Thank you, gentlemen. Good to have you with us on the program again. How you
been?
Good, really good. Everything good? Yeah, good.
Explain this to me now. How did this come about?
I mean, I don't know what to say exactly. Why don't you tell us?
The Book of Mormon. First of all, you two are not Mormon.
No, but we know a lot about the Mormon religion.
Okay, well, there you go.
So tell us about, it's a musical, right?
Yeah, it's a musical. We were actually doing, I think it was the last time we
saw you,
we were doing Team America, and one of the producers said,
oh, they're doing Avenue Q, they're doing a puppet musical.
And so we went and saw Avenue Q and loved it,
and ended up hooking up with Bobby Lopez, who wrote music for that.
And we asked him, what do you want to do next?
And he said, I really want to do a musical about Joseph Smith.
And we're like, oh, we love that stuff.
And so it ended up becoming much more than just about Joseph Smith,
but we've been working on it for seven years.
Seven years. So when people go there, it's got to be funny, right?
Yeah, well, it's hopefully funnier than the real Book of Mormon, you know?
That's where they figured, you know?
Well, you got your work cut out for you.
Yeah, that's all.
We just had to get it funnier than the Book of Mormon itself.
I see.
So, but now, will Mormons go there and enjoy it as well?
I, at the first preview, afterwards, we had a little party,
and there were a couple of Mormons came up to me who were at the show.
Yeah.
And, you know, they walked up and said, you know, I'm a Mormon.
I was at your show.
And so my first was like, you know?
And I said, no, they really, they loved it.
And actually, we just got a review of sorts in the Salt Lake paper that said it
was sweet.
Sweet.
Yeah.
All of our, yes.
Which we, that's never really happened to us before.
We never get sweet.
What does that tell us about people who are Mormons, that they're open-minded
and accepting?
They're just super nice.
Uh-huh.
They're just crazy nice.
And that's why I was like, well, you got to make a musical about them.
Yeah.
Because they're so happy.
They always look like they're just about to break out in a song anyway, so.
They will.
That's the hardest part about doing a musical.
Okay, now I'm going to hold up some pictures because this is the day after the
Academy Awards.
And your show, a song, was nominated from the movie, right?
The South Park movie, yeah.
In the 2009 or something?
Yeah, the 80s or something.
Okay, so now, first of all, in the 80s, I'm close.
So here we have pictures of Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Now, you tell us what this represents to your history with the Academy Awards.
Well, when we got nominated, we kind of, we were like, oh, we don't want to go
to the Academy Awards.
And then we're like, well, how can we not go to the Academy Awards?
So we decided to go in dresses.
And so, I wore her dress and Matt wore her dress.
Right.
Now, I understand stuff like this.
And for a while, for like a 72-hour period, maybe not 72 hours, 36 hours, seems
like the greatest idea you've ever come up with.
And then later, like one afternoon, you think, am I not?
No, that afternoon, we actually planned it like a month before because we had
to get the dresses made and everything.
And then it was the day of, and we had a limo, and we had people doing our
makeup, and we're like, oh, let's not do this.
Yeah.
Let's not.
Huge mistake.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But then we just, we did some Charlie Sheening, and we were fine.
Yeah.
We just, we're just Sheening our heads off.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But at some point, everybody, I'm guessing, would say, oh, no, this is going to
be great.
This is going to be great.
This is going to be great.
Nobody said, eh, how about a second opinion, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, everybody said that to us.
We just didn't listen.
We were like, no, this is going to be great.
Oh, everybody.
Okay.
All right, so here we have the end result.
This is good.
There we are.
That's what happens if you take Charlie Sheen.
And you can, you can, you can tell that we're both Sheening pretty hard right
there.
Look at Trey's eyes.
That's the eyes of a Sheener.
I'm Sheening out right there.
And so you go in, and you sit through the whole Academy Awards.
Then what happens?
Then you lose to Phil Collins.
Uh-huh.
And there you are in your dresses.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You go home.
Yeah, you don't feel that cool.
Yeah.
Once the Sheen wears off, you're just.
Yeah, yeah.
So, yeah.
How many seasons has South Park, the TV show, been in production?
We're coming up on, this is our 15th season.
15 seasons.
Yeah.
And the question I get a lot, I guess everybody gets a lot, is, is it?
Is it fun?
Do you still enjoy it?
Is it fun?
It's not fun.
It's work.
You know, it's not fun to do.
But people think that we just go in Sheen all day long and come up with a show.
Right.
But it's real work.
That's what he does.
But no, we actually, we actually, it's, it's, you know, it's like hard to
complain about that
job.
Cause it's obviously we're really blessed to have it, but it's, it is work when
you're
doing it.
Having done it, we're really proud of what we've done.
How many do you do in a season?
We do like seven, two runs of seven.
So.
Yeah.
So we have 14 for the 15th season.
So when you, in the off season, you look back and you think, yeah, that turned
out pretty
well.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, we do.
But doing it, it's just, you know, not, it's not the fun.
Or we get in trouble or something.
The, uh, the Book of Mormon.
Here's what you want to think about.
Uh, March 24th.
Wait a minute.
I just, I think I just heard Eugene O'Neill turn over in his grave.
Yeah.
It's the Book of Mormon, March 24th at the Eugene O'Neill Theater.
Uh, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, uh, the co-creators.
Good to see you again.
Thank you.
Good luck with the production.
Thank you very much, Matt.
We'll be right back with the Zac Brown Band, everybody.
