Thank you very much.
How's your summer going, Andy?
It's been a little hectic. It's been fun.
I've been promoting the movie on the road.
They got you everywhere, huh?
All over, yeah.
You like that? You like traveling?
It gets old quick, doesn't it?
It gets old pretty fast.
The saving grace is the films on the plane.
I've been going to a lot of movies.
Yeah, that's a good way to keep current.
And it's good because, you know, Paramount's been flying us nice,
so you get the little personal movie system with a lot of movies on it.
And I started out, and it was like,
Disturbia, right at you.
And then right at the bottom, they've got Love Story.
Remember the old movie Love Story?
And I saw that, and I was like,
yeah, no way, I'm watching Love Story.
But I kept flying, and then I started running out of movies.
And just yesterday, I flew in, and I was on with my friends,
and they were like, so what are you going to watch?
I was like, Love Story.
They're like, oh, good luck. Don't cry.
I was like, yeah, right, like, I'm going to cry.
Love Story.
And then, you know, a few hours later,
they turn around and check in on me.
They're like, so how's it going?
I was just like, it's fine.
It's not anything.
It's just Love Story.
They're like, oh, dude, sorry.
I'm like, it's okay.
Love means never having to say you're sorry.
That's nice.
It's a good movie.
Congratulations.
You're nominated for an Emmy for a video that you did on Saturday Night Live.
That's right.
This is a Justin Kimberly.
Yeah.
What is the, this is where everybody's dancing around with their deal in a box,
right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Their deal.
What is, what was the genesis of this?
We, well, basically, we were slacking off, and Lorne told us, you know.
Lorne Michaels, the producer at SNL.
Of SNL, yeah.
He's like, you have to do a digital short this week.
Right.
So we wanted to do a song with Justin, because he's obviously very good at
singing.
And we knew we wanted to do something early 90s R&B.
Yeah.
But we didn't know what.
Right.
And we were tossing around ideas, and finally my friend Yorma was like, well,
what about that
thing where you, like, give someone a gift, but you cut a hole in it, and then
you put
your stuff in, and then, and we were like, all right, the old diner bit.
Yeah.
So we, we sort of wrote up some lyrics and brought it down to Justin, and we
were like,
so what do you think of this?
And before we were even done telling him, he was like, yes.
Oh, we have to do that.
So the only thing left was to tell Lorne, and we ran it by Lorne, and he was
like, well,
just remember, it's the Christmas episode, and there's going to be millions of
people watching,
and many of them will be children, so just use your best discretion.
Kind of fits right in with a Christmas theme of giving, though, doesn't it?
I think so, yeah.
It's, there's like a strange tradition with it now, like, I think people
actually started
doing it, and a guy came up to me on the street and was like.
That's awful.
Yeah, he's like, I gave my girlfriend my junket a box for Christmas, and I was
like, oh, gross.
And millions and millions of people saw this, on the internet, and all over the
way.
Yeah, yeah, it did big on the internet.
We have a little of it here, you want to take a look?
Yeah, let's take a look.
Can we see just a little bit of it here?
Of course, that's exactly what it is.
Did you, I think I know the answer to this, but I think you started performing
at any opportunity
when you were a kid, is that right?
Yeah.
Is that right, anywhere, anyplace?
I would perform in class more often than not.
I would get in a lot of trouble.
But my first actual performance, and my only actual theatrical thing I ever did,
was my
third grade play of Annie.
Oh.
And I basically had the same haircut then as I do now.
But I played Daddy Warbucks.
Oh, sure.
Yeah.
And there was sort of, there was a while we were talking about, you know, well,
what's
the look going to be, because he's got such a shag.
And so they tried putting on the bald cap, but I basically just looked like a
cone head.
So they just went with what I had.
And in this film, Hot Rod, you believe for a time that your father was a great
stuntman.
Yes.
And you want to emulate his success.
He has passed away, and you feel that that's your legacy.
You must follow in his footsteps.
Absolutely, yeah.
Yeah, but it turns out you're not really much of a stuntman at all, are you?
No.
Yeah.
Probably the worst ever.
Right.
Hilarious hijinks.
How can you go wrong with a bad stuntman?
Yeah.
And did you injure yourself at all during this?
I got banged up a little bit, you know, for anything that was, like, really,
really bad
news, we had to bring in the pros.
But I did, like, some really nice fight scenes with Ian McShane from Deadwood.
I don't know if you guys know him, but he's fantastic.
And, uh...
Squeaked it out.
Squeaked it out.
Audience hoping to win something.
Uh-huh.
I'll tell him.
I'll tell him you guys clapped.
You know what I saw over the weekend is a kid on a thing, and it's like a one
wheel in front,
one wheel in back, and the whole deal twists.
And I said, what is that?
And he said, it's a ripstick.
Are you familiar with that?
No.
Oh, this was crazy.
That's a great name.
It's just like a two-wheeled skateboard, and in addition to the wheels rotating
at will, it also pivots.
And does it rip your pants, or...?
Well, I think it dislocates your collarbone immediately.
Guaranteed.
Yeah.
Are you any good on stuff like that?
I'm terrible.
Kind of the irony of me doing this movie is that I was always terrible on
things with wheels, and all my friends were really good, like skateboarders and
BMXers, and I tried getting into skating once, and I ended up ripping my face
open in my room doing ollies on the carpet.
So, from that point on, I would just sort of go and hang out and, like, sort of
play the wall with my board.
Uh-huh.
That's good.
And, like, spray myself up with water and be like, whoa, killer skate sesh,
right, guys?
Oh, man, we are skateboarding all over.
And they were like, I don't know, man, your board looks pretty clean.
I'm like, oh, yeah, I just got it.
I thrashed my last one.
Anyways, you guys want to go walk somewhere, or...?
It is remarkable what kids, kids who are just kids, and then, of course,
professionals, it's remarkable what they can do with those things.
It's crazy.
It's just silly.
Let's take a look at a clip of the film, Andy.
Tell us what we're going to see.
This is my first time introducing a clip.
Oh.
Good for you.
Sorry.
I had to make a moment out of it.
Fine, why not?
I believe we're going to be seeing the opening scene of the film, which is a
stunt.
All right.
Andy Samberg.
Hot Rod opens on Friday.
What he had in mind.

Good luck with the film, Andy.
