Norm Macdonald on Broadcast Minds 2014 - Hosted by Tom Green w/ Criss Angel and Cali Lewis

Music.
Music.
We have to use a lot of different types of cameras and different inputs,
outputs.
Integrate different camera formats when we're mixing broadcast cameras with
standard definition feeds and laptop feeds.
We can mix that all together in the TriCaster.
Add instant replay, add opportunities for sponsorship.
We are competing for eyeballs against TV, so production quality is extremely
important.
Very portable and more importantly, especially for me, user friendly.
To have replay, to have graphics, to make it look like a television quality
broadcast, it's the way sports are supposed to be watched.
We've got flexibility with our multi-camera replays, our ethical graphics and
our multi-camera production.
We can have an interview happening inside the front studio, a band recording in
the middle studio.
We have a green screen that we can do interviews on as well.
And it all comes together inside of the TriCaster.
Any event is really about producing content to engage the consumer in a
different way.
For you to be able to do HD through the internet and add social media is a
brilliant package that makes it a better experience for the consumer than it
does just in traditional television.
We have seen an upturning subscription numbers on our online video content of
about 25% due to what we can achieve now.
While I'm punching the show, I've got highlights posted right on our YouTube,
our Twitter, Facebook before the game's even over.
With the advent of social media, Facebook, MySpace, there's a ready pool of
communities and consumers who can be marketed to.
Not only did new tech allow us to become a great product in quality, but it
allowed us to become more of a global brand.
Find your superpowers.
For 30 years, New Tech's been giving anyone superpowers to create network style
television and webcasts.
And we're very excited to have you guys here for Broadcast Minds 2014.
It's very cool because the definition of what it means to be a broadcaster is
so rapidly changing.
And the panel that we've put together for you today are the big thinkers and
innovators that are actually pushing the limit on what that means.
So I'd like to start off by introducing our first panelist.
Starting in a spare bedroom in her house, Callie Lewis has built a multimedia
empire which will soon reside in a multi-million dollar facility in Dallas,
Texas.
She's one of the first females in tech broadcasting.
She's a correspondent for everyone from CNN, BBC to Fox.
And she has over two and a half million followers in social media.
And the most exciting statistic about Callie Lewis is that her videos have been
viewed over a billion times.
So I'd like to join me in welcoming Callie Lewis.
Our next member of the Broadcast Minds panel is the biggest name in magic on
the planet.
His television show Mind Freak is still viewed by over 100 million viewers
every season in over 90 countries.
His magic products are available in over 50,000 retail stores.
And he's the star of Criss Angel's Believe at the Luxor.
And he is the most watched magician on the internet.
And one clip, Walk on Water, has over 50 million views.
So join me in welcoming Mr. Criss Angel.
All right, our next panelist for Broadcast Minds began his career in stand-up
comedy.
And his early writing work for Roseanne and Dennis Miller opened the door for
him to join the cast of Saturday Night Live,
where he was the anchor of the Weekend Update with his trademark line, Now the
Fake News.
You can catch him on the Video Podcast Network's Norm McDonald Live.
Help me welcome the incomparable Norm McDonald.
And now for the moderator.
Tom Green is one of the most unpredictable comedians on the earth.
He was the host of the Tom Green Show on MTV, and he's a pioneer of internet
television,
doing a live daily show from the comfort of his own living room, Tom Green's
House Tonight.
And he's also the host of the current show on AXS TV, Tom Green Live.
And recently he's released one of the finest beers to ever come out of Canada.
Tom Green Beer, the most consistent branding man in television, Tom Green.
Yeah!
Hey!
How are you, Norm?
Of course I'm here.
How are you?
Chris?
Hey, how's everyone doing?
Welcome to the Broadcast Minds panel.
You guys ready to have a good time tonight?
Yeah!
Oh, no, it's morning.
It's morning.
It's morning now, is it?
Morning.
What a good night.
The night hasn't ended yet.
We've been partying it up all night.
Right, guys?
True.
Yeah.
This is…
I'll tell you some of the crazy girls.
That's truth in advertising.
Oh, yeah.
So this is exciting.
We're going to have a conversation here today about television and broadcasting.
And what's exciting about this is everybody here has taken their passion in
life and turned
it into something amazing.
And, you know, Chris, I mean, you are the most watched magician in history, the
most watched
magician on the internet in history and on television.
Well, what's the trick to getting…
What's the trick to getting those kind of views?
Well, I think it's all about content.
As you know from your success, it's about creating a moment that people are
engaged to.
And I think that I've been very blessed to understand, I think, the day and age
that
we live and how rapidly it changes, how to keep magic relevant.
Whereas magic for a period of time kind of was stale and it wasn't pop culture.
And for me, with my art, I try to keep it engaging pop culture relevant and try
to do things that
doesn't feel kind of old school.
It might be old school, but it's packaged in a new way.
And I think, you know, with the internet and what's going on with social media,
you know,
it's got to be something now that people haven't seen or that they want to show.
It has to be short, it has to be exciting, and it has to hold the attention of
the public,
which is very fickle by and large.
You know, 10, 20 years ago, you could have one camera shoot something and
people would
want it to see one continuous shot of something.
That doesn't work.
Kids today are like, you know, overwhelmed with information.
They have a short attention span.
