My next guest became popular in this country after starring in a motion picture
called The Harder They Come.
He is now one of the world's most well-respected reggae musicians, and right
here is a copy of his newest album.
It's called Cliffhanger, and I believe with the group also tonight, Chyna Smith,
do we got over there?
Yes, sir. All right, please welcome Jimmy Cliff.
Oh, so sweet, so sweet.
Oh, knock me out, my dear.
Yeah, yeah.
Ow!
Yeah.
I woke up this morning, turned on my radio.
They were playing that song with the island beach.
The DJ said, here's one for lovers, and the name of the song is American Sweet.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. It's American Sweet to the reggae beat.
Oh, oh, oh, oh. It's American Sweet to the reggae beat.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's American Sweet.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, it's American Sweet to the reggae beat.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's American Sweet to the reggae beat.
Oh, it's American sweet, it's a reggae beat. Oh, it's American sweet, it's a
reggae beat. Yeah.
She can rock it now, rub-a-dub it now, she can rock it now, rub-a-dub it now.
Whenever I call her on the telephone, she say, Jimmy, man, when you're coming
home. This is what she say when you hear my music, yeah. I'm missing you, so
won't you come home soon?
Oh, it's American sweet, it's a reggae beat. Oh, it's American sweet, it's a
reggae beat. Yeah.
Oh, it's American sweet, it's a reggae beat. Yeah.
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Very nice, very nice. Thank you gentlemen.
Yeah, Jimmy. Yes, sir.
Now we're getting somewhere. That's terrific, that sounds great. Thank you.
Thanks for being here. Yeah, it's great. You're just in a, we mentioned the
first film, and now you're in another movie, right? Yeah, it's called Club
Paradise. And was that the name? I thought you saw a different name. I guess
you would know, wouldn't you? The new one is called Club Paradise. Yeah, okay.
And what part do you play in that? That's the one with Robin Williams. Robin
Williams, Peter Atul, Twiggy, Rick Morantz, and
Well, I play a part of, I play the owner of the club, and it's like a club that's
not run on a high class level. It's very loose. Casual. Casual.
So, uh... Why would it be so casual, do you suppose? Because I'm casual.
And, and, and Jimmy, what makes you a casual guy?
I'm just casual. Uh-huh, yeah.
Uh, was it fun working with those people?
Uh, great fun. I had great fun. Yeah.
You got to shoot it in your, pretty much your own backyard, didn't you?
Yeah. Uh, we shoot in the, you know, the lush part of Jamaica, the part that
still maintains the natural part of Jamaica.
Yeah, yeah. So when, the film's out soon, isn't it?
It should be out, um, spring to summer of next year, 86.
I hope that's a big hit for you. And you're, you're on tour right now. You're
just finishing up, aren't you?
Finishing up right now, yes.
Yeah. Where, where is the last date on the tour?
Uh, Connecticut.
And what city?
Um, what city again is it, Victor? I don't remember.
Uh, New Haven.
New Haven, right.
All right, good.
Um, Jimmy, geez, it's a pleasure to meet you. You sound terrific.
Thank you very much. Come back again.
So, uh, we got to do a commercial, but we'll be right back, folks.
All right. Thank you very much. Jimmy, thanks again for being here.
Thank you.
Uh, I want to thank everybody who was here with us tonight, especially the
studio audience,
and I'd like to invite you back tomorrow.
Uh, we'll see you tomorrow night. Lily Tomlin and Sting will be here. Good
night, folks.
