Okay, y'all, it's time to sing our song, yeah, do it with the feeling, yeah,
come on!
Ain't no stopping us now, we're on the boat, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ain't no stopping us now, we've got a group, come on!
There have been so many things that have held us down, but now it looks like
things are finally coming around, yeah
I know we've got a long, long way to go, and where we'll end up, I don't know
But we won't let nothing hold us back, we're gonna get ourselves together, we're
gonna polish up our act, yeah
And if you've ever been to hell now before, I know that you refuse to be held
down anymore, yeah, yeah
Don't you let nothing, nothing, nothing stand in your way, and all your love,
yeah
Watch out for your time, please, that's right
To every word I say, every word I say about it
Ain't no stopping us now, we're on the boat, we've got a group
Ain't no stopping us now, we've got a group
I know you know someone who's got a negative vibe, whoo
If you're trying to make it, they only push you aside, shut up
They really don't have nowhere to go, ask them where they're going, they don't
know
But we won't let nothing hold us back, we're gonna get ourselves together, we're
gonna polish up our act, yeah
And if you've ever been to hell now before, I know that you refuse to be held
down anymore, yeah
Don't you let nothing, nothing, nothing stand in your way, yeah
I want you all to listen, listen, to every word I say, every word I say about
it
Ain't no stopping us now, we're on the boat, nothing gonna, nothing gonna stop
us now, stop us now
Ain't no stopping us now, we've got a group

Yeah, Luther Vandross
Thank you, folks. Nice to see you guys. Thank you very much. How are ya? Luther,
welcome to the program. Luther Vandross, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you very much. How are you doing? How are you doing? How are you doing?
That was great. Thank you very much for the terrific song. Now, do you know all
of these folks back here?
Yeah, I know everyone. As a matter of fact, I know your band.
Oh, everybody knows our band. Yeah.
Ask, ask Paul how his Thanksgiving was. No, forget it.
But now, Luther, when you, when you go out, when you're working, when you're
out doing it for real, do you take everybody with you?
Oh, yes. That's why I come home with, uh, 12 cents.
Are you folks, are you well paid?
Yeah. They'll have houses bigger than mine.
What else can they say, of course?
Is this the first time you've worked in the Ed Sullivan Theater?
You know, uh, it is. It's not the first time I've been here because I've done
interviews in here before, but it's the first time actually performing here and
it's lovely.
When you were a kid, did you ever watch the...
Here are some folks who helped with the painting. Thank you very much. Nice job.
Uh, when you were a kid, did that show mean anything to you? Was that a...
Oh, let me tell you my little story, my little Ed Sullivan story.
Okay.
Once my mother had said to me, she said, "Um, I'm going out. When I, when I
come back, I want you to make your bed. I want you to, uh, do your homework."
I didn't do either thing. This was a Friday.
Sunday, at about five minutes to eight, I turned on the TV. The Supremes were
coming on that phone.
After goofing off all weekend.
Oh, all week. The whole, the whole time. And, uh, she just went over to, to me
as I was getting ready to watch The Supremes on Ed Sullivan.
The Supremes and Temptations. So this was a big night. And she says, "What are
you doing?"
I said, "I'm getting ready to watch The Supremes and The Temptations on Ed
Sullivan."
She says, "Turn it off." I said, "Wait, Ma, look, you know, the punishment's
got to fit the crime."
I didn't murder anybody. I just didn't watch The Supremes. I said, "I got to
see The Supremes."
So that's the way she used to be able to control me through the music. You know,
cause I didn't care.
"You can't go to basketball practice." "Oh, okay."
Did you, did you, uh, like a lot of folks, uh, ever work in commercials, jingles,
that kind of stuff?
Oh, absolutely. We, uh, that's how I got started. Will Lee and I used to sing jingles
together.
Will Lee does every commercial presently on the radio in the free world.
Yeah, but we had a great time doing that. I made a career.
What kind of stuff were you doing?
I did Juicy Fruit and Pepsi Cola and...
Anything we can hear? Uh...
Knock us out with a little something here. A little Pepsi.
Um, you're the Pepsi generation.
With the feel of a brand new day.
And with every single thing that's new.
Well, the Pepsi spirit shines right through.
Yeah!
Let's go!
Lee's there!
We'll be right back, folks.
We'll be right back.