So it's got to be packaged in a way where it's short, concise, and is engaging.
And I think I've found that formula, but it's always changing.
So it's interesting to remain relevant by understanding what people, how they
process
information now.
Yeah, and we've all built our own little television studios as well, right?
Yes.
All four of us have built our own little television studios using, you know,
consumer
electronics, new technology.
TriCaster.
Norm, you're doing the video podcast network and the Norm MacDonald live show
using a TriCaster.
Callie, you have a TriCaster.
You have a TriCaster.
Is it more fun doing it on your own, producing the show yourself?
Your new podcast is completely independent, or do you prefer broadcast
television?
No, I prefer narrow casting because, you know, when I first came to Hollywood,
I met Richard
Pryor.
And I remember he said this thing, he was like, because I said, everybody loves
you, you know?
And he's like, I can't do Richard Pryor.
But he's like, no, they don't.
Yeah.
I'm doing Cosby.
He said, no, they don't.
He goes, what?
He goes, only one in ten people even know me, and only one in a hundred like me.
Uh-huh.
He goes, but that's enough.
Uh-huh.
You know, because it's, and I thought about, yeah, it's like three million
people, you know?
And so that's what's cool about, like, you having your own narrow casting thing
is that
they only tune in for you, you know?
So if I go on Letterman, they're going to see Letterman, you know?
They're tuning in to see Letterman.
I'm the guest, they might like me, they might not like me.
You know?
I don't know about that.
Everybody likes you, right?
Everybody likes me.
But when you were, you know, when you were making Saturday Night Live, when you
were on
Saturday Night Live, there was all this preparation, writers and all sorts of
people involved,
executive producers, and now you can just do it all yourself.
Is that process more fun of making the show more fun?
I like doing everything myself because I'm, like you, a stand-up, so we started
completely
independent, you know, and completely responsible for bombing or doing well,
you know?
Yeah.
And so that's how we start.
We grew up in stand-up, so it was funny, you know, what Chris was telling me.
I just read a book from when I was a kid called Future Shock by Alvin Toffler,
but that's
what he talks about.
It's an amazing book, but he says, like, in the future, which is now, that
people that
don't understand technology will become obsolete.
Uh-huh.
And they'll get Future Shock.
Yeah.
We're almost there.
Yeah, we're there.
Callie, you --
Callie has an -- and he said they'll have an enormous amount of product.
And that's what I was just talking to Callie backstage.
She has so much product, it's unbelievable.
Review units, gadgets, technology.
But hours, like hundreds of hours.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
I've been doing it for about eight years.
So you -- and you've now built a large facility in Dallas.
Yeah, as Philip said, we started out really in a bedroom and a house, like a
lot of YouTubers
or online content people.
But we've been able to grow over the years.
First, we went into a 4,000-square-foot studio that we leased.
Now, we've bought a building that we can really customize, make it state-of-the-art
technology.
A lot of buildings.
It's gonna be geek heaven.
Bought a building.
That's pretty cool.
I know.
It's exciting.
You've built a whole web streaming facility also, Chris.
I created a 60,000-square-foot complex which houses a broadcast studio,
including fabrication shops, to create the content, the props, the scenic
design,
all the elements, so that I'm kind of a one-stop shop.
So any kind of dream I have, I don't have to go to anybody, rely on anybody.
And I think that is the future now.
And I think, you know, with technology and specifically for me, the TriCaster,
I'm not saying that to, you know, give a blatant plug, but it has been an
amazing tool to be able to do everything yourself and look like you spent
millions of dollars.
In my case, unfortunately I did.
But you don't have to.
That's the point.
Yeah.
One man can do it or you can have a team that can, you know, make it even
better with just that one box, which is brilliant.
My kid, you know, my kid, I was, when I was a kid, I wanted to be a sports, I
grew up in Canada with you.
I wanted to be a sportscaster, do hockey.
But you know what my kid does?
He's only 10.
He does a podcast.
Nobody listens to it.
But he does it because he loves PTI, so he does like a sports podcast.
And he'll do, so he'll have that, you know, that Malcolm Gladwell thing where
you, if you do 100,000 hours, you're an expert.
Uh-huh.
He's doing like, you know, 20 hours a week.
Like nobody's listening to it.
Yeah.
But he's getting better and better.
Like it's amazing.
I would have loved that when I was a kid.
Wouldn't you have loved that?
Oh, yeah.
Absolutely, yeah.
Who are some of the guests that you have coming up in the new season of Norm
MacDonald Live?
Oh, we got the great Fred Willard.
We got Larry King.
We got Ray Romano, the great Ray Romano.
Hey, we had Mickey Rooney booked, but we would have been the last guys.
Was he really?
He was booked to come up?
Yeah, he was booked for the next week.
Yeah?
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
I didn't mean to bring everybody down.
He had a good life, you know?
Yeah.
Sure.
Is there stuff that you can talk about on the show?
Did this conversation go off in crazy directions that you wouldn't take it?
Well, you know, the interesting thing is like when you have no notes from censors
or anything.
So the first shows were like, you know, practically pornographic.
Yeah.
Like you just say anything that comes to your mind.
Right.
So you have to censor yourself like.
You have to decide who your audience you want to be.
Yes, yes.
If they are and where you want to go with it.
Exactly.
And then you have freedom.
But you have to, yeah, you have to s
