How you doing?
I'm doing great.
You're on vacation, I understand.
And I can't thank you enough for taking some time out of your vacation
to come over here and spend the evening with us.
It's very nice of you.
It's my pleasure, Dave.
What are you doing on vacation?
How does that work?
What do you have?
Well, basically, it's just I don't get much time off.
And we decided finally that we were going to go and just do some stuff for Kels
and the family.
And when you say we, who are you talking about?
My daughter and my fiance.
How old is your daughter?
She's almost 12.
12 years old.
Now, what is it like being a 12-year-old, your daughter,
and her father's like Mr. Big Shot TV guy.
Is that a good thing for her or is it not a good thing?
I don't know.
She's very, very conscious about cash and stuff, though, which I think is very
good.
She says, oh, no, that's too expensive, Daddy.
We don't need to buy that.
Wow.
Which is the only person in my life that does say stuff like that.
That's kind of a nice, you know, centered quality about her.
All right, so you're here with your daughter and your fiance.
And what's her name?
Tammy.
Oh, Tammy.
Tammy with an I.
Tammy with an I, of course.
Uh, are you getting married soon?
Uh, no.
No.
This is an interesting thing.
All right, explain this.
How long have you and Tammy known one another?
I'm going to run this one for a little bit.
Tammy and I have known each other now for two years.
We were engaged a year ago.
We met in a bar.
Mm-hmm.
Don't most people actually meet in a bar, really, when you think about it?
It's either church or a bar.
Yeah.
I guess bar is more of my style.
But, uh...
Anyway, it was the first night after...
It was the second night after I had filed for divorce against my second wife.
And, uh, my friends, uh, said, Kelsey, you can't just sit here and, you know,
just, uh, rot.
So, you got to get out.
And they took me down to this place in, uh, I guess it's Manhattan Beach or
Hermosa Beach.
Oh, yeah.
You know, one of the beach, beach things.
Southern California.
Beautiful area.
And, uh, a place called Harry O's, the first time we'd ever been there, either
of us.
And, uh, we stared at each other for about an hour.
And, uh, this voice came to me and said, uh, you don't have a hair on your ass
if you don't talk to her.
Oh, that's weird.
It's a voice, like...
This was like the voice of God.
Somebody on the PA system, or...?
But I don't see...
That's not an expression I would normally use.
That's, uh...
That's not one of mine.
And so, uh, I thought, well, geez, I'd better do it.
Yeah.
What does she do?
What are the woman's interests?
She's into, uh, nutrition, basically.
Which helps.
Yeah.
Professionally, she's a nutritionist?
Oh, that's good.
Yeah.
And then, and so two years now.
And so, when is the date?
Well, we think probably another two years.
Another two years, yeah.
Yeah.
But the real reason is because, uh, I wasn't ready to get married the first two
times I did.
And, uh, that became painfully.
How long did the first one last?
The first one was about nine months.
Nine months.
Wow.
Yeah.
Second one?
Second one?
About nine months.
Maybe you should stay in the house.
So I think this long engagement...
I think this long engagement thing's a good idea for me.
Yeah, I know.
I think so.
Wow.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, well, good for you.
I hope things work out well for you because it is a little daunting now because,
you know,
you're looking back at two that went down in flames.
Yeah.
And so you're thinking, well, I don't know.
You, you want this one to go on forever then, don't you?
Absolutely.
I want this one to work out.
And so I have to make sure I'm, I'm right for it.
Uh-huh.
That's good.
Well, I hope it does turn out nicely.
Hey, hey, is she here tonight?
Yes, she is.
Would the two of you like to go touch some meat?
Oh, I know.
We'd love them.
All right.
Congratulations.
Congratulations.
Your show, once again, nominated for a huge sum of Emmys, like 10 Emmys or
something.
Yeah.
I think we might have been nominated for 11.
There was some sort of tie thing.
But, yeah, that's very impressive.
Now, you've won Emmys in the past yourself, haven't you?
Just last year, I won one.
It's my first time.
Are you excited about the prospect of winning another one?
It's a long day out there in Pasadena.
It is, isn't it?
It's an awfully long day.
I'll never forget what you said last year when, uh, who was it?
Oh, God, I forget her name.
You forgot?
The one of, yeah.
No, I forgot the name, but he said, this city has heart.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, Pasadena?
It fade out of way.
Oh, there you go, yeah.
That's right.
I forgot it as well.
Anyway, if you win, what do you say?
Are you going to go?
I'll say, uh, thanks.
Yeah, that's all you can say.
Yeah, I think so.
I would love to win two of them.
That'd be kind of neat.
I think David Hyde-Pierce will win this year.
You know, he was here a couple of weeks ago.
He's a very funny guy.
He's great.
Yeah.
Yeah, he's great.
How did you get along with, speaking of cast members,
how did you get along with Shelley Long?
What was that like?
It was like a brother and sister.
She drove you nuts?
Just like this.
Did you get on your nerves?
Well, that's what brothers and sisters do, don't they?
How long did you work with her?
Three years?
I see.
For some reason, I'm thinking that it was much, much longer.
Yeah.
Well, I guess I was, too.
Yeah.
It wasn't so bad, you know.
Have you either for the part you play on the television show or for personal
reasons ever
been sought counseling, psychiatric counseling?
Oh, yeah, I do that all the time.
What is that like for you?
It's very gut-wrenching and painful.
Does it do you any good?
It's probably not a bit, no.
It's helped me a lot, actually, yeah.
I've done it on occasion, you know, when you just think, well, I got nobody to
talk to.
I have no friends.
So you, so, oh, thank you very much.
All right, well, let's ride home together, see what happens.
And you go in there, the first, your first visit, you're always, oh, man, I'm
loaded for
bear.
And boom, everything, you get everything right off your chest.
All right, so you come back a week later, and it's a little kind of, by the
third visit,
you're just bored silly with your own problems, you know?
So you start, you know, you feel like you feel a responsibility to make it
entertaining
for the guy.
Well, that's true.
You do feel that.
So you get to start making stuff up.
I always, I always drive down the road on my way to the session trying to think
of
what's wrong.
That's right, yeah.
But, you know, what's really hurting me today?
Yeah, yeah, not much, really.
It depends on the mood, yeah.
And after one session, I pretty much think to myself on the way to the parking
lot, I'm
cured.
Now, is Tammy here?
You want to go over and touch me?
Yeah, yeah.
Do you mind if we bring her?
I don't want to embarrass her.
I'd love to bring her.
Is she back there?
There she is, ladies and gentlemen.
Here's my bae.
How do you do?
How do you do?
Of course, no, Kelsey.
All right.
All right.
Cool.
Why don't you kids go right over to the deli?
Okay.
All right.
There you go.
Be careful.
Thank you, Kelsey.
All right, let's go back over to Rupert's.
I understand Kelsey Grammer is there with his fiancée.
All right, Kelsey, you and Tammy, now I want to remind you, in some states,
once you've touched
the meat, the meat, the meat, you are married.
Hey.
I mean, spiritually, yeah.
And the father, of course, looking on.
All right, pick out some meat and touch it.
Here we go.
Kelsey Grammer and his fiancée, Tammy, are touching.
What are you going to touch there?
I'm going to touch the liverwurst.
All right, the liverwurst.
Personal favorites.
Here they go.
All right.
Yeah, well, okay.
That's nice.
I like that.
Possibly the biggest star on television today.
He's over there touching meat.
All right.
