Norm Macdonald on The Dennis Miller Show w/ Jason Sudeikis (2011) Full Interview w/ video

Hello everybody and welcome.
...with Aerosmith, Sybilis, Sybilis, test one, two.
Joining me in the studio, live from SNL, Jason Sudeikis, and lovely Norm Macdonald
with a
Milwaukee Brewer hat that I haven't seen anybody wear since Harvey's Wallbangers,
Cecil
Cooper et al, in Milwaukee in the mid-70s.
This segment brought to you by Google a Day, the popular new trivia game where
the questions
are so tough, you're actually encouraged to find the answers using Google.
See if you can solve today's question.
Visit Googleaday.com.
Jason, Norman, welcome to the show, my friend.
Good to be here.
The object of the game is to cheat by looking at a computer.
Exactly.
It's a Google thing.
You see, they've made the questions so intricate, there's no way for anybody to
know them and
therefore they have to use Google.
So they have to go to the next level.
You know, Zuckerberg says he's only eating his own meat that he kills now.
Have you read that?
With his bare hands.
Yeah.
Zuckerberg?
He's a monster.
He tries to do one thing to alter his modern lifestyle every year and this year
he says
he's only going to eat meat that he's actually killed.
And I was wondering what are you adhering to?
I'm a vegetarian.
A strict vegetarian.
No.
Have you done that?
Well, I eat chicken.
Well, it's not all that.
That's not vegetarian.
I said I'm not strict.
I eat chicken and beef.
I eat raw game.
Did you ever eat chicken?
Or I ate raw game?
Did you ever eat chicken?
It's not dead yet.
No.
No.
You're over there.
And you eat it, and as you're eating it, their death throes are making you hungrier.
There's nothing.
That's better than a soybean.
Yeah, you're right.
Master.
Which sounds better?
That or soybean?
Listen, some of the best meals I've had is that Mongolian thing over at Dahmer's
on Wednesday
night.
Literally, we ate a Mongolian.
Did I tell you I ate a live fish in real life?
No.
No.
I was at a sushi restaurant, and the guy's like Japanese, and so I go, "I eat
just sashimi,
like raw fish.
I don't eat with rice or anything like that."
Yeah.
Am I trying to impress him?
So he goes, "You eat live fish?"
I go, "Yeah."
Even though I don't.
Never think he's going to call you on it.
Yeah.
Plus, it sounds kind of cool, and he goes, "I get you live fish."
I go, "Thanks, man."
Like I was an inside guy, and then he brought out a fish.
And hit it, and knocked it out, and put it on a stick.
It was live.
And that clears out a sushi bar in the house.
A lot of people, the girl I was in was barfing in a bathroom.
And the only people interested was the guy, the Japanese sociopath guy, and all
the Mexican
help.
They're all looking like I'd eat it.
And so I had to cut it.
And then they leave the fish that's on the skeleton that looks like the one Sylvester
found on
a garbage thing, to go to move.
It's moving, and like a dead bobblehead.
And you had to put water in its mouth to keep it alive so you could watch it
die as you ate.
It was a nice meal.
Jesus, I'm living such a pale life here.
I mean, you are out there on the cutting edge of cheese.
Remember the joke you did about the time that you found yourself on your couch
with Cheetos
and you're watching and you realized you weren't living, remember?
Norman, I've told thousands of jokes.
What was that?
It's the Ricky Martin Cheetos.
No, I'm whispering to you the punchline.
Well, what is the joke?
I was eating Cheetos watching Ricky Martin sing with Vito Loco.
No, no, no, don't say that.
No, you say, yeah, the other day I was sitting there on the couch and I was
eating Cheetos
watching America's Funniest Home Videos with Tom Bergeron.
And I realized I might not be leading La Vita Loco.
You remember that one?
Wow, I do.
I built my whole career around that for a couple years.
Are you a Dennis Miller cover comic now?
Well, Dennis was always kind to me.
