Norm Macdonald & Sean O'Connor on Down With Joe DeRosa (2014) The future of comedy is now!

welcome to a very special episode of down with joe de rosa ladies and gentlemen
do i have a
christmas present for you and i'm only saying christmas because that's the way
i was raised
i don't mean to alienate jewish folks this could be one of the eight hanukkah
presents if you like
all right any other religion that i'm unfamiliar with and that i don't know any
of the customs of
maybe you don't give gifts in your religion but you're still celebrating right
now i don't know
the point is is it's a holiday gift for the holiday season who shows up on the
podcast today not one but
two great people the first of which is a dear dear friend of mine sean o'connor
very very dear friend
of mine i've known him for a very long time and he's a hilarious guy and i was
excited to finally
get him on the show where we were able to talk about stress and our mutual anxieties
that we share
uh who else is on the podcast well one norm mcdonald very exciting very
exciting he's not on the whole
thing he's only on part of it why is he only on part of it because we recorded
the podcast in his hotel
room sean and i did and norm was in the one part of the room and he would drift
in here and there
and eventually he jumped in and started to got on mic and started to talk and
became part of it
which we were both very thrilled about sean and i i mean i don't i mean i didn't
mean me and norm
oh boy i bet norm norm was thrilled to be a part of it um but sean and i were
excited man that he was
coming in and becoming a part of this whole thing um here's the bad news sound
quality sucks sound quality
on the whole episode uh sucks uh here's why usually you know when i have guests
they're here as i do this
intro uh if you haven't gathered yet so far today uh the guests aren't here
with me i don't know if
that was evident or not but they're not here with me i am alone i'm recording a
special intro and why
joe are you recording a special intro well because as i said the sound quality
on what you're about to
hear sucks and why does it suck because the whole thing was recorded through a
laptop microphone
and why was it recorded through a laptop microphone because we only had 35
minutes to get this done
because sean and norm had to leave to go to their show and i had to leave to go
to my show
why did we only have 35 minutes to get this done why didn't we allow ourselves
more time
because we uh needed to drive from a barbecue restaurant to their hotel
and it took us 90 minutes to get three miles why were we at a barbecue
restaurant because i'm in
atlanta which means i am on the road which means even this intro is being
recorded from the back of
the club i'm performing at right now why am i on the road because i need to
make money what else does
being on the road mean being on the road also means that i'm not working with
my standard equipment i'm
working with my travel equipment so when i plugged it in in the hotel room
because i was nervous
because we only had 35 minutes i was in the hotel room of a guy that i really
love and look up to
and i couldn't get the damn thing to work correctly i i panicked and i just
started recording and i
thought i had it all working correctly and i didn't have it working correctly
so all of our voices are
recorded through the goddamn fucking laptop mic and i thought all our voices
were going into the actual
mics and they weren't i wasn't thinking clearly i i failed you i know i failed
you okay fine and i know
what you're thinking joe you did fail us i know i did you don't have to say it
i'm aware i'm very aware
but as they say every dark cloud has a silver lining and the silver lining of
this dark cloud which is
a shitty recording quality is the fact that uh we have two wonderful guests and
i'm really
enjoyed this conversation sean and i talked about stress as you will hear and
then norm comes in
and he's fucking hilarious what more do you need to know sound quality is good
enough that you can enjoy
this just not good enough for you to respect me as a podcaster enjoy folks i
hope you like it
it's about 35 minute conversation take it all in and uh i'll talk to you
afterwards welcome to down
with joe de rosa one topic one guest one hour quick plugs mistakes were made
the b-sides double album
it's out now you can get it on itunes or amazon also i will be at the lizard
lounge at the chameleon
club in lancaster pa january 4th and then the following weekend i'll be at the
cap city comedy
club in austin texas uh today we are talking about stress if you've listened to
this podcast you know
that i have it terribly uh i'm on medicine for it i'm on prozac for it and i'm
in therapy for it i'm
trying to deal with it because it's a tough thing to deal with and my most
fascinating the thing i find
most fascinating about sex or about stress is that it prevents me from having
sex uh is the thing i
find fascinating about stress is the people that don't suffer from it have no
idea how it works
um so that's kind of what we're going to talk about today and my guest
fortunately does know how it
works he's been on conan he's had a half hour comedy central special he wrote
for the sports show
on comedy central with norm mcdonald uh he's doing all types of stuff the the
lucas brothers movie
company for fox sean o'connor awesome it's good to be here it's gonna be really
fun i think it'll be
fun i hope it'll be fun i mean we we had a great conversation uh in the three-hour
car ride it
definitely got back to the hotel so i feel like we're i'm dude how long was
that fucking car ride i got a
headache during the car ride yeah yeah it was it was it took us it took us 90
minutes to get from
matt fat matt's ribs it was 2.3 miles away we could have walked that we could
have just left the car
there and got him back it took 90 minutes yeah that's fucking crazy so here we
are we're both in
atlanta right now performing uh you're at the improv yeah and you're at star
bar yeah which i think is
