
Yeah.
Having a warm six-pack of Iron City.
I'm seeing this.
Geez, you guys are so nice.
And, Mom, what was your name?
Barbara.
Barbara and Renee.
Yeah.
I'll tell you what.
You're not really Swedish, but you're awfully nice.
Go in there to Hurley's and tell them everything's on me and just kind of stay
there.
And if we don't find anybody from Sweden, you guys can come up and chat with us.
I'll tell you guys.
Okay, do yourselves a favor.
Watch out for that guy directly behind you.
You hear that?
You hear that?
The girl wants to be a model.
All right.
There they go.
Everything's on me.
Tell them everything's on.
How are you doing?
You know, Paul, we've played Let's Look for Swedes four times.
We've never found a Swedish person.
We've never found a Swedish person.
But we've made a lot of nice friends.
Oh, well, that's...
I like Mom and Renee.
I have a block about her name.
Renee and Mom is...
What did she say her name was?
Barbara and Renee.
Why can't I...
Here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to jot that down.
That's Barbara.
All right.
Okay.
So, don't be confused at home.
Yes.
Oh, yes.
We're still playing Let's Look for Swedes.
And, ladies and gentlemen, oh, this is the reason you got a nap this afternoon.
We're playing Let's Look for Swedes.
Here we are.
Now, this is, if you're just joining us, we have a mother and a daughter couple.
They're traveling from Pittsburgh.
And, as I understand it, one of the purposes of the trip is to get the daughter
a career
in modeling.
I believe.
And we have Barbara.
That's the mom.
Hi, Barbara.
How are you?
Barbara?
Oh, they...
Oh.
How dumb am I?
I'm, for some reason, I'm under the impression we're in the bar.
We're like several miles away using an infrared lens.
Barbara?
Barbara, is that you?
Yeah.
Hi, nice to see you.
And, of course, your lovely daughter, Renee.
Renee, how old did you say you were, by the way?
Uh, 16.
Oh.
Renee, do you have your driver's license?
Are you seriously considering a career in modeling?
Yes.
Are you still in high school?
Yes.
Well, by all means, you'd finish up high school, isn't that correct?
Yeah.
And then, wouldn't you maybe think about college as well?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Maybe.
How many times, Renee, during the day, have you thought to yourself, "Geez, I
wish I
was in Daytona Beach with my friends."
I don't know.
Well, you couldn't be a lovelier young woman.
Go ahead, kids.
Enjoy yourselves.
Are you having some of those beer nuts?
Wow, look at that.
Okay, so you have some...
Oh, shrimp.
Some of the...
By the way, that's the famous East River shrimp.
By all means, eat up and snack your brains out.
All right, girls.
We'll be chatting with you a bit later.
Thank you very much.
Go ahead, run up a huge bill.
Okay.
It's on me, and I ain't gonna be here that much longer, so...
I wonder if there's anything just to playing looking for models.
Let's look for models.
Yeah, now.
See, now you're talking about a sketch.
Let's look for Swedish models.
All right.
Let's go back into Hurley's if we can, Hal.
We've had a pretty good time so far.
Mary Tyler Moore was here, and she was lovely.
Barbara, do you and Renee like Mary Tyler Moore?
Yeah.
What are you drinking there, Barbara?
Champagne.
Thank you.
Champagne?
Okay.
Oh, boy.
Clams.
Clams.
I'm telling you, you don't get any better clams than you...
Thanks, Dave.
They're delicious.
All right.
Now, will you guys be able to come up a little later or not?
Sure.
Yes.
Okay.
Say hi to my wife, would you?
Oh, yeah.
I don't know who this guy is, but...
Not that keen on talking to this guy.
All right.
Well, have fun, kids.
We'll see you a little bit later.
Okay, Barbara, Renee, for playing Let's Look for Swedes.
We have a nice photo of Bjorn Borg for you.
Thank you very much.
Nice meeting you.
And good luck.
Have a lovely trip here in New York City.
My thanks...
My thanks also on the check.
Oh, yes.
Take this up to Mr. Right, will you?
My thanks to Jeff Altman, Gin Blossoms, and the lovely Mary Tyler Moore.
Good night, everybody!