He gave me my first job in show business.
Hey, worst moment in my marriage ever is akin to that joke.
I'm laying in bed one night with my wife.
She's reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I'm watching Dancing with the Stars.
And we're in bed, and I lean over to a guy.
I think Bruno Tomioli has a new scoring paddle tonight.
She says, if you ever talk like that again, I'm leaving the marriage.
Overnight, you won't even know I've left.
I've got to sleep with you, you moron.
How did you notice that they have a different scoring paddle tonight?
Do you remember Leno?
Jason's younger than us, so he probably thinks of Leno as terrible.
But Leno was the best, and probably still is the best.
Do you remember Drake and him?
Yeah, so he was probably the funniest, but he had a joke.
One of his jokes in his act, you remember this joke?
I'm sure you remember this joke.
But he'd say, I can't do Leno like everybody else, I guess.
I go, I'll try.
I've never done them.
I've never tried.
It'll be here.
It's exciting.
What will that come out like?
So he goes, he goes, he goes, oh, no, they got, eh.
He goes, he goes on, you know, when he'd go on Letterman, he'd be really funny.
And he'd go, eh, they got, now that I was reading that the number one reading
material
in all of America is a TV guide.
Is this considered reading material there, ladies and gentlemen?
TV guide.
Is there a guy down smoking his pipe, reading, you know, in his armchair, and
his wife's like,
he's like, I'll be right up, buddy.
I'm just finishing, who's on this week on Crosswits?
You remember that night I was at, we're talking to Jason Sudeikis, and Norm's
taking us down
memory lane, but Norm used to write for me at an old show I had for like six
months at
the Chicago Tribune, I got whacked, but Norm and Drake Sather, who was a genius,
Drake,
no longer with us, God rest his soul, but he was a genius, and a good cat, a
sweet, sweet
cat, but they used to tinfoil the windows, they'd sit in there, they would
never send jokes
out, I would stick my head in, there'd be two cigarette lights in there, like
fireflies
in the night, I'd go, you poison bastards have anything?
They'd slide jokes out later, but I remember one night I'm with Drake at the
improv, and
Jay was very avuncular then, he was like the paterfamilias for the comedic
community, and
we'd come in in a corncob hat, or a corncob pipe and a straw hat, and he would
lecture on
comedy up in the attic, and I remember that I'm sitting there with Drake one
night, Norm's
writing, and Jay goes off on his ten cardinal rules of comedy, and you never
save a joke
for the next shot, if you have 14 jokes and they want 13, you do the best 13,
you say,
you don't say, wait, yeah, exactly, get the check, tell joke, get the check, so
anyway,
he gets to the end of these ten rules, and all these comedians are sitting at
the hem of
his cloak looking up at him, like he's Aristotle, and Drake goes, hey, thanks,
Jay, but I have
a father.
What was he the best?
Tell me a little, Drake, man.
Drake and I had the same show, like, he gave us a job, Dennis, because we were
just doing
stand-up.
Oh, come on, can you imagine that?
You're lucky, Jason, you're lucky enough.
So my manager, I had a manager, I can't say his name, Bombastic Bushkin, and he,
so he
said, I said, hey, I heard that guy, Dennis Miller's doing a talk show, you
know, and I
could do some jokes for him, I've seen him talk on TV.
So maybe, like, I've heard, I would always have to tell him, like, what I'd
heard about
show business from watching the Dick Van Dyke show years ago, I go, he'll
probably need
writers, like Buddy Sorrell, so anyways, they look into it, and you have to
send in jokes,
like a big packet of jokes, so, like, it's about the news, you know, so I never
read the
newspaper, so I go to this Denny's, and I start reading the newspaper, trying
to think
up jokes, nothing, every story's real serious, you know, and I'm deep into it,
and getting
sleepy and stuff, you know, so anyways, I wrote, like, ten jokes, and then nine
of them really
sucked, you know, and there was one, like, all right, so I didn't know what to
do, so I
said, I phoned my manager, I said, maybe I should just write in this one, you
know, send
one, because if he looks at ten, you know, he's going to go, oh, he's at 90%,
he's horrible.
