before we sit down before we sit down we're going to ex maybe we may not do it
but we might
explode some myths here on the david letterman show uh first of all dave come
and sit over here
next to me now dave and i i mean i'm quite a bit heavier than dave obviously
but dave and i are
pretty much the same height wouldn't you say a little taller you think you're
taller
well you also have hair so that may account for some of the time all right now
that doesn't necessarily
mean we're going to be the same size sitting down but let's just see for the
sake of our
let's see how we are sitting down let's just sit down together handsome couple
though yeah we are
quite all right now sitting down sitting down here we are you know pretty
pretty much the same size
wouldn't you say right okay now dave yes dave if you would please take your
position behind the desk
in your regular seat sure could i could i get a hot towel please before
let's just see what happens this will prove something you believe well i don't
know i don't know
oh no no no he's slumping i want you to sit up straight what's the matter sit
up straight
look there you go right it's pretty much the same
that's awesome i rest my case i rest my
you're saying that i i'm not saying anything but this what you're saying is you're
suggesting that this
chair is perhaps a little higher than that i'm suggesting that the host is
sitting a little bit
higher than his guest in a somewhat superior position oh but if it's but so
what no
exactly don't you think it's your show that's the way it ought to be i guess so
it's your show
it was my show i'd be up in the up in the flies there looking down on my guests
how you doing i'm
doing good and one other thing yeah one other thing you know this is a show we're
on television
right but we're also real people exactly and but we don't know how real we are
let's just check and
we'll see how real i have actual money and credit cards on me which i carry
around which makes it
you know a real person walks around with money right dave what's in your
pockets let's just see if he's
a real person well you know the difference is i of course live in new york
so i would be empty is this something that happened on the way here or no but
it's just a choice for
when you leave it's no but i mean why you know what i'm saying because exactly
there's no really
like like what i'm gonna buy drinks for people out here tonight or something
uh okay now to dispel some myths now now back to how you doing congratulations
every time we see you
uh it's because not because purely but you you've turned out another great
piece of work as a film
thank you thank you and this is when harry met sally billy crystal was here
last week and people love
this film and it's very exciting for you it is very exciting it's also was a
thrill to work with
billy because we're you know very good friends best friends and where did you
become friends he was
cast strangely enough as my best friend on all in the family oh that's right
yeah in the show and i
just you know figured well i'll go along with it yeah i don't really like him i
don't like him that much
but it was fast so i had to do it yeah but you know the show's over oh you mean
in other words i
could just drop the friendship yeah let me see maybe no no we really are
grateful we hit it off right
away do you and your families hang around together yes we do yeah we do we
spend a lot of time together
we barbecue together we do all those those things yeah and and in this film he's
uh roughly playing a
version of your life or is it closer than drop an extension of what i went
through when i was uh
freshly divorced and uh thrown back into the dating world and making a complete
and utter mess of my
social life how did that make you feel when you're watching him be you and and
you're in essence
telling him what to do well he he made it his own i mean it's you know it's it's
the character's not
totally me billy took it and made it his own and and did a great job i mean the
characters i haven't
seen it yet it's a he's got a dark side to him and he's a little rough around
the edges and billy
found a way to keep that and also make them accessible and likable and very
warm yeah now
this thing has uh i understand this afternoon we're discussing this oh we got
time here no
okay no i'll we'll save this for a second and then i'll go upstairs and get
some money
then we'll be back here with uh rob reiner i don't know the kids wanted to
start their own band
and they've been driving us crazy every night Bernadette all right so you uh
you just got
married actually yes i did i got married uh just about two months ago and uh so
far so good oh good
who is the woman you married i don't know no no her name is michelle singer and
she's a photographer
and we met during the making of the film and uh the film if you haven't seen it
is about how people meet
and fall in love and how they find each other and uh our story is could be one
of the stories in the
film because we not only do we have billy and meg's story about how they meet
and fall in love but we
have a number of older couples uh used in documentary style showing how they
met and fell in love and
uh the uh the cameraman barry sonnenfeld when we were doing pre-production in
los angeles says to me
um i was bemoaning my fate of not having a woman and not you know being with
anybody and he says uh
uh there's a person i know in in new york her name is michelle singer and you're
gonna marry her
and i said yes and i said get out of here you're nuts and uh we're in the
middle of shooting and
she comes one day to the set to to meet uh barry for lunch and i looked at her
and i and i was
immediately smitten as they say that's great but you know i'm wondering here
now they cast billy
crystal as your best friend yes this guy tells you you're gonna marry this will
you be highly
suggestible yeah it could be you have any you have anything you want me to do dave
i'm not saying a
word you're very sleepy i'll do something what do you want me to do and then
you uh went to where
where did you go to get married uh we were in hawaii we were in hawaii and uh
actually we weren't we
didn't go there to get married we went there just to to go on a vacation and it
was so romantic
that we decided to do it there and it was very strange because uh because we
didn't know what
to do i mean we got all filled with emotion and and and and romance and uh we
didn't know what to do
we you know you have to get witnesses who are the witnesses going to be and
just when we're talking
about this this older lady uh uh drives up in this little motorized cart and
she looks at me she says
the princess bride was a delight from start to finish i said you want to be a
witness to a wedding
sure great so she brought a friend of hers along from liverpool and we got
married on the beach
and it sounds like it might have been pauline kale driving a little car
um and you're you have another you have another filmmaker in the family is that
right you have
a younger brother i didn't realize there was another my brother my brother is
making his first
film called spirit of 76 how old a kid do we got here we've got a we got a 29
year old there you go
yeah see i'm a thing i'm assuming it's like a 17 18 year old yeah no no he's he's
13 years younger
than me and it's his first film he wrote it and i'm going to play a little part
in it a major theatrical
release i hope so it's francis coppola started a new company uh and it's called
commercial pictures
and they're films for like a million dollars and less it's like the old roger corman
the way roger
corman used to do and he's hopefully giving a chance for young filmmakers to to
get a shot and what is
the part you play in this film i play it takes place in the 70s the satire of
the 70s and uh
i play a werner erhart s teacher dr cash and it's it's it's gonna be fun now
you uh your father
yourself and your your brother everybody makes films now everybody in the
family makes films is there a
possibility of working together on the same project i know my father's also
plays a part in the film as
well yeah but yeah it would be great to find us find a project for the three of
us great this this
film is doing great isn't it it was kind of surprise yeah so far it's doing
very well yeah in this summer
this is the most loaded summer oh yeah in the history of the movie sure i mean
it's wild i mean
with ghostbusters and batman and indiana jones you know i i have a touch of batmania
do you really
as a matter of fact really i've seen it seven times have you like that batmobile
do you yes i do
uh and what else are you doing this summer uh this summer uh we're finishing we're
also our company
i'm in with a castle rock and we're also uh doing another remake of lord of the
flies and we're in
post-production on that so i'm working on that as well great anytime you want
to come back here i'll do
i'll do my damnedest good to see you again and we'll check yeah we'll measure
something rob reiner and uh
we'll be right back