better we're fine why don't you guys come do your show at star bar tonight yeah
we'll come we'll come
for the late show it'll be like have you ever been to punchline atlanta no they
on saturday night it's
a six o'clock show an eight o'clock show a 10 o'clock show and a midnight show
what that's your saturday
night at the punchline you do four shows why uh because they don't understand
it like they don't
understand comedy even though they've been a club for 40 years and they think
it's great and you bomb
so hard on a saturday at six o'clock that sounds terrible it's not fun so what
uh i mean what's the
point how could anybody unless you're like you know fucking chris rock get a
turnout for four shows like
that yeah it's one thursday three friday four saturday one sunday it's a very
long week jesus
i've never done that have you done it i've done it twice was it stressful they
canceled the saturday
at six o'clock show 12 both times but they're like we usually do it all the
time but it's been canceled
all times but it's stressful just stressful doing stand up three times a night
now you're out here
currently you're not headlining these shows oh no you're i'm doing it down you're
with no mcdonald
opening which is that's a very fun gig oh it's the best gig in the whole world
yeah that's awesome
now when you're not with norm because i've been in that position where you tour
with somebody else
yeah i've gone down the road a lot with burr and pat and oswalt and you know i'm
with chapelle for a
while so you go with people and it's nice because when you're first of all you
only have to do like 20 minutes
20 minutes it's the fucking best and you go on in between like the host and
then the person everyone
wants to see and it's right no one expects anything out of you and then you're
like fairly okay at it
yeah and then the hard part is though when so you're in this situation with
with a beloved comedian
uh their fans now are becoming your fans and and you're feeling that's sort of
the the residual love
yeah you know from from somebody else's fans but then you leave that person and
you go do your own
headlining show and then that's back to reality oh my god there's just nothing
worse than like
going from like the wilbur theater then to go to foxwood's casino and be like i'm
gonna do 45 minutes
in front of people who are are basically being paid to be here it's like they
got free tickets
oh it's the fucking worst and then everyone is like oh we loved you we think
you're fantastic and then
you have mine and then you don't even want to say you just want to say sorry to
people like i'm so
sorry yeah i'm sorry i ruined your night with my opinions
i i ruined a lot of nights with opinions yeah uh i made a man cry once at a
show oh my god well
that's awesome man how how did that happen uh he kept heckling me the whole
time and i was like you
know i kept being like shut up dude shut up and like and he kept doing it and
then i got really mad
and i wasn't right for doing this but i got really mad and i go and i just i
did the like get the
out of here you get the out of here you know and uh he stood up and then uh
when he was walking to the
doors i go get the out of here and the audience was booing him and i go hear
that that's because
you're an asshole oh they're booing you because you're an asshole and he was
fat and when they
got to the double doors i go open both doors so that that bucks can squeeze
through and then he
went to the bar and cried oh and started crying to the manager and said my wife
is dying in a hospital
i just wanted to have fun tonight oh that wasn't my fault no it wasn't he was
just having shitty fun
that's not the way to have fun what club was that carolyn's oh that's perfect
it was carolyn's yeah
i like that yeah that guy's in new york he's a piece of shit his wife's dying
in a hospital and
he's going to do see stand-up at carolyn's fuck that guy yeah i know it is kind
of like what are you
doing at the comedy club if your wife is you know is sick you might want to
spend these final moments
with her also how are you fat in new york like it's so hard to be found in new
york i was my fan
is to me i was my fantasy but at the same time you know when you're at your
fast you notice that not
everyone like no one else is bad in new york yeah i mean i was fat in new york
because
i would just uh you know you're always like on the run you know yeah you know
because you got to take
the subway everywhere and everything and it's always so crowded and like you
just be like i don't have
time to eat you just get like pizza pizza yeah because it's all cheap too like
you're only spending
like four dollars on a meal and it's just yeah two hamburgers yeah exactly you're
like well i spent six
grand on my rent this month so uh obviously i'll just need a dollar fries for
the room till january
yeah the uh yeah i was i was my i got thinner when i went to l.a because every
every in l.a it's the
worst everybody there is well you also have to make an effort because you're in
a car all the time
so like when you know that that's how you can just like you just start walking
more or like running or
exercising you have to now did that give you anxiety when you got there and you
felt like you were out of
shape and everybody else was oh i've had yeah my anxiety my anxiety started at
21 which i felt like
i had a really good run right i'm not having anxiety and then i when i moved to
new york that's when it
started full blast really that was like a nightmare really yeah i didn't listen
what give me give me your
worst uh your worst ailment when it comes to anxiety what's the worst part of
it for you it's just i am
certain i i think now i know more than most doctors in terms of like diet like
diagnosing stuff right
so i'm like obsessed with getting a disease me too uh i was certain i had
throat cancer the week before
i moved to new york i swear to god i thought this whole week i thought i've had
throat cancer the
whole week it's a terrifying one have you ever gone to the hospi