That one was pure, though, baby, that was uncut.
But anyway, so I sent it one, and then I got the joke, and then I think people
thought
I did it on purpose, but I didn't do it on purpose, it was just a...
Norman, you were a monster right out of the box, I saw, Sudeik, I saw Norman do
a joke
once, you remember the joke about the homeless guy's dog?
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Could be the greatest joke ever, but I feel sorry for the homeless guy, I
really feel sorry
for his dog, though, because you know the dog's thinking, this is the longest
walk.
Does this thing have a payoff, pal?
Because I could do this on my own.
I remember the first moment I saw that joke.
Oh, yeah, I could do this on my own.
Thanks for the leash.
Norman McDonald and Jason Sudeikis was...
Now, Jason has a film coming out, we're going to talk about it on the other
side of the
break, and Norman's got the sports show.
Jason is a guy I didn't pick from Saturday Night Live to become a major motion
fixer stuff.
Oh, he's a killer.
Why not?
Come on.
I'm happy for you.
I picked Dennis.
I thought he was going to be a big movie stuffer.
Oh, no, it's not a bad thing.
I didn't pick Sandler.
Yeah.
I didn't pick Sandler.
Well, you know what, Sandler, early on, though, I remember thinking...
Because he was in Mixed Nuts.
I don't think he's going to be the number one box office guy.
But you've got to admit, early on, there was something that made me quizzical
about him.
Women dug him.
You know, women liked him a lot.
But also in a room, he was hilarious.
Oh, I remember...
He was the funniest guy.
My first year at SNL, you came back, like, around Christmas time, and you came
walking
into the office...
Well, don't tell...
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
And you're just, like, looking around...
No, I'm not.
This isn't a story where you raped someone.
Isn't that a good thing for me to yell, don't tell?
This is more insulting to me than you'd think I would.
But you came walking in, and you're kind of, like, looking around, and it was
Forte's
office, and he was in there with Fred Armisen, and it was, like, their second
season, my first
year as a writer.
And you're just kind of looking around, like, hey, uh, hey, uh, so who's it
going to be,
huh?
And you're like, what are you talking about?
I go, who's going to be the big star?
Nobody here knows.
Could be any, could be none.
You just kind of, like, stirred it up, then you walked out.
Norman, a true original, and Sudeikis, the young pup.
We'll query him and Norman after the break.
This is the Dennis Miller Show.
I remember seeing these cats do this at SNL that night.
That's how long ago I was.
I was, I was in on rap before rap became wickie, wickie, wickie, wild, wild
west.
You remember the hard streets?
You know what you were good at, at Saturday Night Live, and Spade was good at?
You'd know who was good, you know, instantly, and then you'd be their friends,
and then you,
you know what I mean?
And I would, I would, especially with music.
What are you, Yoda?
No, I only knew old guys.
Like, I wouldn't know anybody that was in movies at the time, or, because
Saturday Night
was always breaking people, so the host would be someone that was just in a
movie, her first.
Yeah, I worked there, man, I know.
Yeah, you know, you know.
So, but you would probably know them, because you're an actor and stuff.
A little bit, yeah.
Yeah, some of them, yeah.
Me, I wouldn't know them.
So, so, Lauren would go, anyone want to see, anyone want to, you know, and so
then people
would go, what about Anna Faris?
And I'd go, oh yeah, I've heard her name.
And I'd be like, what about the, uh, Jim Jarmusch?
He'd be good.
And then I'd be, I wouldn't know, I wouldn't know who they were talking about.
And then I'd be like, Norm, and I'd go, uh, Bob Newhart.
Mary Tyler Moore, what?
They're dead.
You were in a barbershop.
You always ac
